Thank you for your comment, I was going to also mention he wrote this from his apartment in Montreux, Switzerland and not in a hospital. For some reason urban legends get passed around as fact and very few people try to set the record straight. Thanks again for helping to clarify facts. 👍😊
Thank you for this special reaction! No, they never broke up. At one point it became very routine that they would record an album, tour, record, tour, etc. and they got very sick of the routine. They wanted to change the way they did things so after their Hot Space tour, they did not go straight back to the studio as they normally would. Instead, they gave themselves some time to do other things and relax before they recorded again. It was not a "break-up". It was more of a hiatus so they could get out of that grueling routine. Freddie pretty much only went to the hospital for radiation treatment and surgeries and he did so early in the morning to avoid being seen. He did not die in the hospital or spend much time there. The people close to him were trained to give him his AIDS medication via IV into a port in his chest so he could have his treatment at home rather than in the hospital. I think he had to have the medication three times a day if I'm remembering correctly. Montreaux, Switzerland was where they did the majority of their final recordings because Freddie was stalked by the press in England, to the point where they were at his house 24/7 and even peering into his bathroom window trying to catch a glimpse of Freddie. It was horrible for Freddie which is why the band chose to record in their studio in Montreaux. Freddie could be more relaxed there. He did not have to worry about the press or fans hunting him in Montreaux. He had a flat that looked out over the lake. To honor him, they erected a bronze statue in 1996 of Freddie in Montreaux at the Lake Geneva lakeside striking his famous pose (hand in the air), shown in the video. It is inscribed "Freddy Mercury. Lover of Life - Singer of Songs". I think they also were required by England tax law to pay higher taxes unless they spent a good portion of the year outside England, which I'm sure contributed to their location choices. He recorded until he couldn't. Then, he went back to his house in England and essentially hid as best he could in his house. When he could no longer do what he loved, he stopped taking the meds that were keeping him alive. He died shortly after stopping the meds. If you are ever in Montreaux, you should check out the statue. Queen also turned their studio in Montreaux into a Queen museum, located inside Casino Barrière, that is open for touring. Queen never broke up, they took an extended break after the 1986 Magic Tour. Each member of Queen had side projects they worked on during this break where they worked on solo projects, produced music for other artists, and played on recordings for other artists.

We miss you Freddie. I hope you’re getting a chuckle at all of us stumbling around down here pretending we know what we’re doing.
