    Interesting, I had no idea about the logic behind split chassis. Thanks for the explanation Sam.

      Thanks Patrick - yeah it was a good idea, but sadly in the long run I'd say it was a failure!

    Shortly after I got back into the hobby I got a second-hand Bachmann 2-8-0 on Ebay. I was heartbroken when it arrived and had trouble moving, and later when some of the wheels just plain fell out!
    Eventually I learned this was a pretty common issue. Rather than glueing the axles back together (which would've been easier than usual, this was one with the square pegs), I found 3d-printed replacements for the axles for sale that worked pretty well. I still have a little work to do to get it running great, but at least it's running again.

    Some diesels like the Bachmann spectrum F40PH and the Dash-8 use the split chassis design. For the diesels, it is a very good design and weighs quite a lot. They use metal axles with insulators in the wheels like modern engines. They are difficult to install dcc in, because you have to isolate the chassis. Nice video!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 лет назад

      Is that so? I've never come across a split chassis diesel before - that's very interesting!!

    Peter's Spares sells replacement axle spacers for all the Mainline/Bachmann early models - so they can be repaired - axle failure isn't terminal with the availability of those.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 лет назад

      This is true! However, it won't correct the problem - even the replacement spacers will fail eventually, which is why I try to avoid these wherever possible!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    • @DrAl60103
      @DrAl60103 6 лет назад

      Interference fit, as used with these, is all about getting the correct tightness - if they are too tight then they risk splitting, which can be overcome with careful reaming of the holes. It's very common with N gauge models that I have - gearing splitting on axles. I've replaced literally hundreds of them, but by reaming out replacement gear holes so the interference fit is only light, the problem can be permanently overcome. The good thing with Peter's spares is that they are brand new production also, not old stock.

    I have 2 (US) Spectrum (top range Bachmann) locos that has the split chassis; one is a 2-8-0 consolidation witch has the same ring-filed motor like the mainline tank-engines, the other is a GP-40 Bo'Bo' diesel that has a the same motor that your GS-4 has just with double flywheels, and the bogie's pickups touching the two sides of the frame.

    • @SamsTrains

      Ooh awesome Tom - I am familiar with those, having serviced a couple!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

  • @TestECull
    @TestECull 6 лет назад

    It's also worth noting that the split axles are more a Bachmann problem than anything else. General rule of thumb for us N-scalers is 'If you buy Bmann from 1990 to 2004 or so expect it to die quick from axle failure'. Only locomotive they sold for US modellers not prone to this was their 4-4-0 American, and that was only because all the electrical bits live in the tender so they used brass axles with traction tires in the loco itself.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 лет назад

      Yeah absolutely - and on N scale the level of wear should be much less too, with them being smaller!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    • @TestECull

      Yeah. I have two Rivarossi locos from the 1960s that still run reasonably well(And one's even chipped!). These things just don't wear very much, with the exception of motors. One of my Rivarossi steamers does need a new motor, the front bushing wore out so bad that it screeches like a banshee going forward *and won't reverse at all*.

    I might considder getting Bachmanns newer DCC sound version of the GS4, although it is a pricy thing... and a machine like that obviously needs a suitable consist with matching Daylight coaches, which in itself is a pricy thing! Beautiful machine all round, I will say.

    Things are wildly different in HO/OO, it seems, because a split frame like that is the *only* way to make a N-scale loco that runs worth a damn.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  6 лет назад

      Ahh really? How do they get dcc fitted then? It must be a nightmare!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    • @TestECull
      @TestECull 6 лет назад

      It's pretty easy, actually. They just machine enough clearance around the motor terminals that the frame halves don't contact the motor, then run some of the tiniest wires you ever did see down to them from the decoder. Some diesels use brass contact strips from the decoder to the motor terminals, which are mounted on the cutouts that the motor can requires to not foul the frame anyway. Converting a non-DCC N loco to DCC on split-frame isn't that hard, either, you just get in there with your dremel and notch some pockets into the frame, desolder the contact strips the motor may have, and solder some tiny little wires to it. Not that difficult at all, really. A little kapton tape goes a long way as well, though really, the motor should never shift enough to short in there.
      The reason why split-frame is the go-to in N is alluded to by you in this very video: Pickup. You mentioned that this GS-4 had no electrical connections to the tender and got all of its pickup through the drivers thanks to the split frame. With N-gauge stuff, pickup is CRITICAL. You lot in HO/OO can run 4-coupled tenderless steamers all day long without too much fuss, can get away with loco picking one rail up/tender the other(Or one bogie and the other on diesels), and it works okay. In N that just does not work, Rivarossi tried it with some steamers in the 60s/70s and they always had pickup problems. With the models being so small and so light you need every last wheel you can get picking power up or it *will* stall on insulfrog points,. Even a 4-8-4 like this one, if it's relying solely on its drivers for pickup, will stall on points from time to time. The standard for N steam is split frame + needlepoint pickup on all tender wheels, at least for US modelling. Diesels have it a bit easier if they've got all wheel pickup as they'll almost guaranteeably have at least four wheels picking power up from one side of the point or the other, which is what N steamers gain from having full tender pickup.
      *Electrically speaking even 8-coupled steamers are only six coupled, because traction tires are almost mandatory on an N steam locomotive for it to pull anything...*

    HI, I am trying to resurrect the same split chassis GS 4 (in the American Freedom Train paint) on this video and i have most of it figured out....Dirt and stuff is all cleaned up and I was able to rewire the rear bogey and get it all connected, but for the life of me, I can't see where the front electrical pickup is located. I do see where it would be connected to the left side of the chassis and there were the remains of a short wire with two tiny brass connectors like the ones on the back...so i am assuming there some screw hole that I just don't see.....Help!

    Torn Apart
    One day, Sam spilt some super glue on his loft carpet. The sticky liquid desolved into the carpet. To make matters worse, an innocent little Peckett Tank Engine was on the receiving end of being knocked off the service table. Sam sighed although he couldn't stop giggling. He didn't see the engine land on the liquidy super glue, which in turn made part of the carpet horribly sticky. Uh-oh! Trouble reared its ugly head.
    Sam got up off his chair and found the model engine right way up on the sticky part of the carpet. He felt the stickiness with a cold finger. It didn't look very good. The engine's wheels had stuck tight to the gluey piece of carpet.
    "Oh fiddlesticks!" Sam tugged hard, trying to unsuccessfully prise the wheels away from the carpet. The model wouldn't budge. "If only I'd been more careful, this wouldn't have happened." Sam pulled and twisted the model in all directions. There was a noisy rip, and the body came off the chassis. Screws went flying, yet this was the least of Sam's problems. He tugged at the wheels several more times. Another rip later, a square piece of carpet came off stuck to the wheels. At last, Sam managed to tear the carpet from under the metal wheels. The wheels crumbled in his hands. He was not happy.
    A visit to a certain model shop later, Sam bought an exact replacement model. He was careful afterwards never to spill super glue on his loft carpet again. He didn't want to end up tearing any more engines apart. A wise move.

    I just picked up the GS4 with dcc and sound in the dream train scheme for about 142£. I can’t get it to go around a small oval without derailing. The front and back boggles dangle from the train and create a problem even on straight track. Is there any way to correct this problem?

    This model needs an update!! It has a new chassis, which first appeared either in 2009 or before, and The tooling is from 1976, has not been changed ever! It comes with a lackluster sound system, TTS is much better and cheaper. All this is $449, cheapest I have seen is $249, still makes no sense! Buy a Broadway limited GS4, expensive, but much better model

It has a metal body for loco and tender, direction lighting, smoke, and depending on the Dcc system the whistle will produce smoke as well . The smoke is synchronized with the wheels and sound. It is pretty much a dapol black label A4 on steroids
