Kenny is wrong. Kawhi doesn’t really guard the best player anymore. That’s because he’s shouldering the offense. Same could be said for a lot of star players.

Yeah Kawhi shouldn't have been in the all NBA defense team this year. It's just all narrative at this point that he plays great defense anymore. Wayoff P guards the other team's best players much more often.

@@dwyanelee2203 As much as Paul George choked the series, he is still an amazing defensive talent. Kawhi is still a great defender too, but not as good as he used to be. Paul George is a better defender at this point in their careers but Kawhi is more consistent offensive player.

The Lakers in the last 2 series were up 3-1
The Nuggets in the last 2 series was down 1-3

Kenny & Shaq don't want the players today to be greater than the players during their era, so they act like today's NBA is soft. Chuck himself admitted that he did not have to defend Karl Malone all the time. I'm sure Chuck won't admit that today's players are better either, but at least he was honest enough to not let his bias cloud his opinion this time.

I could totally understand chuck's point but i think he just wasn't able to articulate it in the moment.
Also it helps when you got kenny and shaq hammering down on you.
Lets not compare jokic to the greats but lets talk about the matchups in this series.
Jokic is always facing a fresh defensive center of the highest caliber (whether it be AD or Dwight and even Javale whose not on the same level but always brings the energy for the minutes he is on the floor)
Jokic has to play more minutes than any of the guys guarding him and AD is relatively fresher when Jokic has to defend him.
So he has to work way harder to get himself going on the offensive end and at the same time work hard to stop a much fresher AD.
And on top of this he has to stop all these guys from rebounding the basketball so chuck does have a point.
Whether he has to overcome this to become a "great" or a champion is a different question

    • @Istaygroovy
      @Istaygroovy 4 года назад +5

They're switching and hitting the post off the switch like the olden days which means jokic isnt in the mix and doesn't have to worry about being out rebounded by a shorter opponent and this happens a majority of possessions. There's not really much of a reason for his defender to matter as the support cast has shown their ability to knock down in and out 3s. You don't have to score the ball to still be aggressive and productive. You can watch all the greats when they were tired or injured, their role always changes to fit what's needed to secure the win. Jokic teammates have shown a high percentage in perimeter set shooting and they scored a few times from it but he kind of stopped it. I don't know if being tired is an excuse considering they kept letting teams get 3-1 leads but regardless there's more ways to be productive without carrying the scoring load.

...and only guarded Murray in short stretches. He hasn't been a lockdown defender since the Spurs. Doc has enabled Kawhi and PG to take it easy on the defensive end all season long. Even last year, Kawhi wasn't guarding the opponent's best player for entire games and taking on that assignment soley. Ever since his offensive game caught up to his defense, he hasn't been asked to put as much effort into the defensive end because he has to carry so much of the scoring load now. It also looks like that knee problem has slowed him down a little bit. Still a beast, I'm just pointing out Kenny's incorrect take.

In previous years I would agree with Chuck. But Murray has been great offensively these entire playoffs. He is averaging 25+ points a game and had 20 assists in the last two games... Saying that Joker has to carry the entire Nuggets offense is not accurate. I think Shaq is right in that his rhythm was likely affected by having to sit out due to foul trouble. It probably affected his overall aggressiveness and rebounding as well.

@CS Perry I really doubt it because Lebron has still been getting his usual regular season 35 minutes and mostly able to keep himself as a facilitator not even going more than 20 shots or holding the ball most of the time while Jamal Murray has been forced to consistently be playing nearly the entire game for the 3rd straight series. Especially looking at LA's last game against the Blazers, it looks like they can definitely take it to a higher gear in terms of effort. If Denver can also turn it up, then game 5 will be very fun to watch.

Meanwhile, kawhi does it for 3 years (Minus the scoring responsibility in 1), and the media hypes him up to be the best defender since Jordan! Meanwhile, klay Thompson has LITERALLY guarded the best player on the opposing team, held them to waay below their average, and IS STILL averaging more points then kawhi, AND has played in more games, even while missing a whole season with a torn ACL!
The Media LITERALLY can make people beleive ANYTHING!
