2009-2013 Mazda 6 common problems: The Mazda 6 is a pretty good car and doesn't have too many problems. The front subframe is known to rust on the right side, but Mazda issued a recall for this issue, read more below. If you are buying a used Mazda 6, have it inspected from underneath for rust. We recommend looking for a 4-cylinder model, as if the water pump fails in the V6 at higher mileage, the repair will be very expensive. Common problems in 4-cylinder models are mostly minor, such as a failing thermostat, headlight bulbs going bad often, warped front rotors causing steering wheel to shake when braking and electrical issues with the Push Button Start. Models with an old-school ignition key are less troublesome. Read more about the problems:
I just did a water pump job on this engine. Looked like a pain at first but found a video that made the repair pretty straight forward. You will have to make some room for access and in my case on a Ford Escape that involved removing the air intake and battery+tray A crank pulley removal tool nuts and washers and power steering remover/installer tool will get this job done. Clean the cam pulley bolt out with some lubricant and the screw that fits. Lastly, start the water pump belt and zip tie so it’ll hold in place, you can then bump the engine over until the belt seats and the zip ties will automatically cut. Again not a horrible job, but with a couple rental tools you won’t be stuck

I loved the looks, the integrated exhaust finishers, the LED headlights with level adjustment, and the neon orange gauge font with blue rings (the color contrast looked super cool at night). I also loved that you could lower the windows by holding down the unlock button on the key fob which certainly helped cool off the interior before getting into the car. The navigation screen was motorized and when you wanted to play a CD, it flipped down and forward which was a cool party trick. The only negative I remember was that the plastic trim around the gear shifter scratched VERY easily. I once lightly dragged the vacuum hose across it while vacuuming out the interior and it got super scratched up. It looked awful. Otherwise, it really was a terrific car! I was furious when Mazda dropped a V6 option for the next redesign. Come on, it’s called a 6! You’ve gotta offer a V6!

I have this car with 150k miles. This thing just will not die. It's had no major problems at all in my 7 years of owning it. Definitely going to keep this as a reliable second car when I get the itch to buy a new one.
I own the same 2009 Mazda 6 V6 (no nav though) with 270,000 miles. No problems either but a few things to be aware of: 1) Like mentioned in a comment below, the passenger dash crash-pad melts. Be aware that it may need to be replaced 2) Remember, these 3.7L motors have a fatal design flaw - the water pump is a life part, meaning it is not replaced. It sits in with the timing chain and requires the motor to be pulled to replace. If it fails, the water will drip straight into the oil pan and then the motor is toast. For this reason I change my coolant regularly (more frequently than recommended by Mazda) and only use the Mazda coolant as specified in the manual. I love my car and it has served me well and is very reliable. I will drive it as long as I can, but it should be mentioned about the 3.7 L design flaw.
@@tyronenur2373 I just did the water pump timing chain job on a 2009 with 120k miles. The problem is the gaskets start to leak. There are 2 gaskets for the water pump. I got it for shorts. So it wasn’t a big deal. But it is a job. Took me a few days. Working a few hours a day. The front engine cover is the hardest part trying to get it out. Not a lot of room. I did not have to pull the motor out. But I did use a engine hoist to raise the motor high enough to pull that cover out. Just finished it yesterday. Running beautiful now.
I got the base model 4 cylinder. Good gas milage as ez to work on. 10 minute tune ups, all plugs ez. Pcv is a bit difficult. Oil change ez, trans fluid drain abd fill ez. Great car if maintained well.
@@lexusfan100 mainly 1 hidden bolt on the center of the intake that requires swivel sockets and 1/4 extentions. Lots of things come off to get to pcv, buy intake gaskets before doingbthe job. Clean throttle body and intake with correct stuff, throttle body cleaner. If its burning or leaking oil pcv might be culprit. Valve cover leaks when gasket gets old, and if you do that do plugs too. Yea, pretty much keep good oil and coolant and everything else stays good.
How encouraging!! I have the exact the same Mazda 6. 2009, 138572 miles! I’ve replaced the battery numerous times due to a know door locking device issue? Anyone else heard or had this same issue? Additionally, replaced the water pump (that was pricey but still cheaper that a new or used car) but other than that she still runs smoothly and I love her!
I Own a 2011 Mazda CX-7 2.5L 300k miles on it and still runs like new and never had a single severe issue with it transmission is original and engine components under the hood is almost original the way it came from the factory other than few cosmetics.
On the Mazda/Ford 3.7L, the water pump is internal and driven by the timing chain. It can leak coolant into the crankcase, trashing the motor. Periodic oil tests with Blackstone Labs can indicate whether you're getting coolant in the oil - Hopefully before you incur major damage. Expect to pay at least $1,500 to replace the water pump. More if you sensibly replace the timing chain "while you're in there". The 2009 Mazda 6s also had a recall for structural corrosion on the front subframe. The recall service included coating the subframe with a thick wax-like substance and I think rerouting a drain line or two. Check condition before you buy.
It's such a shame that the 3.5 and 3.7 Duratech has an internal water pump. Aside from that water pump, they're excellently reliable engines that produce good power. That water pump is the only reason I won't buy a Taurus despite liking the car as a whole. Oh well, my Hybrid Fusion with the 2.0 is reliable as the day is long.
Great vid! I am (still) owning the European Hatchback version of this generation (with the 2.0L Mazda Engine). Drove it for 8.5 years and almost 200.000 km's now (ODO almost hits 275.000 km). It never let me down! Will pick-up my new Mazda 6 2014 model next week. Hopefully the Skyactiv will be as reliable as this generation!
Bought one after seeing this review with 220,000 it’s running like a champ even though the previous owner wasn’t doing well with maintaining it I’m doing repairs now but it runs great
I still have my 2009 Mazda 6 GTi. Approaching 100,000 miles and absolutely no issues. I bought this car as a 2 gen in August of 2008 as a 2009 model year. It’s 13 years old and looks awesome! It’s just like the body style of the one you reviewed. I have everything but nav. Camel leather interior seats, camel and black door cards. One of if not the first to have blind spot monitoring. I also have the same dimming tech for my side view mirrors that comes with the interior rear view mirror. So excellent! No blinding car lights. The car also features puddle lights under the side view mirrors. This car has so much to offer. The ten point Bose system is great! I know it’s not high mileage for its age but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been pushed. Honestly, the 4 cylinder engine is quite nimble and has good torque. No complaints about its power and getting 345 miles per tank. I love my vintage Mazda 6!
@Salt Maker I looked up my tank size and it's 18.5 gallons. You're getting way better mileage than I am. Do you think I need to get something checked out? With the way gas prices are I want my money's worth! Thank you!
@Salt Maker Thank you for your advice. I have thought about some of these things. I didn't know what to do. I appreciate your help and I will get on with doing these things. Thanks again!
I got 2011 2.0 petrol with all bells and whistles and 130000 km. No issues at all, it just works. Just normal maintenance (oil, brake pads, battery). Only thing I complain is that it is not silent car on road as wheel noises can be quite loud. But it just works, that’s what most important to me.
The 4 is even more reliable. They are using the old mazda 6 2.5l in the transit work vans doing great. Mazda tweeked the intake and throttle body so a bit more zoom than the 2.5 fusion. Still gets 25 city to 32 mpg highway after 140k miles.
I just bought this as my first car but it's red. I love everything about it so far, and all this info is really good to know. Super affordable and still feels really good for being made in 2009.
I love my 2009 Mazda6. The only thing I hate is the car alarm. It goes off for no reason. Took to the dealership, couldn't resolve the problem or deactivate the system. The dealership only created more problems and issues. Never taking the car back to them, but I digress. Mazda built a great car here and I am pleased with my purchase.
If ever having a problem with car not starting or rough idle after gassing up or at random times runs rough while idle, change the purge solenoid which is in behind battery. Big job to change this as you have to pull out alot of stuff under hood just to get to it. It will throw an engine code p1450 and p144a.
And if you ever have a flat, put air in it. And if it gets wet inside when it's raining, roll up the windows. If it continues to get wet inside when it's raining, close the sunroof.
I’ve had one for about 3 months now with 139,XXX Miles had absolutely no problems. For it to be 10 years old it doesn’t like like an old car inside or outside
I have a 2009 2l Mazda 6 in the U.K. Bought it at 70,000 miles, it’s now at 210,000 miles no problems what so ever. Everything is original just normal service on it. Good car which has given me good service all these years
I’ve got 140k trouble free miles on my 2010 4 cylinder, other than an ac repair it’s needed nothing. Interior still looks good and the car is solid as a rock. I’d hop in and drive it anywhere. I’m not going to lie I’m tired of driving it but for 12 years this car has been a rock. I don’t drive as much anymore so I may just keep trucking this thing for another 5 or 6 years and really get my moneys worth. I’ve always run royal purple in it since the first 3k oil change. It’s just a rock solid car.
I bought a used Grand Touring and had it for about a year. Beautiful car! Unfortunately at 215k miles the water pump in the engine gave out and the cost of getting that repaired was not worth it. Ended up using that money and then some to buy a 2021 Mazda3. I’m loving it, but I do miss my 6 :’)
I still drive my Euro spec 6 2.0 with 6 speed manual. I bought it new in 2009. and its been as reliable as a wood burning stowe, BUT the reason I am commenting is the dual climate "story" as you described me and my wife perfectly! I showed her that part of the clip and we laughed our asses off :)
Got this exact one with 270,000 km. Had no issues in the past 2 months except it overheating one time at the beginning but replacing the coolant seemed to fix it and have never experienced the issue again. Gas consumption is crazy on the v6 though 😨
So I've been watching your reviews pretty much exclusively for like a week & I'm convinced that you've pretty much reviewed every car to ever exist. Keep this up & soon you'll have to resort to reviewing Skyjacks or forklifts because you'll run out of cars 👷🏼
I have a 2009 6s GT 3.7L very similar to this, down to the interior color (the shiny black trim stuff). I am thinking of switching to a white interior, but I like the car. Better than the 320i I was driving before
I own a 2010 Mazda 6 with 160,000 miles. Best car by far I ever owned. Better and more reliable than Corollas I owned. I work on cars and I do admit, things tend to be more work in this car, for example, light bulbs, radiator, the front bumper, etc, but overall, I LOVE IT. It has been very, very reliable. The 2.5 engine has plenty of juice. V6's tend to have more problems and are costlier to repair. Plus more money on gas, much faster. But its an individual choice. Go with the I touring or I touring plus, they tend to have more on them, the sport is the cheapest one. Honestly, if you do not work on cars too much, consider the repairs are going to be costlier. For example, the radiator took me a day to replace, you literally have to dismantle the front end. Since mechanic charge by hour, its going to be a sky high bill. The Mazda 6 has lots of curb appeal and since they are not that popular people will look and even till this day I get many compliments. I bought it used at about 48,000 miles, I thought it might not make it to 100. To date, the only thing that needed replacing are some rear suspension stuff. The front items were replaced due to a person that ran into me, I will not count that as a break down. Please don't pay for replacing your headlight bulb for $600. The bulb costs $10. Seems scary, but its actually very easy.
I bought my 2009 Mazda 6 GT in 2013 with 73k. I drove it to 220k with no issues. Sold it and bougt a Buick Regal and 3 years after owning it had the timing chain changed. Lovey Regal but the Mazda 6 was great.

junk And yes, I own a Mazda six Nothing but trouble with this generation didnt last to 58,000 miles before I had to replace the motor.. All out of pocket replacing parts of the car are pretty easy to work with, but anything rubber on the car has failed. Even the clearcoat has failed.
It should be known that on the v6 version of this car there is one BIG fatal flaw... If the water pump ever fails its essentially an engine out job. The water pump is driven off the timing chain instead of an accessory belt so to replace it if it fails the timing chain has to come off which means timing cover comes off which with the lack of space in the engine bay means the engine; at best, is being tilted out the top, but more than likely getting dropped out the bottom along with the subframe. I will say the engineering of the 3.7's is good enough that the pump typically last as long as the engine, and in my 10 years at a Mazda dealership I only ever saw maybe 2 or 3 water pump failures on these engines but it is worth being aware of.
So the only differences I’ve noticed with mine is the nicer exhaust look on each side while mine has a dual exhaust on the one side without the V6 logo printed above it. Mine also the sedan leather seating interior instead of black. Would you say mine is still considered a grand touring trim or would it fall under a sports trim?
Can anyone help me? I'm having trouble finding the V6 as all of them are the 4 cylinder. What are the issues with the 4 cylinder that I should avoid and get the six cylinder over?
Purchased a 2008 MAZDA 6, 4 cyl automatic four years ago. At 97k the auto trans went south!! Two months ago the cat converters want bad!! One week ago my temp sensor went bad!! This is becoming a money pit!!! We're trading this in for a Toyota!!
Like the review except I don't agree with your taste in body styling. I think the exterior is still very attractive even in 2020 & way better looking than the generation prior to it. I do agree with the interior being dated but that's truly a default part of having an older car.

I know someone with the v8 explorer and its got over 300k miles. But he knows how to maintain very well so that is the main problem with most cars, bad maintenance, gas and go.
I have a 1.8L... 120K miles on it.. So far so good bar the the odd brake caliper sticking. The petrols are reliable.... But the same can't be said for the 2.0 and 2.2 diesels unfortunately....
I have one but with the petrol 2.5L engine. There have been so many issues with it and it’s only got 185k kms on it. The suspension is the main issue. I have changed upper and lower control arms at the front, shocks ( understandable I guess) the front sway bar bushes, all engine mounts and now the electric steering rack needs replacing as the torque sensor has failed. The rear hatch opens on its own accord, the drivers window regulator has also failed. The dash is also breaking down and has become all sticky. The drivetrain is good and the car is very handsome but the underpinnings are terrible. I can’t wait to sell it
95% of eveeything you kist described relates to rubber and plastic pieces exposed to constant use, constant temperature changes & extremes, and constant wear. And most issues people immediately chalk up to electrical issues are simply dirty contacts or switches that can be corrected with a squirt of--- hold on, wait for it--- electrical contact cleaner. You could own a Rolls Royce of the same year & mileage & time on the road exposes to elements. It, too, will have worn out rubber & plastic & poly parts. You could own

Do I have a 2010 Mazda 6 2.5 l and it has 250 thousand miles on it still running... at 209,000 miles... I had part I replaced was the tension pulley and I allowed the dealership to do a recall on the cross member, which was Rust issues with the cross member but they only did one side... the funny part about it last time I checked across members one whole piece and there's rust issues that does not make sense ...rust travel...lol and I'm still arguing with Mazda about their whole cross member unit and the fact is causing problems on my passenger side front wheel because the traction control light is on and the whole suspension has been completely redone.. the issue is coming from the cross member because its throwing something off causing the ABS light on the passanger front wheel... come on Mazda... in other words... FYI do not take your car to the dealership for a cross member replacement Also on that note I figure out the problem with the turbo lag and the 5 Stroke motor alone with issue that's going on with rotary motor and Mazda have not still reached out to me I'm about to sell this to another Corporation

I own the same 2009 Mazda 6 V6 (no nav though) with 270,000 miles. No problems either but a few things to be aware of:
1) Like mentioned in a comment below, the passenger dash crash-pad melts. Be aware that it may need to be replaced
2) Remember, these 3.7L motors have a fatal design flaw - the water pump is a life part, meaning it is not replaced.
Have you ever had that water pump replaced yet or is it still original?
@@mikeschiavoni5973 how difficult is pcv
It’s the same motor just an extra gear in the trans for better hwy mileage.
Bought one after seeing this review with 220,000 it’s running like a champ even though the previous owner wasn’t doing well with maintaining it I’m doing repairs now but it runs great
You better hope the timing chain and water pump has been replaced.
@@ProjectMore69 I doubt it bro but im doing that next that’s the last repair
@Salt Maker That's awesome! Thank you!
i have the same car with over 330000km. and still running strong.
btw love the 3 positions memory seat.
Wife and I just got a 2013 Mazda 6 with the 2.5 Inline 4. It has 133,000 miles on it and seems to be in good condition. Hoping it lasts a long time.
Your review is on point! I have no problems with mine at 120k miles… I have a V6 and definitely a reliable vehicle!
I love mine too, 2012.mazda6 ,2.5l and give me lots a fun 320000km,and still running new.Great car!😊❤👍👏
How much did you pay for it?
The 4 is even more reliable. They are using the old mazda 6 2.5l in the transit work vans doing great. Mazda tweeked the intake and throttle body so a bit more zoom than the 2.5 fusion. Still gets 25 city to 32 mpg highway after 140k miles.
I recently bought a 2012 manual, diesel wagon. It runs like a new car and I've been averaging 45mpg!
I just bought this as my first car but it's red. I love everything about it so far, and all this info is really good to know. Super affordable and still feels really good for being made in 2009.
Thats nice 👍
I just bought a red diesel manual wagon as my first car and love it too. Super torquey, handles great, comfortable and I've been averaging 45mpg
Unplug the hood latch sensor
If ever having a problem with car not starting or rough idle after gassing up or at random times runs rough while idle, change the purge solenoid which is in behind battery. Big job to change this as you have to pull out alot of stuff under hood just to get to it. It will throw an engine code p1450 and p144a.
And if you ever have a flat, put air in it.
And if it gets wet inside when it's raining, roll up the windows.
If it continues to get wet inside when it's raining, close the sunroof.

I got exactly the same 2009 with 190k mile. No problem at all, engine powerful like first day.
Does it still go fine ?
Would u recommend buying one of these in 2021 ?
I’m loving it, but I do miss my 6 :’)
was there any other problems/ repairs aside from the water pump since owning the car ??
Yee, he forgot to mention the cancer that model has with that water pump.
Gas consumption is crazy on the v6 though 😨
it actually was built along with the mustang, i believe....
Is the 4 cylinder as reliable?
So I've been watching your reviews pretty much exclusively for like a week & I'm convinced that you've pretty much reviewed every car to ever exist. Keep this up & soon you'll have to resort to reviewing Skyjacks or forklifts because you'll run out of cars 👷🏼
Depends on the aftermarket radio, you can change the clock. Mine allows me too. It’s an android specifically made for the Mazda 6z.

I bought my 2011 mazda 6 it had 270.000 now it got 280.000 with no problems (its my first car and i lovee it)
I have a 2009 6s GT 3.7L very similar to this, down to the interior color (the shiny black trim stuff).
How's it so far?
Great review ♥️♥️♥️,
Even I'm planning to buy a Mazda used car even before watching your review,,, thanks a lot..... love from Oman 👊👊👊
my 2009 mazda 6 2.4l 220,000km has had ZERO issues, just the headlight bulb burns out every 5months..pain to change but got the hang of it now lol
I had this same problem with a Mazda Protege 5. Every 5-6 mos the bulbs would blow. Other than that super reliable car.
Mine burned out every 5 year
I know right, I always have a replacement in glove box.and always use gloves not to get oils on it..
We had the same issue, make sure the plug terminals fit tight on the back of the bulb, that solved it for us.

I bought my 2009 Mazda 6 GT in 2013 with 73k. I drove it to 220k with no issues. Sold it and bougt a Buick Regal and 3 years after owning it had the timing chain changed. Lovey Regal but the Mazda 6 was great.

I just got a 2012 v6 Mazda 6 that has only 85,000
Is it just the V6 ones that have the water pump problem?
Yes I have a v4 and never had a water pump issue currently at 165k miles I'm the original owner
'feeling fast doesn't give you a ticket' :D

junk And yes, I own a Mazda six Nothing but trouble with this generation didnt last to 58,000 miles before I had to replace the motor..
I own this car and proudly 😁, best car for daily and inside town, but not comfortable for long highway drive,, thanks mazda for this trophy 💘🌹
Damn I wish my 09 Mazda 6 still looked like this 😂
Boosting a car isn't unreliable if you use quality parts. Nice vid(the 4 cylinder is better imo)

How’s the fuel mileage?
Like the review except I don't agree with your taste in body styling. I think the exterior is still very attractive even in 2020 & way better looking than the generation prior to it. I do agree with the interior being dated but that's truly a default part of having an older car.

Whats maintenance schedule like? Oil, gearbox, coolant, brake fluid, grease, powersteering fluid, fuel filter intervals?
Biggest one being the water pump and timing chain, ive asked but never got an answer.
I’m not sure “Ford Explorer parts” is a great way to call something reliable...
But the same can't be said for the 2.0 and 2.2 diesels unfortunately....
what infotainment system is that? someone please answer
Bose happy with mine sounds great
I have one but with the petrol 2.5L engine.

FYI do not take your car to the dealership for a cross member replacement
Also on that note I figure out the problem with the turbo lag and the 5 Stroke motor alone with issue that's going on with rotary motor and Mazda have not still reached out to me I'm about to sell this to another Corporation

2)paint as thin as ricepaper...andanything larger than a bug will chip.
3)electronics a nightmare. failed seatbelt light. failed dash lights-going off after certain car washings
4)rubber around c pillar blacked out area decided to turn to dust and join the here-after.
5)transmission is really lagging going from 1 to 2nd gear.
livable, but irritating in stop n go daily.
6)wind and tire noise. ya, i guess i could hear my wife IF I really TRIED, but it is not effort-free.
