What you see in the Old Town of Rethymno was built by the Venetians during their occupancy of Crete many years ago. These nighborhoods were then altered by the Ottomans during their four hundred year tyrannical rule of the Island. Back in the mid sixties I remember these Old Town buildings as being left unkept and dilapidated with semi paved dirt roads. Even today the Historical commission of Rethymno creates all types of red tape for owners of some of these structures nearly impossible to restore or make safe some of the older vacant buildings.
At the 23:17 minute mark on Souliou street, Stella’s Kitchen has some of the best home cooked food in the area!
At the 26:23 minute mark you find all of the seafood restaurants around the east and south sides of the old historical harbor.
A word of warning, these seasonal restaurants around the harbor area and many of the arbor covered restaurants within the old town must display menus with the prices clearly marked. They must also provide you with a menu with prices clearly marked. If they fail to bring a menu to your table, ASK FOR IT! If they fail to comply get up and leave. ALL BUSINESSES are required to provide every one with a receipt of what you pay for and buy. It’s the law.
