I know it’s not the exact same but I would think they look at the MV7 as the USB version of the SM7B. I’m glad they finally added them together. Still out of budget for me but I’m glad to see it for when I can afford one one day.
I always love gears that are way out of my budget. I don't have to worry about whether to buy it or not no matter how good it is. Also, I don't suffer from wishing I bought this instead of my RODE-USB mic.
The SM7dB in Germany is exactly 200 euros more than the SM7B at the moment (which is on a slight sale). Would you say it's worth getting the dB, even it it costed about 40~ euros less to just grab the old model with a Cloudlifter?
depends on what matters to you. if the simplicity/desk space saved due to not needing a cloudlifter and having easier switches on the rear is appealing to you, then this mic was made with people like you in mind. if i was in your situation, id probably go for the sm7b+cloudlifter just because i prefer the lack of branding on the sm7b while saving a bit of cash, but that's just me. at the end of the day, they're both great mics and im sure you'll be happy with whatever you decide.
Just get the normal 7B. What preamp or interface will be using it with? Most preamps will reach their peak signal to noise ratio at +45 dB and USB interfaces typically have much lower clipping thresholds (limited to 5 volts of power or no more than +15dBu) than outboard pres so you actually need as much gain to bring a signal to alignment levels. Digital make up will sort out the rest.
How would you go about that? Unlike a normal mic with the port on the back and the cable jutting out all awkwardly where people hit it literally *all the time*, this gets completely out of the way and you’d have to intentionally try to yank at it to ever strain. It’s one of those things people get weird about thinking it’s a vulnerability when it actually gives the mic more durability than most
@@EposVox I guess I don't see why the XLR cable still can't be on the top but have that wire have a hard channel directly down into the microphone, instead of having this loose flappy wire on the outside
can you explain the phantom power thing? I'm wondering if this might have caused my SD1 to sound tinny all of a sudden. Cloudlifter didnt specify in the manual about unplugging/plugging. Can you go through the steps and could this actually cause a malfunction in the microphone?
If phantom power is active when plugging in or unplugging XLR cables, you can fry whatever is on the other end of them. Steps were in the video - either turn off your interface/mixer or disengage phantom power and let it turn off for a minute before plugging cables
It’s secure enough and in a specific enough spot you’d have to REALLY be trying to mess it up or doing something really dumb to break it. But regardless, the mic is super repairable and Shure sells parts. Easy win. I’ve never heard of anyone breaking theirs tho. There’s like no scenario in which you’d strain it
I'm from Mexico, and I wouldn't be surprised if Shure is starting to produce certain models in my country. Nearshoring is making many brands to start operation in MX.
@@roverdrammen3977Shure already is. My question was more so to triangulate whether the SM7DB is being built on the same stock components being used in factories producing the SM7B today. That is largely in MX as far as I know.
This is cool however the mic looks so off, i will probably still pick up the original as it is now cheaper and I also have a good mic preamp if i need one
@@EposVox Yeah, big agree with the original comment. That gloss black Shure logo on the sides resembles the MV7 much more than the 7B. You can't beat the clean matte black, and that odd green color they're using for the branding now is certainly uglier than the black/white packaging and branding of old. It's a fantastic upgrade for people that want an all-in-one mic and don't want to deal with an inline preamp, but I think the external redesign is a miss. Could've done with just the upgraded switch panel in the back and SM7dB text on the label.
The audio is so good in this! (Every time an ad rolled, I compared it, pretty sure all of them had worse audio than the video.) (Also, the visual is super crisp, too, makes me wonder if 4:3 content gets extra bits as if it were a widescreen video of the same vertical resolution?? But I'm sure the upload quality was through the roof before RUclips re-encoded it... Hmmmmm.) Anyhow, back on topic, thanks for the update, would never have guessed there would be an SM7B sequel!

@@EposVox I guess I don't see why the XLR cable still can't be on the top but have that wire have a hard channel directly down into the microphone, instead of having this loose flappy wire on the outside
That would look far worse and this is a more repairable solution. The mic is very repairable with easy disassembly and all the parts sold by Shure
can you explain the phantom power thing? I'm wondering if this might have caused my SD1 to sound tinny all of a sudden. Cloudlifter didnt specify in the manual about unplugging/plugging. Can you go through the steps and could this actually cause a malfunction in the microphone?
If phantom power is active when plugging in or unplugging XLR cables, you can fry whatever is on the other end of them. Steps were in the video - either turn off your interface/mixer or disengage phantom power and let it turn off for a minute before plugging cables
Hahahah okay on the update but the old style commercials is highlight for sure!!! Lol. Nice review and nice video. Like it.
Thank you
The Electro-Voice RE20 sounds way better and doesn´t have any gain issues.
It can be tough to gain too
Where did you hear that Shure partnered with Cloud for the preamp? I haven't heard that anywhere else.
My Shure contact who said that was the appropriate language to use lol
@@EposVox that's interesting.
That was awesome!
That cable gives me anxiety. Shure will break at some point.
It’s secure enough and in a specific enough spot you’d have to REALLY be trying to mess it up or doing something really dumb to break it. But regardless, the mic is super repairable and Shure sells parts. Easy win. I’ve never heard of anyone breaking theirs tho. There’s like no scenario in which you’d strain it
Is Shure producing these out of Mexico or elsewhere? My recent SM7B came from MX.
Curious if the build has gone to the same locations making the MV7.
Uh what
You’re going to buy the SM7b, but think the new one - which is physically identical - “looks so off”? Lol?
I guess lol
@@EposVox Yeah, big agree with the original comment. That gloss black Shure logo on the sides resembles the MV7 much more than the 7B. You can't beat the clean matte black, and that odd green color they're using for the branding now is certainly uglier than the black/white packaging and branding of old. It's a fantastic upgrade for people that want an all-in-one mic and don't want to deal with an inline preamp, but I think the external redesign is a miss. Could've done with just the upgraded switch panel in the back and SM7dB text on the label.
rip fethead & cloudlifter sales
This is licensed from Cloud, so they're stoked!
A tip: should be able to take that logo off easy, looks pad printed on there.
The arm looks like a beefier version of my Blue arm.
A tip?

@@EposVox my bad then
The audio is so good in this! (Every time an ad rolled, I compared it, pretty sure all of them had worse audio than the video.)
(Also, the visual is super crisp, too, makes me wonder if 4:3 content gets extra bits as if it were a widescreen video of the same vertical resolution?? But I'm sure the upload quality was through the roof before RUclips re-encoded it... Hmmmmm.)
Anyhow, back on topic, thanks for the update, would never have guessed there would be an SM7B sequel!
That’s funny I just turned 65 and I’m in a wheelchair
Not really a fan of how the sm7b sounds personally and am sick of everyone using it.
