The poor were used to break the land for farming, build ports and towns so the wealthy could follow and step ashore in relative comfort. Horrors were committed to the indigenous people, a good book to read is "Blood on the Wattle ".
It describes convict settlement and a chronological list of massacres perpetrated. Very difficult to read. As soon as Aboriginal people were recognized as protected by British law, the massacres stopped getting reported. Shameful part of British history. Australia was recognized as a nation in 1901. The last massacre was recorded in 1926.
