Darren Berrecloth almost single-handedly changed the direction of freeride mountain biking when he showed up at Red Bull Rampage in 2002. The Claw's ability to fuse BMX style tricks into big mountain lines showed the rest of us what was possible, and gave us all insight into the future of freeride mountain biking.
But, it hasn't always been big drops and shredding gnarly trails. The rigged frame and lack of suspension in the early mountain bikes made it difficult do much more than go straight. Over the years, the evolution of the modern mountain bike has opened the doors to a vast landscape of new terrain, and the progression of the sport has been unstoppable since.
To celebrate the evolution of the cycle, Darren Berrecloth shreds some of BC's finest and explains why he fell in love with going really fast down a mountain on two wheels.

@@looney6ohh804 r/no one asked
Best MTB video iv watched it a long time
+Erupt Crafted me too, the cut camera position, location, and skills from the rider are so sick!
+Luca Alex agreed
+Luca Alex and it's a good song too . No dubstep for a Change like in every downhill video I can think of
the song is terrible!@@maxtopgear1
Rode a hard tail Giant Rainier for 10yrs now on a Trance 27.5 .Love it, the thing feels like a beast
Great Video, Great Soundtrack, Great Message! Makes me want to go get an All-Mountain Specialized now.
Excellent riding,and great video footage....!!!
Cheers
Beautiful video, I still remember my first MTB, was a 1985 Specialized Stumpjumper, then sometime later Girvin made the Flex Stem and we were all like "wooaaaaa front suspension !"
Red Bull, I love you! love your support for the less popular sports in the world I think is fair to say right and showing the world how awesome they really are, mountain biking being my personal favourite and you do so much for the sport! its awesome I love your content! Lol hope I don't sound to fan boy
great introduction, good camera man, amazing trail and the MTB rider is great.
We don't have those kind of real MTB trails over here, only jungle forests.
Those new bikes are great, had my first Cannondale 31 years ago, now I am on an Easy going beginners bike again (Giant Trance-2. 2015). Great bike for old-timers like me.
I 100% agree about All Mountain, mountain bikes! They are sick
Poorly named video. I was expecting a proper history lesson rather than an advert.
generalxue same
Same as someone looking into mtb and what bike I liked to get was really excited enjoyed the video but needs better title.
The only limitations that these bikes have... are your wallet
+D ibberd Yeah that Spez. comes in at a hefty price, but there are certainly budget AM bikes you can tear 90% of trails up with. That bike was more DH style then balanced, coil shock, long stays, long travel. He doesn't let double black diamond slow him down though.
Truth
hey, could you name some good bikes for low prices?
giant reigns and trances
Canyon.com breddren!
Very nice.. makes me wanto go for a ride. Love my Giant Reign.
I live on a decent mountain in virginia and with owning 10 acres of it, I've made my own bike trails and its great :D
ThatOne WeirdGuy you're lucky!
nice video. inspiring!
Awesome video! One of the best videos ever seen by me. Incredible ridding skills! Shows the very cable and confidant ridder who is at the peak of his performance. The
Sombrio outfit has nice premium finish and color combinations are gorgeous. Such a cool sport! Athletic, technical, fashionable and available year around. I want to know what kind of wheels are those with blue rims! Many LIKES!
so nice vid!
Im on a 2015 Trek Remedy and love it !
Great video.
muy buen video enhorabuena!
very well video. congratulations!
The beauty of Mountain Biking!
More of this video please!
The first mountain bikes were modified paper route bikes or beach cruisers from Schwinn in the mid-late 1970's and 1980's started in Northern California. When alloy rims were still fairly new, large alloys were made and put on these bike along with tube forks, alloy goose neck, hand brakes, and BMX tires. Some Kids may have custom painted their bikes and changed the handle bars and added lights. Shortly afterward bike manufacture started creating a angular large bike frames and adding all the accessories the kids did along with gears. These became the first mountain bikes mass produced. The BMX bike also evolved similarly but earlier on in the 1970's kids removed the banana seat, added a ten speed seat, removed all fenders and reflectors, chain guard, added knobby tires to their bikes these were the first BMX bikes, eventually new aftermarket handlebars and hand grips were made to look like dirt motorcycle type bars and grips along with other accessories and parts. Oakley bike grips (yes that Oakley) were the rage early on. Schwinn, Redline Mongoose, Huffy, Royce Union, Murry and others made the first original mass produced versions of BMX in varying quality.
It really reminds me of "Life Cycles" i bet it was the same filming crew. Great vid!
Verry nice film :D
The SX Trail is a perfect bike. Thank you Specialized!
i freaking love this!!!
It'd be interesting to see the history of offroad bikes. In 1982 I had an already years old bike (don't know how old, but in 82 I abused the heck out of it high up in the Sierra Mountains). It had a soft rectangle seat that was about like a 10" 2x4, similar to a motorcycle seat, and it was supported in the rear by two significant and effective spring shocks, and the front had an interesting and very effective spring shock that only had the drawback of being overloaded and locking into a "down" position, so I'd have to pop it back up to give it its 4" or so of travel. It was stiff enough I never had trouble with steering, but it could take a heck of a hit and not pass that up to the handlebars. It also had wide tires on it, was single speed, and had only the standard (pedal) rear brake. By far though that was my favorite and most comfortable bike for offroad, much better than the expensive Specialized bike I bought as an adult. I wish I still owned it.
sick trails
That's insane ! pretty awsome
Sheesh, that trail is nuts.
a lot of that looked like typical of North Shore trails in Vancouver (Fromme mtn)
it's little mountain in errington :)
actually it was built by darren and his friends. look for "beasts of bc - origins of freeride" clip here on youtube
cool clip!
I raced DH for the first time in 1995, and full time state and nationals until 2005. I now ride trail every week and have had heaps of DH and XC bikes . The changes in mtb tech and riding style has developed so much in this time. I cant wait to see what else the future holds as stuff just keeps on getting better all the time. Cheers.
super video
Thanks! Great feelings...
That looks like it could pretty fun!
that had nothing to do with the evolution of any bikes, felt more like an advert
So cool
Супер красивое видео, спасибо!
Great music
best stunts ive ever seen
Awesome
i am mountaining too your bike is really good
still love my stumpy. awesome video
Dude those bikes are sick. great low price full suspension bike. I'm stuck here with the rockhopper comp but it doesn't much matter since I mostly just do xc riding. I wanna upgrade tho to a stump jumper
Such a difference with just the speed you can do things. I had a kona cinder cone hardtail before so hope you can make transition soon!
Modern freeride reminds me of what we kids used to do with our bmx back in the 80s.
Epic manual at the end
Wish I trails like this near me
What a beast.
Really good vid! Whats the name of the song?
where is this track and what is it called? great video :)
wish that I had such luxurious wooded areas to ride. if you crash, you hit a nice "soft" tree. in southern Arizona, if I crash, it's any combo of cactus, or a knarly thorny mesquite tree.
luckily for me, I'm nowhere near this good and will never ride that fast. power to you.
wasnt really evolution of the mtb just claw talking about all mountain bikes and freeriding on one. sorry to call u out red bull.
+Daniel Kopaee lol yeah i was like wtf epic thread derail into whatever the fuck was this about again
I love how this video shows how much an all mtn bike can do...you don't need a dj or a dh bike for that kind of stuff!
And of course I’m the only one that lives five minute from this trail and actually met Darren on them today
professional
nice
@ #RedBull What is the model of the Specialized bike Darren is riding in this video?
is it me but after saying he only needs one bike he is riding two different bikes in that video. watch carefully and sometimes the Fork has RED fox racing decals and sometimes WHITE ones throughout the video....
they are different bikes but both are all mountain bikes and specialized enduros. one has an air rear shock and the other has a spring rear shock
could someone please tell me what bike this is.. thank you in advance...awesome video
specialized enduro
The Claw is possibly the only person who has ever hucked a 3 on clipless pedals
So really 30 sec of evolution of the mountain bike, then the rest of a dude riding.
Haha i got the specialized sx trail 3 old but stil gold
I'm still riding a late 1990's Gary Fisher Kaitai. :)
+Eric Cartman you win
+Eric Cartman lol
where are these routes?
I want that garage. Come on, Santa!
Man do I ever miss Drop In
wish I knew half or what he was talking or SHOWING!
Man I miss the good ole days when the claw was on a Specialized
anyone know what kind of bike that was?
do you have to lock your feet into the pedals?
Claw is the law!

+imtypingwords 41 www.bikemag.com/blog/specialized-sx-trail-1-bike-test/
thanks, i thought he said s6. all that was coming up was just the cell phone
Who is this bike park ?!
wooooooooooaaaaaaa
What exact bike is he riding?
Daren on Specialized is the real Daren. On Canyon he is just a marketing product
People bitching about this video are silly. He talks briefly about the history of mountain bike design from his experience/perspective and what kind of model designs brought him back to the sport. The video of him riding his Enduro IS history. Look at the different styles of riding in this video -- if you remember some of the old NWD or Kranked films, you'd see that he's stuffing all the different disciplines and styles of riding into one clip on one bike.
MTB
could anybody tell me what the soundtrack name is?!!!
Thiskidsnotalright by AWOLNATION.
+666fait thanks for your help man, you rock!!!
anyone else notice he changed bikes like 3 times? Between trail and big jumps.
Irgendwann werd ich auch son Bike haben !!!
+hans walter 8k brauchste da sicherlich für
+Dewoy1 hmm
Hab auch das enduro evo( also sein Rad) nur mich nicht ganz so guten Parts für 1600 gebraucht gekauft. Uphill ok und downhill göttlich
+Dewoy1 gutes AM neu: 3000, gebraucht: 1200-1500
Love u
beginning.
How do these guys jump so high with their bikes without falling? I would like to start mountain biking with my dog.
The bikes have come a long way but the price tag has gone even further. I'm stuck on my 1999 fsr stumpjumper because I can not justify $4000 for a bike without a motor. $4k is entry level before upgrades at that. I may upgrade to a newer bike soon but it will not be a new one.
I'm just looking at this video counting all the places where I might bust my butt
is that a camber or a stumpjumper?
Woe
limits are real until proven wrong
backpack?? model
Why do you have so many bikes I would love a mtb but all I got is a fithteen year old claud butler 😭😭😭😢😢😎😥😥red bull please hold a competition !
what bike is this?
Specialized enduro
