- Tales From My 30's: A Decade on RUclips and Beyond. I finally turned 40 on May 20th and celebrated in a big way. Not only were my 30's a wild ride but they were documented here on my RUclips channel. I'm sharing my stories and insights I've learned and what I look forward to next!

I'm so glad you went into the fact that even though Prince had EVERYTHING, there was an unhappiness and unfulfilling feeling he was dealing with. I mean, he had everything but a true family of his own. Two divorces, his son died a few days after he was born along with miscarriages from women he was dating here and there. He has everything but the family he always wanted. He had his band but they were on his payroll so....can't get much true family out of that. On top of all that, the pressures of being a star beginning in his late teens....He gave so much of his talent to the world, yet he left with nothing but himself alone. RIP Prince.
I met maya when I first moved to LA. I interviewed with her for a graphic design position and remember just feeling like it was such a full circle moment. I had her merch in high school and she was the only "influencer" i was inspired by. And there I was, post grad trying to work for her. It ended up not working out, she needed someone with a car and a passport and honestly I was such a newbie at being a designer its probably good that it didn't work out. Fast forward 3 years, I'm an art director, designer, and illustrator, I've worked with people i never would've dreamed of, I got my own apartment (the first place Ive ever furnished on my own which is huge for me), i have a passport, a car loan LOL. She doesnt even live in LA and now has a family! So much has changed and yet I still feel like so much is in store. I say all that to say, now as a grown woman I'm thankful for this video because its a soothing reminder from a familiar face and importantly from a woman older than me, that life can be abundant in MANY different ways. Life can change 180, but if you are in tune with what you want and never stop moving new blessings, new chapters, new desires can take shape. It's all about evolving. I hope i have the adaptability and resilience Maya has in my reserves because God willing, there's MUCH more to go. Sooo happy for you Maya. We've both come a long way.

I really appreciate this video! I'm in my early 30s and I keep thinking that, when I was a kid, adulthood was presented as "settling down, married, kids, same things day in and day out". I never really heard adults talk about change, growth, their many life phases and their journeys, so to hear someone reflect on the journey is really meaningful.
Yeah I can’t see myself sitting still for very long so I wonder what my 80s or when my body slows down would look like on me… I’ll post about it here on YT 🤣
I've been watching you for almost a decade and I am 28 now and I feel exactly the same way you felt In your late 20s. I feel so lost
I just turned 40 myself & it definitely is an age where you pause and really assess your journey so far. Been watching your vids for a while, also on the new channel, & I am always impressed with your measured, careful self interrogation & general insight, even when I don't always agree. Many happy returns 🥳 For me, I thought I would wd be more freaked out because at 25, I thought 40 was so old... 😅... & it's easy to look at what you don't have - I'm single & childless & definitely not wealthy....the first two by design, the latter by circumstance... 😆... but I've now leaned into what's been going well - my writing, my professional life, my immediate family & writing communities of other black creatives... I walked into the party my sisters threw me with a giant 40 in lights & instead of feeling intimidated, I felt...excited. My 20s were confusing. My 30s were sobering & now I think my 40s will be transformative. I wish the same for you!! As we say in Jamaica 🇯🇲 Nuff respec'! 🙏🏽
Thank you for the support even if we don’t see eye to eye. But yes! It’s all about the self assessment and reflection. This is our life and we’re the authors. It’s a moment to see where it’s all going and if we like where it’s headed

I think it's so fitting that your daughter's name is Saga, which means "an epic story" or "tale." Now, it really makes sense, because she is a fruit of your journey in life and your personal story.

I call my 40's re-arranging the values. Because you are no longer the same person. What are the non negotiables, what happiness looks like for me now. Its a wonderful time that leads to more solid grounded decisions!
I loved my 30s-there was a show on ABC called “Thirty Something” that was right on time-and I felt young and happy. I returned to college at 30; was getting divorced, and was a mom of a 6 year old son and 3 year old daughter. My forties were fabulous; my fifties were fire; and now I am 62 (I’ll be 63 in July 25), and I’m going full speed ahead!! You are fabulous, Maya, and live each day to the fullest with your husband and daughter! Look for a Church of Christ in your area and study the Bible with the mature ladies.
What products do you use on your hair and do you blow dry it? Would you do a wash ‘n’ go video, please? Thank you! 🙏🏽💕
🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 I have much to learn! To answer your question I’m not using anything special on my hair. It’s really pregnancy hormones that helped (I think)
What will you do differently in your 40ties if you get a chance to do it again? I just turned 40 4months ago and I have teenage children, 18 and 16. Hubby's Job takes us to different countries around the world and I have a foundation (Lupus foundation). I want to do something different and better.
God is always the right choice; He’s EVERYTHING! That’s a true testimony! Let God use you.
OMG that Harlem video brought me back.. and when you went to LA it was sunny and fun and a lot of movement in your life (a lot of hotel videos and events, etc). Your smile and laugh and overall curiosity and ferocious bravery at tackling life was always an amazing thing to see. The video that sealed the deal for me was the stunt with huge balloons outside NY Fashion Week. There was a moment that you showed your fear and doubt after all the planning and it made me realize you dealt with fear like the rest of us, but just put yourself out there. Your channel has always been an inspiration to me and others to be more brave, and take more chances in life.

I’ve been watching your videos since I was 25 (I’m 32 now) and they helped me so much to become fearless in my own way.
Especially when I was at a point of my life I didn’t know what I was doing, rewriting my goals, and figuring out my purpose.
You showed me that life isn’t linear and things will happen at their own time and that growth is an ongoing journey. Thank

Maya, I relate to your life so extremely well. I had my daughter at the age of 38 she is now 19 and the old cliché of time moving so fast has rang true with me. She is so similar to me as she is currently trying to attend university in London and I’m so proud of her. I’m looking forward to viewing your continued journey with Max and Saga. Maya I needed this video! I totally forgot you started your channel at 29! I’m turning 30 in 2 months and now I’m starting to have the motivation and drive to create the life I want. I want a different career than the corporate jobs I’ve landed in but I always was so nervous and unmotivated to start working towards my dream job. I watched your videos telling us to hustle and make moves but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Seeing you have success in your 30s and now family focused in your 40s is so inspirational. I feel like I still have a lot more life to live. I’m slowly getting over the fact that my 20s wasn’t a successful decade for me. Seeing your story helps a lot. Thank you!

thank you for sharing your story and taking the time to make this video. i just turned 28 and have felt so dissatisfied with my life but last year saw me also renew my faith in God and ever since my life has changed so much, i am now on the verge of a massive life change (moving countries for work from Africa to Europe) something i desired when i was young but the more i have grown to know God have seen that i was in no way prepared for, but God has opened these doors now, and i am ready to be bold and shameless for God and with the gifts he's given me. it was so inspiring to know that you were around this age when you started youtube, lets me know anything is possible.
Chills chile chills!!! 🥰 I remember the early days bc I was in high school and I was following this traditional sense of what I wanted to do and be after HS bc it was all about preparing for college and etc, but I didn’t really want to go bc I knew it wasn’t my thing or purpose. You were the only person I saw and watched that embarked on such a journey, and I remember being so in aww of it all bc I’ve never seen anyone do such a thing or be so willing to esp around me. I was so inspired and motivated by it, and it was also like an escape from my reality at that time bc of the uniqueness of it & I was so drawn to your journey & creativity. I still did college for a couple of years and worked while doing creative side jobs bc that’s where my heart was before deciding to go a whole different route and “follow” my dreams per se. Im 27 now, an entrepreneur, author, and I advocate for BW and children’s mental health. I still have other dreams and aspirations, but I know that your journey is what sparked that curiosity and belief that I could do something more and different bc it never left my mind and heart ever since. Nothing compares. I probably said this before but ur the sister I wanted and needed in my head 💀 I’m forever grateful for you and that you chose to share your journey with us through it all. I’m so happy for you and your new endeavors, and I seriously get so mushy and gushy seeing you with your family bc of how much you continue to grow and embrace each season of life. This literally brought tears to my eyes, you have been my Internet sister over the years, and God used you at so many points to remind me to get rid of the shame of not being where you think you should be, or life has to be the way you thought. Im a whole decade behind you, 12 years celibate and the mess of the dating world🙄, believing that the one who I will be equally yoked with will find me, choosing to work, live, earn in a way that allows me to be true to myself and make time for other ventures and plans God has for me. Im so grateful for your life, for how unconventional it is and knowing from watching that you have fought for it physically, mentally, spiritually. I am actually turning 29 this year, and while I’m hopeful and excited for the next decade coming up, there are a few areas in my life where I’m not completely happy. One thing that jumps out is marriage. The relationship I was in recently ended, and I just knew that he was my person. So the breakup threw me for a loop.
Hearing your journey through your 30s to now gives me hope that a breath of fresh air is coming and that while I may be in a valley/low right now, I’m heading towards a peak!
I loved this video! I just turned 29 and I feel like more and more the veil is being lifted, and I’m seeing things in a different way. It just makes me wonder where I’ll be in the next decade because life is so unpredictable, but I’m learning to find the beauty in that.

Maya! I don't know why this makes me so emotional! I've watched your journey since you were in New York with Jay and I loved every part of it. There is so much shame that can come with being a certain age and not achieving certain things. I'm 33 and I'm currently feeling a little lost and stuck but I'm happy to have an example of someone like you who did so much in your 30s and isn't depressed about being 40. You know the old saying-"it's a small world"? My earliest childhood worked for Prince when he was making 'Purple Rain'. That was 1984. 35 years later, he showed up at my brother's deathbed the day before he died. His name is Jonathan. We knew the guy who was the photographer for Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks. His name was Herbie. He was there when Stevie wrote and recorded that duet with Prince: 'Stand Back'. Shameless Maya: Coincidence or synchronicity?
That is the glow of happiness. I have followed you for years....... I could always tell if you were happy by the condition of your hair. Your hair thrives when you are happy and at peace. The universe is reminding me that everything can turnaround. 💜 Welcome to one of the best decades! After this you stop counting the years 🥰 and you just start enjoying the days.
This gives me hope for the future. I'm turning 30 this year and struggle with the sense that I'm "not where I'm supposed to be" - I only just got clear on a couple of the things I want from this life - one of them being family - and the awareness of a desire unrealized seems more painful then when I had no clue what I wanted. I'm hopeful that things can turn around for the better.
I started watching you in the beginning of your journey. It gave me hope that shit was gonna get better. It’s funny because it feels like I’m right where you started. I’ll be 29 in august. Broken up from my ex fiancé, started my channel and looking to relocate from my city for good.

I’m happily married. No kids yet. But, I just feel like there is so much more to life. And I’m just not sure where to make a change… Hopefully, I figure it out before I’m 40. You are an inspiration. Maya! Maya! Shameless Maya! You've been helping me on my journey as a young woman for the last 10 years! I was here for your first video and I was about 15 then, I am 25 now. At even now, at 25, I'm not feeling the pressures of being where everyone else thinks I should be because of women like you, older than myself, who have been expressing for years that where I actually need to be is where I will be placed by God---always. So I am patient, I am enjoying life, and I a making my 20s seriously enough but not allowing the expectations and desires of others to control my life. So many friends of mine have been starting their families, getting married etc. and I've been abstaining (.I talk about it on my channel ) for about 4 years now and dating (it's fun!) and I just want to thank you for sharing your life experiences with us. You changed my perspective on life at 15! and I'm 25 doing things I love because you constantly share your testimony of goodness and patience, and it is such a blessing. It has been and continues to be an honor watching you grow and evolve.

Since then, you have been like a sister I can tune in and see what has she been up to, from NY, to LA, your series, that trip where you met your husband. Makes me emotional :) because I remember how hard you had to work to get yourself together. Now, being 35, after experiencing a divorce that broke me, losing everything and trying to rebuild my life all over again I was also left with one thing: God and His love, the only thing that can keep us going.
