Bowman has under his coaching belt a 4:03, 4:04, and 4:05 400m IM. There’s no longer any arguing with “getting lucky” with talent. Along with where we’re seeing Regan’s form return to and improve on(nutty 200 fly) the second she gets with bowman, it’s just showing everyone if you wanna be world class in IM or stroke 200s… you know where to go now.
Just asking because I want to know your opinion on this. Would you want Leon to break the 400 Im record or would you rather have Phelps keep his only individual wr?
To complete some of the commentaries about records to come, you should listen to some french interviews about his preparation : those recent times before the french champs, he insisted on breaststroke, which ended with a 200 french record in 2'06"59, the best world performance of the year and less than 1s of the WR. But the real significant novelty is the victory on the 200 freestyle whith a personal record of 1'46"44, swimming in lane 1 ! We all know his value on fly and IM but he cannot beat all his records on one competition, every thing at a time, he's young, talented and motivated. His chance to realize all the promises all the commentators are talking about is that he LOVES swimming and always wants to improve. As Bowman said, he has a huge capacity to work, and it's not only a matter of biological capabilities but a matter of envy and psychological motivation. You always see a smile on his face, just like his father ! Now a small work on the backstroke, and nobody will be able to beat him, and the 2008 Michael Phelps record on 400 IM will fall. Probably in 2024 ! But I must say I am not neutral, Leon is the son of a colleague of french regional TV, Xavier Marchand, who swimmed in Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000...on 200 IM. ruclips.net/video/-dJVcIHQIfY/видео.html
He uses aqua dynamics at the fullest. Floating under water as streamlined as possible with his hips and legs being used like propellers. His style resembles a torpedo. Thank you for the footage.
Its so interesting watching his fingers and hand position in the glide portion of his stroke. His hands are so relaxed and it looks like it would create a bit more drag but I've tried since watching this race and it makes the first motion of the pull feel a lot stronger tbh
I remember the days when you couldn't do a dolphin kick on your breaststroke underwaters. I also remember when the starting blocks were mostly flat without the secondary block to push off.
Based on Leon’s ncaa 50 breastroke split and his recent 200 breastroke at French nationals I would not be surprised in the least if he could go low 57 high 56 100 breast long course.
He doesn't have the technique for that, at best a low 58. If you look at Adam Peaty's stroke rate, Leon can't compare whether or not he is more efficient. He is truly a talented breastsroke though.
Kyle first of all, nice moustache! Thanks for this video. I spoke with my swimmers about how Leon uses his head position on breaststroke, then you spoke about it. I believe that he lifted his head a little bit (doing pullout) only to get a new spot close to the surface and to connect with a powerful pull. I thinking that he blew a little bit to reduce his drag because the bubbles close to the skin reduces a little the drag (there is a video from Gary Hall senior from 2y ago talking about it). I like your videos and yes 400im 4:02:27
There's BM and AM: before Marchand and after Marchand. BM I never looked at breaststroke seriously. AM, breaststroke became a cool swimming style and I wanna learn it.
I absolutely agree with you about video, education, etc. I think we need to have a discussion about the negative impact of that taking horse head movement. We need to also talk about how strong his pull is. And how connected his fly is to his breast. Some coaches are getting a lot smarter. Many of them put shrimp on a barbie and eat lots of rice. Many Americans, including some in Colorado Springs who are coveting our performance data, think they know enough. Bowman isn't one of them. Neither are you -- great job!! Let me know if we can Zoom for my Competitive Swimmer Magazine. Steve Friederang, biomechanist and Publisher.
When he lifts his head in the UW, it changes his shape, making a bulge at the front of his body akin to the bulge at the front of a wing. This creates lift, bringing him to the surface.
While it’s an interesting comparison, the idea that lifting the head creates lift like a wing in air isn’t quite accurate in the context of swimming. Water is much denser and more viscous than air, so the dynamics are different. When Leon Marchand lifts his head slightly during the underwater pullout, it’s not about generating lift to bring him to the surface. Instead, it’s about optimizing body position and timing for a smooth breakout. In water, creating a bulge by lifting the head actually increases drag more than it generates lift. The real purpose of this movement is to prepare for the first stroke while maintaining streamline and minimizing resistance, not to rise to the surface. So, the idea of generating lift in this way doesn’t really apply to swimming.
That low head position of his makes me think about Michael Phelps and his fly. Michael's head does go below his shoulders and arms. Best guess is that this action amplifies the body wave action which adds to the power of the kick. Not sure how much this applies to breast stroke though. Never could swim it without a scissor kick. My feet will not turn out enough to get that back push from that kick.... Old and never flexible.... Very pigeon toed!
The drag from another kick or even 2 will cause you to lose more speed compared to trying to glide further in the water -I’ve never swam competitively in my life 😆
Excellent analysis. I tried to get the same on the French side but looks like FFN (French governing body) is not on point …so I’ll come back here for more good stuff. How right you are regarding how coaches are not doing the right thing …I have kids swimming in Denver and it looks like to me that they are obsessed with times and reps etc …just the freaking outcome. Absolutely not the process. They would consider weird to have 15-min Q/As with their swimmers about Marchand’s underwater…shame on them.
@@Gjfhgvbfx i can imagine that bein the case but it would be a shame to pronounce his name incorrectly since he’ll become one of the best athletes of the sport for years to come
What's the superlative for Léon Marchand refusing an autograph to a 10-year-old child? Just for information, an autograph takes 3 seconds, so what's the superlative?
Leon should write down all the sets he does so he can have a coaching career once he’s done swimming 😂

Coaching isn’t always about sets, the eye to see what’s right or wrong is far more important.

Great video bro
I’ve learned so much about underwaters from watching Leon. Absolute hypoxic nightmare.
I believe his head position during this stroke is to initiate his body ondulation from the head and a that level, it makes a difference.
Agree, but that ondulation looks too much like a dolphin kick in some way. Not saying should be illegal but kind of gray area stuff...
Thanks for the video
