@@user-ed4fp8iq1r I think it means that if you're a having a goal X, you will not achieve it if your system or lifestyle is in another direction. You'll be attracted and directed to the way your systems are going. So if you need to achieve a goal, make sure that your goal and lifestyle/system are all heading in the same direction. Don't say I wanna be healthy but when you go shoppr you buy cheetos and chips and all the bad stuff .. buy fresh vegetables instead. So when you are home and hungy you only have vegetables available to make yourself a meal. This way your goal and your system are both going the same direction not conflicting.
You are a 💯% right. I think he's on point with everything he is doing. He also saves lives. He's a great guy, can't believe I've only just discovered his channel.

I randomly applied these things to my life back when I wanted to be one of the best players of a game in our country. Back then I purposefully elevate the mood of environment by having good ventilations, comfortable seat, and drinking water each game. Never knew that with those slight changes, my mind would work better considering the game I was playing was a strategy game. Every detail within the game I was more focused and even the slightest opportunity to get an advantage I would take it. After hundreds of hours grinding I was proud to say that I became the rank 18th player of that game in the Philippines.
Hey, it's been a year since you posted your comment. Though I'm also sure at the time you posted this, if you were to look at yourself 1 year, 2 years, 5 or 10 years eariler, you'd see how far you've come instead of thinking about the gap between where you are and where you want to be. But now 1 year after the comment, done anything you consider being productive? Formed any good habits and gained more knowledge?
eh...productivity is over rated. I have SUPER productive days that wipe me out....then I have some blah days. Better to be moderately productive and maintain your life.

At 4:50 it reminds me one of the quote of Bhagavad Gita which roughly translates "The awakened sages call a person wise when all his undertakings are free from anxiety about results; all his selfish desires have been consumed in the fire of knowledge"
I stopped reading at page 32 of the book "Atomic Habits" when it asserted the idea that it held the key to quitting smoking. When you prelude your book with appeals to science, etc. and then you swap to basically trying to push the idea that your book holds the secret to quitting smoking the hardest substance to quit, harder than coke, harder than herion... if you're putting up a lie that big that quickly I seriously am starting to doubt the book's efficacy in real life. Not just because of the "British Cycling Team" footnote which at the time of writing should have been more or less "common knowledge" that anyone competing in that sport was flat out doping. How did they know Lance Armstrong was doping? BECAUSE THEY WERE DOPING TOO AND STILL LOSING. I seriously urge anyone wanting to read the book of a former brain injury patient as worthy to read at all because of the bad information found just in chapter 1 alone not just because the author claimed to have 200,000 "email subscribers" while only having 5,000 followers on RUclips here now.... I mean where do the lies start and stop? Do you blame the brain injury? Like really man cmon.
@@QuestionEverythingButWHY page 32. the example provided was that "identifying as a non-smoker" or whatever "you wanted to identify as" had any sort of efficacy but the inherent problem with referencing smoking is that we or at least most of us have observed people doing that yet still remained smokers or at least I have in my lifetime. You see smoking is harder to quit than most other harmful substances known to mankind. When the book asserts efficacy where none or very little should be expected all I have to tell you is that YOU DONT SMOKE NOR DID YOU EVER if you are doubting anything I have said up to this point. ....also explain to me why James Clear has only roughly 5,000 subscribers on youtube when he claimed to have a following of 200,000 by email? I'm really having a lot of trouble believing anything he says has meaning at this point.
I remember hearing "rushing is another form of going nowhere." I think from the workbook called 30 Days to Reduce Stress by Harper Daniels about mindfulness meditation. It's so important to stay present and build good habits.
@@adhdfitgirl some practical steps for those who want to lose weight and get in better shape: 1)Always drink a glass of water and some veggies and fruits before your actual meal! This will fill you up and you won't be able to eat a lot of the calorie densed stuff. 2)Always use the stairs. Even when going down. 3)Walk after every meal for 5min. I know this sounds very easy and but that's the point! After 2 weeks (or however you need) increase the activity level or duration! One important thing: DON'T SKIP A DAY! IF YOU'RE REALLY TIRED AND LETHARGIC, DO IT ANYWAY! YOU WON'T FEEL TIRED TOMORROW! Hope that was of some help :D

@@user-ed4fp8iq1r you don't rise to level of your goal: Usually we set high goals and get disappointed when it is not accomplished But if we rather focus on system than goal this can be avoided. Focusing of system: Systems that will build the step towards your goal. And that you can do easily and persistently For eg. My goal is to bring full marks. Puting all my focus into it will not let me bring full marks but rather building system like okay in this test I have 5 chap. I usually like studying bio first so I'll do that. And then I can follow it even after exam. That system will be permanent. If you just follow your systems you can rise.
Great summery of one of the favorite books I have read in a while. I’ve been using habit systems for about 4 years now with my meditation, yoga, reading and playing chess and this book have added more sense to it and have helped me improve my current habits and build a better identity and vision for myself. I am a behaviour specialist with a master's degree in psychology and this book is quite impressive in terms of the empirical evidence used throughout. One of my top books.
Atomic Habits is divided into 4 parts 1. Aggeregation of marginal gains: 1% improvement only a daily basis is what you need to win a marathon type competetion 2. Change of system: don't set goals and try to bluntly achieve them, instead create systems of your lifestyle, cointaining what are the things you will require to do on a dialy basis to achieve your goals i.e. scoring 98% in a exam is your goal but having a daily goal of studing 5 hours and trying to understand your subject in a better way is your system to achieve your goal. 3. Change of identity: Your identity defines who you are, identity is changed by repeated actions over doing the same thing, your set of believes compile up how you really identify yourself. If you write an assignment or a report your identity as a writer slightly improves (that means you become a little more of a writer) Thats why decide who you want to be and then adopt a identity accordingly which in turns changes your believe system and identity which will later effect your goal achieving system. 4. The four step process of changing a habit: a) Cue: which makes you remember your habit, the notification you see that you recieved just now, to create habit make it more visible or to break one just make the cue difficult to detect. b) Craving: the force or feeling to get out and get your reward, the curiocity to check what might be written in the message on your phone's notification, to create habit make it more attractive or to break one just make craving dull c) Response: the action you take to get reward, the process that you pick up the phone and check messages, to create habit make it easy to take a response or to break one just make taking acion more difficult d) Reward: the satisfaction you get after completing the task, creating a habit over a long frequency of repeatation, the dopamine doze that is released after you check the message, to create habit make it more satisfying or to break one just make the reward boring. *Some further notes:* Paper clip strategy: in this strategy we make it easy and visible to count how much are we working. for example take two jars, one with hundred paper clips and the other one empty, as you get your one phone call done, just place one paper clip from the full jar to the empty jar and by this method you would wil be to find how much progress have you made today, this is a visual habit tracking method. Goldilocks zone: we humans love challenges, but only those ones which we feel are optimum to our level of capacity, e.g you will love to play tennis with people who play just as good as you, if your opponent is too weak or too good as par your level you will loose motivation, thats why we must pull us out of our comfort zone not by much but by a little every day in order to challenge our brain and achieve a better 1% improved version everyday. I read this book a few years ago! Great refresher - I feel like i've accumulated some bad habits. I'm taking home the fact I need to change my systems rather than those habits
I am someone who personally has been guilty of being too caught up in the notion of the goal itself versus the actual process. In the past few years, I found myself achieving more by actually just caring more about the process itself rather than worrying about the final product in the end. The final product will form itself in due time. The process is what actually builds it.
Yep,, doesn't mean our goal is not important at all,, goal is like a compass that shows us the direction where we wanna go. U won't go anywhere if u don't have any direction.. probably just walking around 😆. But we have to focus on our walk (the process) to reach our goal not the "compass" itself, because that's what truly brings us to our direction (shown in the compass). Can u imagine what will happen if we focus ourselves to the compass when we're walking instead of the steps that we make? Just my opinion tho..
I rarely comment, but ill like to let you know the impact of your stuff in my life, this video in particular. I am 25 years old with huge goals, but not so long ago did not how to approach them. This focus mindset shift of "Atomic Habits" had me starting in programming (my future job) gym, journaling, music production, social dynamics, etc. Some time has passed now, and I am reaping the rewards of my effort. I am getting better in each area mentioned. Gym stills challenging, and I keep abandoning it, I guess this is because task itself is very painful (in a literal sense) but I think I was missing the "identity part". Excellent commentary. For two years, I made VG progress, learning guitar. Then I had a bereavement and, despite my guitars being within arms' length, I couldn't reach them to pick one up. So, our state of mind and happiness is important too. I've started the habit of piano and guitar again recently and hope to keep them up.

It's common for people to call a book life changing, this book actually achieves that. Upgrading your system is like installing a new graphics card and increasing you RAM in your computer. Atomic Habits is a must read for anyone who wants to improve without even noticing.
This book had big impact on my disciple and overall ability to stick to my habits. Actually I just uploaded a video today explaining the exact habits that changed my life.
I have read Atomic Habits several times and am now doing the 30 day challenge put on by James Clear (loving it by the way). This video is the best summary I've seen on the book.
The best example to understand this mindset is to observe the childrens. They grow in education or sports more than us grown ups because we define linear growth in correspondence to efforts and define their time lines. So, our growth is predefined in our minds and with predefined efforts although we may not require that much effort. Where as kids go to school open minded in a year they learn a lot without expectations or plans. So, we all must dive into the process not focus on result. I understood this when I saw children can be trained for anything sports, education, hobbies. Zero plan just effort.
10:46 I notice a bit of internal shoulder rotation during those push ups. That can lead to shoulder problems (maybe not today, but in the long run, 1 * 0,99^(the rest of your life) is bad). Try to pinch your shoulder blades during the excercise (amongst other things, search up a “push up checklist” if you want to).

I seriously urge anyone wanting to read the book of a former brain injury patient as worthy to read at all because of the bad information found just in chapter 1 alone not just because the author claimed to have 200,000 "email subscribers" while only having 5,000 followers on RUclips here now.... I mean where do the lies start and stop? Do you blame the brain injury? Like really man cmon.

@@QuestionEverythingButWHY page 32. the example provided was that "identifying as a non-smoker" or whatever "you wanted to identify as" had any sort of efficacy but the inherent problem with referencing smoking is that we or at least most of us have observed people doing that yet still remained smokers or at least I have in my lifetime. You see smoking is harder to quit than most other harmful substances known to mankind. When the book asserts efficacy where none or very little should be expected all I have to tell you is that YOU DONT SMOKE NOR DID YOU EVER if you are doubting anything I have said up to this point.
....also explain to me why James Clear has only roughly 5,000 subscribers on youtube when he claimed to have a following of 200,000 by email? I'm really having a lot of trouble believing anything he says has meaning at this point.

@@adhdfitgirl some practical steps for those who want to lose weight and get in better shape:
1)Always drink a glass of water and some veggies and fruits before your actual meal!
This will fill you up and you won't be able to eat a lot of the calorie densed stuff.
2)Always use the stairs.
Even when going down.
3)Walk after every meal for 5min.
I know this sounds very easy and but that's the point!
After 2 weeks (or however you need) increase the activity level or duration!
One important thing:
DON'T SKIP A DAY!
IF YOU'RE REALLY TIRED AND LETHARGIC, DO IT ANYWAY!
YOU WON'T FEEL TIRED TOMORROW!

Usually we set high goals and get disappointed when it is not accomplished
But if we rather focus on system than goal this can be avoided.
Focusing of system:
Systems that will build the step towards your goal. And that you can do easily and persistently
For eg. My goal is to bring full marks. Puting all my focus into it will not let me bring full marks but rather building system like okay in this test I have 5 chap. I usually like studying bio first so I'll do that. And then I can follow it even after exam. That system will be permanent. If you just follow your systems you can rise.

I am a behaviour specialist with a master's degree in psychology and this book is quite impressive in terms of the empirical evidence used throughout. One of my top books.
What does empirical evidence mean? :)
Atomic Habits is divided into 4 parts
1. Aggeregation of marginal gains: 1% improvement only a daily basis is what you need to win a marathon type competetion
2. Change of system: don't set goals and try to bluntly achieve them, instead create systems of your lifestyle, cointaining what are the things you will require to do on a dialy basis to achieve your goals i.e. scoring 98% in a exam is your goal but having a daily goal of studing 5 hours and trying to understand your subject in a better way is your system to achieve your goal.
3. Change of identity: Your identity defines who you are, identity is changed by repeated actions over doing the same thing, your set of believes compile up how you really identify yourself. If you write an assignment or a report your identity as a writer slightly improves (that means you become a little more of a writer) Thats why decide who you want to be and then adopt a identity accordingly which in turns changes your believe system and identity which will later effect your goal achieving system.
4. The four step process of changing a habit:
a) Cue: which makes you remember your habit, the notification you see that you recieved just now, to create habit make it more visible or to break one just make the cue difficult to detect.
b) Craving: the force or feeling to get out and get your reward, the curiocity to check what might be written in the message on your phone's notification, to create habit make it more attractive or to break one just make craving dull
c) Response: the action you take to get reward, the process that you pick up the phone and check messages, to create habit make it easy to take a response or to break one just make taking acion more difficult
d) Reward: the satisfaction you get after completing the task, creating a habit over a long frequency of repeatation, the dopamine doze that is released after you check the message, to create habit make it more satisfying or to break one just make the reward boring.
*Some further notes:*
Paper clip strategy: in this strategy we make it easy and visible to count how much are we working. for example take two jars, one with hundred paper clips and the other one empty, as you get your one phone call done, just place one paper clip from the full jar to the empty jar and by this method you would wil be to find how much progress have you made today, this is a visual habit tracking method.
Goldilocks zone: we humans love challenges, but only those ones which we feel are optimum to our level of capacity, e.g you will love to play tennis with people who play just as good as you, if your opponent is too weak or too good as par your level you will loose motivation, thats why we must pull us out of our comfort zone not by much but by a little every day in order to challenge our brain and achieve a better 1% improved version everyday.

I read this book a few years ago! Great refresher - I feel like i've accumulated some bad habits. I'm taking home the fact I need to change my systems rather than those habits
I am someone who personally has been guilty of being too caught up in the notion of the goal itself versus the actual process. In the past few years, I found myself achieving more by actually just caring more about the process itself rather than worrying about the final product in the end. The final product will form itself in due time. The process is what actually builds it.

Yep,, doesn't mean our goal is not important at all,, goal is like a compass that shows us the direction where we wanna go. U won't go anywhere if u don't have any direction.. probably just walking around 😆.
But we have to focus on our walk (the process) to reach our goal not the "compass" itself, because that's what truly brings us to our direction (shown in the compass). Can u imagine what will happen if we focus ourselves to the compass when we're walking instead of the steps that we make?

ya and thsi is because habits are by definition who you are. as in "i am someone who does x" is your identity and habit. Achievement is not related.
I rarely comment, but ill like to let you know the impact of your stuff in my life, this video in particular. I am 25 years old with huge goals, but not so long ago did not how to approach them. This focus mindset shift of "Atomic Habits" had me starting in programming (my future job) gym, journaling, music production, social dynamics, etc. Some time has passed now, and I am reaping the rewards of my effort. I am getting better in each area mentioned.
Gym stills challenging, and I keep abandoning it, I guess this is because task itself is very painful (in a literal sense) but I think I was missing the "identity part". I will try again and see how it goes.

For two years, I made VG progress, learning guitar. Then I had a bereavement and, despite my guitars being within arms' length, I couldn't reach them to pick one up.
So, our state of mind and happiness is important too.
I've started the habit of piano and guitar again recently and hope to keep them up.
Sometimes, I buy books not really to ready them but to thank the authors. Channels like this already gave us the gist.
I was skeptical about watching a summary of the book, however i must say i am impressed, you not only gave a great summary you also gave examples of how you implemented them into your own life. Great JOB.

This book had big impact on my disciple and overall ability to stick to my habits. Actually I just uploaded a video today explaining the exact habits that changed my life.
I have read Atomic Habits several times and am now doing the 30 day challenge put on by James Clear (loving it by the way). This video is the best summary I've seen on the book.
The best example to understand this mindset is to observe the childrens.
They grow in education or sports more than us grown ups because we define linear growth in correspondence to efforts and define their time lines.
So, our growth is predefined in our minds and with predefined efforts although we may not require that much effort.
Where as kids go to school open minded in a year they learn a lot without expectations or plans.
So, we all must dive into the process not focus on result.
I understood this when I saw children can be trained for anything sports, education, hobbies.
Zero plan just effort.

10:46 I notice a bit of internal shoulder rotation during those push ups. That can lead to shoulder problems (maybe not today, but in the long run, 1 * 0,99^(the rest of your life) is bad).
Try to pinch your shoulder blades during the excercise (amongst other things, search up a “push up checklist” if you want to).
