It's reverse from what most people think. You bite it to confirm it ISN'T soft. People used to dilute the gold with lead, making it way weaker. You bite to test that there's no lead in it.
That's what old cartoons have taught me. I don't remember what shows/movies, but I definitely remember characters biting down on gold to test it and being delighted when it came out intact and rigid.
If an Olympic gold metal is really just silver with a gold coat, is a silver metal just bronze with a silver coat? Then what's in the core of a bronze metal? Cream cheese? Mashed potatoes?
I remember learning to treat lead like going to the toilet, ie always wash hands, they didn’t say it but I’m pretty sure that means to not bite it either 😂
Cody, I enjoy your videos very much. The way you present your findings and information in a logical and easy to understand manner make these extra enjoyable to watch. I just wanted to say I appreciate all of your videos and the time you take to make them. Thanks!
It's so nice to see your channel growing so quickly! I remember watching you when you had like 5 videos uploaded thinking "man if he keeps at it he's going to get huge". I wasn't even that into science before I started watching your videos. It's nice watching videos where you actually learn something.
Cody, it's fascinating and very interesting and simply wonderful how you not only perform experiments but that you do them so well and thoroughly. Thanks!
i love how zero of his titles are click bait he is all about being true i love it cody keep up the work of being the awesome science machine of a man you are:)
the best 9999 gold bar testing utube i have ever seen, way better than other videos which they are wasting my time to talk craps and not actually testing the gold. this vid taught me a lot of things. You got the point, the real PURE gold won't oxidized but gold plated gold will. thumbs up! btw i have the same map gas from home depot!
Well. You could technically lay much more(or less) force behind the center punch depending on your weight/strength. Because you still push on it after it has "fired" (bottomed out). I.e. Aluminium is quite soft. And I have made various "depths" depending on how I do the "punch maneuver". Makes sense?
I was always a silver and gold buyer, especially 100oz silver bars, but platinum is ridiculously low in price compared to gold. I'd be buying the rarer 1oz platinum bars instead or silver bars. Never buy precious metal coins(unless you get an amazing deal), always buy bullion which is much closer to the spot price. I expect a pullback in metals(short term), then load up. :-) Just the fact that the gold bars being sold on Ebay are only 8-30 dollars, that should tell people something. Bars that are stamped can be fairly hard from the compression, but cast bars that have been quenched, also are fairly hard. Nice gift the gold crowns. $200 gold value.
Tin is the main reason that you bite the coins. If tin is alloyed by poor smelting practices it "cries" when bitten. You would hit it against a marble slab on old registers to her the correct sound.
i dont think so, iron is specifically used in the haemoglobin part of you red blood cells, which allows oxygen atoms to attach to them. I dont think gold can replace these iron atoms, but if you could, that would be a great form of savings! lol
no...? But if you eat lead or mercury it will.... If your iron is replaced with ANYTHING other than more iron, your body is fucked. Gold is actually one of the only metals that your body doesn't reject or react badly with if ingested in pure form. It's also great for some implants for this reason
it's so funny seeing cody show the hardness of metals by biting them instead of refering to some professional hardness tests or doing one himself :'D (also I'm a learned Metalworker, which makes alot of your stuff VERY interesting to me, so keep that up!)
I've heard it said that biting into gold comes from times when Pb was used as a counterfeit. Meaning you bit into it, and if it was dented considerably, it meant that Pb was the core of the bar.
Hay cody great video youve answered some of my questions ive had about gold for quite some time now.boy i wish i made enpugh to buy that much gold with one paycheck kudos bud
Not to worry about losing the "collectors value" on that bar. They are not recognized as having anything but the value of the gold content, which is certified. I have some, they are easy to come by. Most gold coins however, may have additional "collectors value" depending on demand especially if they are more rare.
+Go IntoTheCalm, harder materials (or at least materials that make a harder alloy). Other than tungsten through platinum, plutonium, and neptunium, gold is the densest metal.
+Matthew Smith And you should, but best practices and what's practically dangerous are different things. Keep in mind, people who handle lead are likely to be handling a lot of lead over time. So it isn't one time, it's chronic exposure.
The process of heating and then cooling metal to return it to a more malleable state is called annealing. Just in case anyone was wondering. It's something I learned on my degree when we did fine metalwork.
Sammy, lead compounds can be toxic. Pure lead is not. However, if 230 grains of pure lead is accelerated to 850 fps, it can penetrate the skin and thus it can be quite dangerous.
+Blaine Nay Okay I'm sorry I thought lead on it own was a neurotoxin. Although I imagine there would be some oxides on it, and other lead compounds. It's just a bad idea in general to bite lead, although I'm glad he didn't do anything life threatening
Ingestion in sufficient quantities is toxic, though chelation can treat it rather easily, and considering that he grew up around lead mines and returns there over the summer, I'm sure that he is aware of the symptoms and knows a doctor that is comfortable with treating it.
I always thought mock-biting Olympic (world championship, Commonwealth games, whatever) medals looked kind of cheesy. Are you testing to see if it's solid gold? It isn't. Never was. So what's the point of doing it? Gold plated silver alloy, most likely. And now I see athletes "biting" silver and bronze medals, which makes no sense at all.
I get the feeling Cody likes gold not because of its mouth-watering value but strictly because of how interesting its physical properties are. Kudos to you, man.
You should make a video on the creation of different crystals with various chemicals, perhaps test for piezoelectric elements in each of the crystals of different chemical composition? That would certainly be interesting!
It's reverse from what most people think. You bite it to confirm it ISN'T soft. People used to dilute the gold with lead, making it way weaker. You bite to test that there's no lead in it.
Yeah I've heard this too. It was on no such thing as a fish a while ago.
Ye it's said that fake gold coins can be bent with your teeth in the pirate ages
Toby Messerli I believe it was on QI too, once... =)
That's what old cartoons have taught me. I don't remember what shows/movies, but I definitely remember characters biting down on gold to test it and being delighted when it came out intact and rigid.
***** Exactly my point...
Next Video: Biting Plutonium
Yeah but he is obviously going to chew on non toxic metals
Now thats just inconsistent
I think if Cody could get his hands on some plutonium (he can't) he would probably bite it.
Nah, Pu is to hard.
ProgHead777 // If he would want some pu, he would just build a nuclear reactor!
I mean if private energy companies making nuclear reactors can get it, why can't he?
If an Olympic gold metal is really just silver with a gold coat, is a silver metal just bronze with a silver coat? Then what's in the core of a bronze metal? Cream cheese? Mashed potatoes?
Bronze medal is gold coated with bronze
lol, not too sure about that one..
+The Sexiest Turtle Ever perhaps solid bronze
Aluminum obviously...
its actually filled with a vacuum! dyson i think ;)
This Episode of Cody's Lab was brought to you by the American Dental Association.
I thought you were going to bite the gold while it was red hot.
Yeah, it's not like he NEEDED those tongs to hold a hot metal anyways, right..?
same
That would be insanely painful
It would make it much softer though!
me2 i was getting nervous
i wish he would do a face reveal
yeah, that would be cool.
Revealed to be bill nye the science guy
nice
No one would like him then
No, people don't think he is like Bill Nye, but it do. He is the black science man.
I was scared you were gonna bite the crowns..
2:25
ah yes, biting lead, known to be an extremely toxic metal.
truly, safety is a priority here.
I eat paint
Fishermen bite fishing sinkers all the time and they don’t seem to be bothered by it. Lighten up and live.
"The cool thing about gold is that it cools off very quickly." Thumbs up for that one, Cody
Ah yes Coda's new song B i t i n g G o l d
I remember learning about the "bite-test-to-determine-metal-hardness" in my graduate material science classes, Lol.
hi action lab
omg action lab
I remember learning to treat lead like going to the toilet, ie always wash hands, they didn’t say it but I’m pretty sure that means to not bite it either 😂

I love biting all of my precious metals
It's so nice to see your channel growing so quickly! I remember watching you when you had like 5 videos uploaded thinking "man if he keeps at it he's going to get huge". Cody, it's fascinating and very interesting and simply wonderful how you not only perform experiments but that you do them so well and thoroughly. Thanks!
Thanks for this video Cody I actually learned some things I didn't know before. Keep up the good work man!
i love how zero of his titles are click bait he is all about being true i love it cody keep up the work of being the awesome science machine of a man you are:)
I can't believe you bit into $1,200
I can't believe you thought that was real, dumbass
I can't believe you thought it was fake, because it a genuine gold bar. If you bite in it, it still holds it's melt value
I love your videos! I learn so much from you. Keep em coming!

great video, homie
a simple cheap tool for comparing metal hardness is an automatic center punch, it is pretty much calibrated to impact at a constant level every time
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_center_punch
Thats a good idea actually.
+Cody'sLab sup cody
+totally not stewie love the vids
Well. You could technically lay much more(or less) force behind the center punch depending on your weight/strength. Because you still push on it after it has "fired" (bottomed out).

Cody you have the best videos on RUclips. You rock
Another great video Cody keep up the good work
Cody, you're weird, amazing, yet weird. :D
jeff williams is master of gold chewing
lol, yes he is.
SO C'MON, LET'S GO! that guy is awesome.
He's a legend!
Cody thank you for putting this video's on RUclips. I learn a lot.
You are brilliant :)
I love this channel.
Let's all send cody thing to bite for hardness testing!
My dick
deez nuts
Cordage made from spider webs!
Paper :D
I believe that is President elect Deez Nuts
Cool! :D
the video was uploaded 2 minutes ago.. 6 hours ago you posted.. stop messing with time you're hurting my brain.
Lol 6 hours ago
Hi Grant Thompson
hello grant
+Fjdbend Fllf woah bro
That was awesome. Thank you for teaching me these things!
I'm shocked at how beautiful the gold bar was even after being heated and cooled. It kept the image very well!
I was always a silver and gold buyer, especially 100oz silver bars, but platinum is ridiculously low in price compared to gold. I'd be buying the rarer 1oz platinum bars instead or silver bars. I bet platinum worked out well for you lol. I'm hopeful to get price discovery on silver within the decade.
This was good advice 5 years ago. 🤦♂
I have a gold ak47 trigger. trying to figure out it's true composition. i sawed into it and inside it looks gold colored too. lol.
I've seen those, its made from brass.
woah, it's Mattv2099 in a Cody's Lab video!
Tin is the main reason that you bite the coins. If tin is alloyed by poor smelting practices it "cries" when bitten. You would hit it against a marble slab on old registers to her the correct sound.
Fantastic Cody! Really informative.
Wow this video was really interesting keep up the good work cody!
0:21 right middle, Olympic Obama. :D
Searching "Biting Gold" in google also brings up Cody there with the Olympians. :D
Now that was an "impressionable" experiment.
you deserve more likes. that was an amazing joke.
I'm going to start buying gold when my channel get as big as yours. I'm glad you did the bite test with different items, so I don't have to.
You got yourself a subscriber laddie. Good video!
Cody if i eat gold will it replace the iron in my body with gold?
i dont think so, iron is specifically used in the haemoglobin part of you red blood cells, which allows oxygen atoms to attach to them. I dont think gold can replace these iron atoms, but if you could, that would be a great form of savings! lol
no
no
no...? But if you eat lead or mercury it will....
If your iron is replaced with ANYTHING other than more iron, your body is fucked. Gold is actually one of the only metals that your body doesn't reject or react badly with if ingested in pure form. It's also great for some implants for this reason
You can actually eat paper thin gold sheets
your shirts on inside out
There was a stain...
xD
+Cody'sLab lol
Was it an incriminating stain? >_>
That's what they all say.
Informative Cody... thx. Always wondered about this.
I love the channel and video's cody! KEEP IT UP!
bite into the red hot gold waaaaay softer and a bit spicy XD
Cody you should try to extract bismuth from pepto bismol!
Nile Red has done something similar to that on his channel if you would like to check it out.
This video is amazing, fantastic work :) thank you
it's so funny seeing cody show the hardness of metals by biting them instead of refering to some professional hardness tests or doing one himself :'D (also I'm a learned Metalworker, which makes alot of your stuff VERY interesting to me, so keep that up!)
I would love to have a tungsten sword
I use a tungsten steel sushi knife for work. Its name is Shinobi.
I bet it's the best knife there
i love it. barely ever needs to be sharpened.
It definitely hold an edge a lot longer than a steel blade
I bet its heavy
Are you planning to celebrate your 750,000 subscriber by doing a melting a diamond video?
you cannot melt a diamond. it is physically impossible
+YouJustCantBeatMeGuy (Lyrite) false diamond melts at 3550 C. please don't talk out of your ass.
I think it also needs to be done in a vacuum otherwise it changes from solid to gas. Like I said "I think".
You can melt it, but not in high amounts and its very expensive.
+Henry Yeah, it will combine with O2 and form CO2.
Always love seeing new videos in my sub box
great video cody
Is ok to hold Bismuth in your house or to touch with bare hands?
You saw the tumblr post too?
yes, in fact pepto bismo (medication) contains bismuth.
+Nova - no, i had an argument with my grandfather
Vlad Mihailov oh okay
+Nova - but I will search for it
I've heard it said that biting into gold comes from times when Pb was used as a counterfeit. Meaning you bit into it, and if it was dented considerably, it meant that Pb was the core of the bar.

Brings new meaning to biting the bullet. lol, good job Cody
Hey my name is cody! today we are going to eat gold :3
Soz cody i love you! :D greetz from Denmark
Das cute
+Kamal AL-Hinai what is cute? 😗
Your profile picture...and you
+Kamal AL-Hinai thanks i guess 😊
"snap" brakes a tooth biting metal
Why does your channel have to be so awesome
Appreciate this. Needed the information for writing. 👍
0:24 Obama won a gold medal apparently. LOL
ha ha ha sho fahny
i actually looked
yeah, he won a Nobel Peace prize. right before starting conflicts in 7 countries and drone bombing children and wedding parties.
ow my fucking god i did not notice that
I'm talking about a picture that's noticeable in the video, i get two geniuses with some B.S Political Mumbo Jumbo.
This is kind of silly but do you have any advice for first time precious metal buyers?
Buy from a reputable company or dealer, not someone in China on eBay.
buy from apmex, silvertowne, provident, atltantis mint, monarch precious metals
Go to an actual coin shop.
+Cody'sLab thats ok but usually over priced
Love all videos. ...but notice how your Gold videos kick ass
dang your growing so fast I remember like 20k subs :o keep it up!
Cody no! Not a PAMP bar!
Don't worry you paid for it by watching advertising on this channel.
Go IntoTheCalm I suppose I helped in a way. Why couldn't he have a non-sealed one
:(
+Morgan Mitchell (Nagromicous) there very common no collector value
Not to worry about losing the "collectors value" on that bar. They are not recognized as having anything but the value of the gold content, which is certified. I have some, they are easy to come by.

yes.

+Go IntoTheCalm, osmium falls into tungsten through platinum.
Can you gold with bite?
It'd all squish lol
Keep stacking the Au Cody!
I love your videos
did he just bite lead?!?!
yeah i wouldnt do that and he bit the thoriated tungsten rod i wouldnt bite either of those.
No biggie, he didn't eat it, and casting bullets puts out more lead fumes.
rich5562000 yeah but i have been told if you even handle lead you should wash your hands thouroughly before even touching your mouth/food.
hink about how many fisherman bite led weights....It's not harmful in that small of a dosage.
+Matthew Smith And you should, but best practices and what's practically dangerous are different things.
Keep in mind, people who handle lead are likely to be handling a lot of lead over time. So it isn't one time, it's chronic exposure.
where is kanyon
behind the camera
The process of heating and then cooling metal to return it to a more malleable state is called annealing. Just in case anyone was wondering. It's something I learned on my degree when we did fine metalwork.
Seven minutes of Cody biting things...
I never thought I'd watch such an interesting video.
Anonymous person donates two gold teeth, sounds like someone has German ancestry.
Lol
As a German I find this very funny.
Ja!
Americans did the same to the Japanese fyi.
+Dennis B But nobody remembers that because history is written by the victors
+Anticonny That is slightly more terrifying than you getting upset about it...
You should have bitten the dental crowns.....
They are Made to bite with so I guess oh wouldn't Really do anything
Cody always love your videos can you please make more on mining and blasting cheers
Cody is a genius in my book.
Cody why did you bite lead are you crazy
Why crazy? It's harmless.
Sammy, lead compounds can be toxic. Pure lead is not. However, if 230 grains of pure lead is accelerated to 850 fps, it can penetrate the skin and thus it can be quite dangerous.
But that's a whole different problem then, lol.

Because you don't see silver and bronze medallists bite theirs. It's a "message" of sorts :D
Re-read: "...now I see athletes "biting" silver..." I have seen this, and it's completely silly..
Olympic medals were solid gold at some point... 1904, 1908, 1912 - they were smaller and they stopped awarding real gold due to wars.
i'm pretty sure that the only reason they bite gold medals is the press
You may be quite right.
Ive learned a lot from you, thanks.
Whoever sent in those dental crowns is very generous. You da real MVP.
was that a bad idea biting that lead bullet?
Olympic medals are gold plated so the bite test is pointless.
I think it's just tradition lol
Its not a tradition, more like a trend.
now days they have 0 gold
+Sor Sor Science07 still solid silver under that coating tho
They were solid gold at some point.
Cody's Lab, the only channel where thousands of people will watch a man bite various metals on video.
Local man bites shiny rocks.
Vas Saus you won't believe what happens next
Dude, did you actually... bite lead?
yes
+Cody'sLab Cody Reeder is the new Chuck Norris. when Cody bites lead, the lead dies of lead poisoning.
Do you think thats dangerous or something?
It takes a bit more lead than just touching it to your teeth to poison you. I mean, not a whole lot more, but what Cody did wasn't terribly unsafe.
EAT LEAD, BAD GUY!
lol when he heated the gold he said 'okay' and I thought he was about to bite a red-hot gold bar after biting lead. Cody will do anything for science
Cody refines, digs for, identifies, searches for, mines for, tests, and now chews precious metals
Awsome fan, whoever you are! im sure cody will do something cool with that bit of gold :3
I can feel it, another piece that will go into a golden play button for when the time comes. Made with real teeth of a fan.
Superb like. Very few people can connect chemistry and material science to fun stuffs.
Man bites lead for our entertainment. Still loving the lab in 2023!
This is not your run of the mill video. This is awesome.
"You can bite gold and.. you can bite with gold" Bless his heart he was so proud of that. Genuinely funny tho. Loved the vid.
usually Cody strikes me as a Genius....... but every once in a while... he tries to bite steel. haha j/k love u man
I get the feeling Cody likes gold not because of its mouth-watering value but strictly because of how interesting its physical properties are. Kudos to you, man.
Mouth watering? Ha!
You should make a video on the creation of different crystals with various chemicals, perhaps test for piezoelectric elements in each of the crystals of different chemical composition? That would certainly be interesting!
10k likes in 2hrs, gratz man you're popular =D
Another one bites the dust - except Cody, Cody bites gold.
Only Cody bites gold in the middle of the night with the chirps of crickets
Very informative and very cool
