One Piece: 10 Things Eiichiro Oda Didn't Plan One of the best twists at the start of the Grand Line is that one of the villains pursuing the Straw Hat gang was secretly infiltrating the villainous mafia-esque Baroque Works. This group was destabilizing her country, and she made the choice to fight them from within. This surprise twist fits into the story so smoothly, and provides the start of a well-regarded story arc - that this is unplanned is all the more surprising. Oda revealed why Vivi returned and her part was expanded in the 21st One Piece Collection, basing it on his character design of her with her hair down: "[...] I didn't think more about her. But, one time I drew Miss Wednesday with her hair down, and found, 'Ohh she looks like a princess!'" Shanks Showing up at Marineford Red-Haired Shanks is the pirate who urged Luffy into the life of piracy and is an inspiration to many in the story. The Marineford War marked the end of a generation and the start of a new one. While it makes perfect sense that Shanks would appear at this critical point in Luffy's story, it's doubtful this was the original plan. During the Impel Down arc, just a day earlier in-universe, readers are told that Shanks and his crew are fighting with an extremely dangerous pirate warlord named Kaido, and is expected to be busy for weeks. Oda has not commented on this the plan for this moment specifically - but Shank's arrival is strange and counters the established lore of navigating the Grand Line. but it does bookend the first half of Luffy's journey, as well as gave Luffy an opening to flee. Ace Being Gol D. Roger's Son As Luffy's adopted brother as well as right-hand man to Whitebeard, Portgas D. Ace's story couldn't have been completely unplanned. Luffy's brother and the heartwarming friendship they shared were always going to be tied into the lore of the series. But while Ace's death at Marineford launched the main heroes on their path towards the second half of the series, it's likely that Luffy and Ace's fathers were swapped in production. Luffy's story strongly follows that of Roger, from the path he takes on the Grand Line to their signature straw hat. Ace's story, while not followed closely, seems to put him more firmly in opposition to the world government. Considering Oda's frequent theme of family and 'inherited will' would make Ace more likely as the son of the revolutionary Dragon. Lucci Being a Villain Rob Lucci first appears in the Water 7 Arc as a shipwright, but he is a relatively unassuming character. The twist of the arc is that Lucci is secretly working with the world government to attain the plans for a superweapon. Oda didn't necessarily originally intend to make Lucci the villain. As he says in the 22nd One Piece Collection: "After drawing various characters, I wondered, 'Whom should I make a villain?'" Lucci is an intriguing character in many ways - he is attractive, skilled with his hands, and a capable ventriloquist. His sudden betrayal was not part of his initial character design, but this turn provided many characters with the emotional punch and pressure they needed to keep moving through the arc. The mountains of Drum Island are visually stunning. The nearly vertical mountains provide the island with a very distinctive silhouette, as well as a striking skyline for the nearly inhospitable island. The realization that the mountains could look like tree trunks thanks to colored snow came later, as he noted in the 25th One Piece Collection: "Wait... Does it mean I can wrap up Drum Island arc thanks to cherry blossoms??" Throughout the arc, Chopper has flashbacks to his mentor telling him stories of how the sight of beautiful cherry trees could cure anything, even a frozen nation. The emotional climax of this arc is when Dr. Kureha fires pink dye into the snow clouds, causing them to look like cherry trees. Doflamingo and Corazon Being Related Many manga artists come up with distinctive character designs first and then write background later. This is part of the reason that Doflamingo and Corazon Donquixote were not originally planned as siblings. One of the most hated characters Doflamingo is well contrasted by his tender-hearted brother. While Oda has not stated this clearly, there are some subtle signs that these characters were paired together after the fact. With more than 500 chapters/episodes between the first appearance of Doflamingo and Corazon, it's unlikely Doflamingo had much character planned beyond 'this looks cool.' On top of this, Oda tends to be very intentioned in his design within families - even those not related by blood tend to share a resemblance (like Nami and Bell-mère). These two characters don't share a strong resemblance or general style like others do. The Shichibukai in General The story of One Piece is one of piracy. Clashing with other pirates over the title of 'pirate king' was always planned- but who those pirates would be has shifted. Originally the plan was for the 4 Emperors - the 'Yonko' - to be the primary villains. This is particularly clear from the base plot - Luffy leaving to become Pirate King would make these 4 excellent 'final bosses.' But Oda added in the Shichibukai - the 7 Warlords of the Sea - who were pirates siding with the government. In the 23rd Collection, he noted that they became central to the story purely because he thought they looked cool! Supernovas Making it to the New World The 'Supernovas' are also known as the 'Worst Generation.' These 9 characters are the young upstart pirates who have earned a special reputation due to their large bounties and direct actions against the World Government. These 9 main characters grow to be more distinctive and central in the arcs after the Marineford War. The Sabaody arc, which began the lead-up to the time-skip, introduced a lot of characters and concepts. The New World has proven dangerous enough that apparently few, if any, were expected to last long: "[...] I thought about half of them would drop out of tough New World already!" Oda wrote this in the 23rd collection back in 2017, and the Supernovas are still going strong! Trafalgar Law Becoming a Central Character One of the most important 'Supernovas' is Trafalgar Law. As a pirate captain himself, he is at first antagonistic with Luffy. But as time goes on, the Straw Hats and Law's Heart Pirate crews come to be friendly with each other. Though it comes to be revealed that Law is a survivor of a mining colony that was poisoned by their product, it's likely that Law was originally intended to die at Marineford. Like many characters, before the time skip he lacked a lot of the characterization that we find endearing today. In the same note he wrote about the Supernovas, he noted that "I didn't imagine he would become such an important character. Weekly serialization is a wonderland." The Series Lasting Originally, Oda hadn't planned for the series to last past the early '00s. He is often asked about the potential future of the manga and the related anime, and in an early interview he stated he expected the series to end around 2002 - this would have placed the end of the series in the middle of the Alabasta Arc. In the 23rd Collection, he stated "At first, I intended to finish ONE PIECE in 5 years." but with the introduction of the Shichibukai, the story continued on for nearly 20 years.
One big mistake you made is saying there wouldn't be a paramount war. There would always be a war. With or without Ace, as Black Beard was going to capture Luffy to become a warlord but Ace got to him first. So it would be a war over Luffy instead which could have Ace and whitebeard trying to save him or Shanks and the Redhair pirates, or even the revolutionary army, or all 3.
No blackbeard ho no intention of turning in luffy alive he had every intention of killing luffy and delivering his head to the navy. So no there would not have been a paramount war.
Thing is, similar to Luffy, Ace can grow exponentially from his fights as well. His sparring with WB is an evidence of that. Even Jimbei was impressed on how much growth Ace had in such short notice. He could've definitely beat Katakuri or at least stalemated him like with Jimbei. But not Big Mom though.
In the end, the only "safe path" was the main timeline path as it gave Ace a bit more of a boost-if not a slight one-in his skills/abilities because with the Big Mom or Kaido paths he was going in a bit underpowered. The only difference is those paths unlike the main timeline path is he had one thing it didn't:him not being a donut
Ace did it to himself. Had he listened to his father, a man who rivaled his bio-dad and left Blackbeard alone he'd be alive. It was bloody Whitebeard who said he had an uneasy feeling about it. Who wouldn't listen to that experience talking? Then in Marineford when he was all but gone, he let that jerk Akainu get into his head and it cost him his life, and almost Luffy's too. He had the safest route, and all he had to do was listen to experience. This is a warning to all you young men who think you know better; if some oldhead is talking, listen. They didn't get old by chance. If you want to live to be old, listen.
the series ends far earlier than marineford in the Kaido path, Ace isn't on Alabasta to save luffy from Smoker, Luffy gets captured and sent to impel down series over
Is it possible in the Kaido ending that Ace would meet Hyogoro and be trained in advanced haki. Even if it didn't make him strong enough to beat Kaido it may have made him strong enough to break out with his crew and maybe save some prisoners.
The one thing I think I might disagree with is that the lack of a Paramount War would lead to Luffy entering the New World unprepared. Yeah, in this timeline, we don't get the Paramount War, but Luffy still gets his ass handed to him by Kuzon before Water 7, and both Kizaru and Kuma at Sabaody. So even though the Straw Hats will reunite earlier, I think there's still a chance Luffy gets trained by Reyleigh. Because Luffy isn't stupid, his outright loss to Kizaru at Sabaody was enough to teach him that his crew still isn't strong enough to reach for the top, even after their collective boosts during Enies Lobby. I can easily imagine this leading to the whole crew trying to come up with a plan for the New World at Shakky's Rip-off Bar, only for Reyleigh to then propose training Luffy just like before, as he already knew that Luffy is the man Shanks is betting on. So I think the difference in this scenario is that either the Straw Hats get training from other people they meet through Reyleigh and most (if not all) of them end up with different power ups for The New World, or they ALL undergo the training on the island with Luffy, and each ends up learning at least one form of Haki.
I think that there would still be a paramount war even if Ace died at Wano, iirc Blackbeard's original plan prior to being confronted by Ace was actually to capture Luffy and give him over to the government to become a warlord. Even if it didnt manage to start a war as massive as paramount, Luffy would still be alive with his crew having a chance to retrieve him.
No blackbeard would have killed luffy and deliver his head. Blackbeard only kept ace alive since he wanted to use ace as bait to get whitebeard fruit. He would not have that same insensitive for luffy since blackbeard had no clue who the hell luffy was he just knew that killing luffy would get him the warlord status he wanted.
I mean, most of these are fairly sad. But I can see a situation where one of these events becomes Ace's Sabaody moment. The Spade Pirates come back stronger than ever and maybe, just maybe Ace can actually go all the way up to King. No, I don't think Ace gets to any Yonko unless he gets the premium version of Luffy's training. The premium version has Ace learning not just basic Haki, but advanced as well. Who will mentor Ace, no idea.
You forgot about the Marine path in which Ace becomes a marine at Garp’s wishes. Only to be discovered by Sakazuki to be Roger’s son and turned into a donut as punishment
Still weird to add it don't you think? Considering he doesn't really care much for it otherwise and why do a whole fake arm when you can just tie it up
Honestly, the Kaido path will turn sideways when Luffy hears from Garp what happened to Ace. if Garp doesn't go in to try and fight Kaido (which he probably would consider), then Luffy may consider it. I still think that the timeskip training will still occur because of advice from Rayleigh. I do suspect that rescuing Ace will be part of Luffy's mission into the New World. The Wano conflict may stll drag in the Whitebeard pirates. As for Katakuri, you're forgetting he fights mainly with sticky rice dough. Ace's fire will burn and or melt it, leaving Katakuri in some serious trouble. And Ace could take hits from freakin Blackbeard. So Ace has a solid chance against Katakuri.
It just occurred to me how convenient Luffy’s experiences against Big Mom and Kaido were. 1) They happened after a 2-year timeskip in which the Straw Hats and some other characters got a lot stronger but Big Mom and Kaido seemingly didn’t (considering they were emperors before the timeskip as well, and suddenly Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji are able to 1-v-1 the emperors and their commanders when thry would have had no chance pre-timeskip). Either that or the Straw Hats’ growth is truly exceptional. 2) Luffy invaded Kaido and Big Mom’s territories at very inconvenient times for the emperors. Big Mom was throwing a wedding and enacting a murder plot at the same time, and her resources were both stretched thin with preparations and not as easily mobilized at once (there were not commonly multiple threats present at the same time, like how Luffy fought two sweet commanders 1-on-1 instead of together, as Ace might have). Luffy and his Samurai also were able to infiltrate Kaido’s festival bash instead of just charging Onigashima while there were more active lookouts and the like. Granted, almost all of Kaido’s army WAS on Onigashima because of the festival, but they only made it to Onigashima in the way they did because of the element of surprise. In each of these Ace stories, he kind of just charges in and gets walloped.

On top of this, Oda tends to be very intentioned in his design within families - even those not related by blood tend to share a resemblance (like Nami and Bell-mère). These two characters don't share a strong resemblance or general style like others do.
The Shichibukai in General
The story of One Piece is one of piracy. Clashing with other pirates over the title of 'pirate king' was always planned- but who those pirates would be has shifted. Originally the plan was for the 4 Emperors - the 'Yonko' - to be the primary villains. This is particularly clear from the base plot - Luffy leaving to become Pirate King would make these 4 excellent 'final bosses.'
But Oda added in the Shichibukai - the 7 Warlords of the Sea - who were pirates siding with the government. In the 23rd Collection, he noted that they became central to the story purely because he thought they looked cool!
Supernovas Making it to the New World
The 'Supernovas' are also known as the 'Worst Generation.' These 9 characters are the young upstart pirates who have earned a special reputation due to their large bounties and direct actions against the World Government.
Trafalgar Law Becoming a Central Character
One of the most important 'Supernovas' is Trafalgar Law.
Weekly serialization is a wonderland."
The Series Lasting
Originally, Oda hadn't planned for the series to last past the early '00s.

Portgaz D. Onut definitely had passion 😅
Katakuri has a strong feeling to eat ace, he doesn't know why but he just feels like he wants to
Your unique take on story telling about fictional pirates just has a way to make a bad day good
One big mistake you made is saying there wouldn't be a paramount war.
Yamato's salute at the end hurts my arm.
"Jinbei and Smoothie would be a very solid match."
Are you shure it wouldn't be a very liquid match?
These what if stories are amazing and i love your artists drawing of Smoothie holding her sword with those cute eyes.
What timing. I just watched the Katakuri donut scene last night. lol
Bro the thumbnail though😂
In the end, the only "safe path" was the main timeline path as it gave Ace a bit more of a boost-if not a slight one-in his skills/abilities because with the Big Mom or Kaido paths he was going in a bit underpowered. The only difference is those paths unlike the main timeline path is he had one thing it didn't:him not being a donut
Those 2 other paths hurt Doughnut 🍩
I love your humour, especially the way you bring up silly details like hats and shanks’s crotch
Ace really pulls in his flash backs
Yamato and that marine girl both got rizzed up by the fire boy
I mean, most of these are fairly sad. But I can see a situation where one of these events becomes Ace's Sabaody moment. The Spade Pirates come back stronger than ever and maybe, just maybe Ace can actually go all the way up to King. No, I don't think Ace gets to any Yonko unless he gets the premium version of Luffy's training. The premium version has Ace learning not just basic Haki, but advanced as well. Who will mentor Ace, no idea.
Maybe Shanx would be a good mentor for em 🤷🏾♂️
Probably Shanks in alternate timeline where Ace gets drunk and spills the beans that Roger was his father.
5:23 All four of these guys being on screen at the same time makes me want to play with some cards for some reason.
3:59 Kidd didn’t listen to luffy and died 😂
The lesson: don’t mess with the yonko unless you are luffy, law, kid, or sakasuki
imagine how fucked it would be if luffy saw a campfire homie that sounded exactly like his dead brother
Dude just never run out of ideas to roast Ace ... Poor guy. 😂
You forgot about the Marine path in which Ace becomes a marine at Garp’s wishes. Only to be discovered by Sakazuki to be Roger’s son and turned into a donut as punishment
3:50 maybe it’s a prosthetic arm to protect the stump in the cold weather?
Still weird to add it don't you think? Considering he doesn't really care much for it otherwise and why do a whole fake arm when you can just tie it up
Liam your hair is on point in this video! Can you please do a video on how you style your hair?
That thumbnail is downright devious
good day when grandline uploads :D
Video 287 24 months
I love the videos and I hope your day was great. Keep up the great work.
if ace lived longer he would've made a change of the story.
Ace, a man who was born to die. Same can be said for some Bucaneer who's flackback is going on and will continue beyond 1100 🤧
That was Thee Best Merch Plug ever, fuck it, You jist Sold a Shirt Sir!!
The thumbnail 💀💀. He forgot the donut maker (Akainu) 😞
And if you've read Ace Novel, you'll suspect that Masked Deuce is the Man Marked by Flames.
Everyone is the man marked by flames
@@conormurphy4328 Lol true
12:56 “bring fire to those homies” so they say
Ace may need no introduction, but he defiantly needs an eulogy.
I like how 50% of the emperor paths end with him being a donut.
I just love these alternate history videos
This thumbnail was the best one so far!!
Thank you for posting right this second I needed a video to watch🤙
thanks for making this, i really wanted to know more about ace
😁
If the spade pirates landed the wheel on 1000 years they'd each have to pay 50, not 20
I can't believe Katakuri was responsible for Ace's body never being found...
Dude that looks like a donut getting cheeks clapped by the guy who loves donuts would’ve been amazing to see
Crotch goblin shanks 😭
Masked Deuce looks like the magical rock musician from Chrono Cross.
Who ever the charming artist was that drew Yamato doing odens dance. Thank you. Didn’t know I needed that.
Aces' dream was to capture the hearts of the one-piece community
We need this same video except Ace joins each emperor instead of challenging them
It just occurred to me how convenient Luffy’s experiences against Big Mom and Kaido were.
Hey can you do a video explaining black leg style I have found no video that just explains the martial I would love to learn more about it Sanji is my favorite character in one piece and I would love to learn about his martial art style
Just passed my forklift test I'm forklift certified gentleman
Remember a theory that Bonney was carrying Ace's child...
5:47 wawawait, who's "Brian" supposed to be here? 🤣
If Ace never joins the Whitebeard Pirates, then Blackbeard would probably have captured Luffy some time after Enies Lobby, I think.
I thought he wanted to catch him at W7, where Garp also was. That ain't happening.
This is why I hope there's a filler in one piece soon where they animate Aces novels via by having it told to Luffy from former members of the Spade Pirates maybe even the Marine that was chasing him Isuka.
Completely Unrelated: The man marked by flame is scopper, the black ship is the Oro Jackson, and what’s causing the whirlpools is whatever hatched out of the egg.
OR
It’s another Lunarian which would tie into luffy being Nikka. He would search for luffy after seeing his wanted poster which would explain why the Gorosei didn’t want that photo being published. Meaning there are possibly more lunarians besides King in hiding.
Liam you’re the only man I’ll ever look in the eyes while washing dishes.
How did you know i was rewatching impel down / marienford arc rn 😭
Bro katakuri sure does love his donuts... He tried to make Luffy a donut too with his trident😅.
If he joined kaidos crew, they would have a Jack, Queen, King, and an Ace
"theres also mihar, he has a nice hat and wants to be an educator
and next to him we have saber, he also has a nice hat but does not want to be an educator"
this is why i watch grandlinereview
Oda here foreshadowing ace's death from the get go Portigas. Donut. Ace
Your artist is awesome
I know there are uncountable ifs and when scenarios, but wouldn't the absence of ace mean that blackbeard would go after luffy instead? Meaning the paramount war could still happen, but with luffy on the chopping block instead of ace.
I just found this channel recently and excuse My langiage although its well deserved. I Fuckin Love his realistic and comical perspective in these vids!
I'm thrilled that you're enjoying it :D
I'm in Germany and I started sweating profusely when you told me to salute
Keep up the awesome work and videos Liam love the video
based on how well ace did against whitebeard in the ace manga, him having a chance against katakuri isnt imposible
Yeah. Ace pure destructive power is crazy
1:35 Except that one time he came to thank Shanks for rescuing Luffy.
Kaido being a ponegliph made me burst out in laughter
12:51 when the math ain’t mathing
Marineford reversal when Blackbeard continues with his original plan, capturing Luffy and luring Kaido to the Paramount War. Now Blackbeard is a shadow dragon
Has anyone talked about kaidos possible death and how that means there can be two good dragons in Wano?
God GLR beat me to it. Was about to type a comment referring to the Ace v Kaido section that "Ace could probably beat Jack considering Jack never won a fight." Then the video said the exact same thing as I was typing it...
Love these alternate fictional reality videos.
