The History of Clay Millican

  • Getting to drive NHRA Top Fuel dragsters as a career seems like a dream, but for Clay Millican it is a reality! He worked hard to make it to the top, with commitment at every level.
These nitro machines accelerate to insane speeds and require lightning fast reaction times, but most of the work occurs behind the scenes, where Clay seeks out the resources to get the Parts Plus team to the track! There are a lot of high net worth individuals in Top Fuel, but Clay has scrapped to get where he is.

Clay is the most humble, sincere and experienced driver. His whole team puts their all in every race. Being a small independent team, they are truly amazing having the success they have. Thanks for this interview!!

Clay Millican is a class act! He has never changed from the small town guy he was when he was growing up in Drummonds, TN in spite of his fame. He has never forgotten where he came from because he still lives there!

Don Garlits talks about the "Factory Team" mentality of "drive it to destruction". He was always on a tight budget too. Capco should definitely be on that "factory team" list. When you understand this it makes Clay's 6 World Championships really stand out.

To be honest I don’t think there were any “factory” teams in the IHRA where Clay won his championships. I really wish there was still an organization like the IHRA where small nitro teams could run and compete. I know the IHRA still exists but not for fuel racers.

Well I come from the other side of the pond, started spectating @ drag racing in '73,was blown away. I always wanted to race, but never had the where with all to make it happen. I waited 46yrs to finally make a run @ Santa Pod raceway here in the UK. Sadly not @ the wheel, but in the passenger seat of Santa Pod's 2-seater dragster in 2019 I did that run, time 7.828secs & 171.77mph & I was 66yrs old by then. My mate who came with me to take pics, said I was smiling from ear to ear when I finished the run.
Well now 69yrs old & in September going to do it again. Probably the last time,it costs £500($660),& when you're living on a pension it's to much. But I paid for this years run before I retired in March this year.

In 2005 i was the guy who rode the elevator with you and your wife at Covington Kentucky I still have that hat and have not worn it since the day you autographed it. Wish you the best and be safe God bless you

I had a long conversation with Joe Morrison a few weeks ago, and he pretty much said the exact same things that Clay is saying here about being a small independent team. From being the sales and PR guy that procures sponsors, to the tight knit crew, to the kill switch to save money on parts, it was the same. Joe was even a very nice and personable guy just like Clay seems to be in this interview.

Clay is a man that looks like he’s thanking God every moment of his life for his life.
I met him once at Maryland Raceway with Dom Lagana. Super-nice man, and I’ll stop what I’m doing to see him again.
May God continue blessing you, sir.
