The British broadcasting ban on spoken statements from representatives/supporters of 11 Northern Irish organisations (both political and military, from unionist and republican groups), most prominently on Sinn Fein and its president Gerry Adams lasted from 1988 to 1994. During this time it was absolutely normal to watch TV news with a dubbed Gerry Adams... it seems utterly surreal now, and like Gerry said in the later interview (last part of this video) it was absurd.
Stephen Rea was approached by Channel 4 journalist Mary Holland to provide the voiceover for Gerry Adam, according to Stephen Rea she was the brave one, he was just a hired hand.
Rea dubbed Adams’ voice so perfectly that it was, apparently an improvement (Gerry has a stronger Northern Irish accent than Stephen Rea); so much so that the ban had the opposite effect of what was intended, it made Gerry Adams sound more professional, reasonable and likeable. 😜
It must be noted that the Republic of Ireland similarly banned broadcasts of Sinn Fein, IRA and other organisations, from 1969 til 1994.
