Well Phil I grew up in Baltimore during this time period. It's true; blacks owned all the business here (ie Pennsylvania Ave). I remember going to Gwynn Oak Park (the only one we could go to) and shopping at certain stores downtown. Buses were newly integrated. I knew people that owned beauty shops . I remember hearing about Carr's. Beach as a child only because you couldn't go to Ocean City unless you worked there. Maybe one of the reasons this place and others like this disappeared was because no one was groomed to take it over. After so many generations, that next one didn't have the same desires to keep things afloat . I agree with you Phil ; that Green Book would be very helpful now. Thanks for keeping us woke.

Assimilation was the worst thing that happened to us. Keep up the good work Phil. We need a Uk Phil.
I’m glad that I am not the only one to think 💭 🤔 like that. My father’s family had a green book from North Carolina. I think 🤔 I might look 👀 into that myself.
Knowing history means knowing the how and the why. I grew up in that era and many people are unable to see the entire picture of what happened and most importantly why things happened the way they did. Hindsight is 20/20. When the movement(s) were happening, another class was looking at how to counter those movements. My generation and those that followed never had a strategy on how to counter the counter moves. It takes a book to explain it all.
American Beach outside Jacksonville,FL was like that too. Black people had beautiful homes in that community, some still do, but others are truly taking it away. This was created because black folk could not go to Jacksonville Beach.

Coming from New England to DC in the early 80s(!) I was absolutely shocked when I found out that blacks could not or dared not go Ocean City, MD beaches! White friends that I worked would talk about going to OC on summer weekends. Black friends, on the other hand, would invite me to the beach in a place called Sandy Point not far from Annapolis. It was an all black beach. I'd never seen such a thing before. It wasn't until the later 80s that blacks started going to OC fairly regularly. Eventually, blacks stopped going to Sandy Point altogether. Nevertheless, although I've been to OC a few times over the years, I never liked that place at all, and felt I had missed out on nothing when it was still segregated.

Remember this your enemy will always relegate us to whatever we are willing to accept, so I said that in hopes of helping our people to understand that we are never obligated to accept only what the enemy wants us to settle for. We are the most intelligent people on the face of the earth believe that and accept that as fact, we have allowed other people that never did or will have our best interest at heart and want to think for us.
