Malo Yachts are very well known in Europe as ocean going sailing yachts. I know former owners of HRs that moved on to Malo. Apparently, they are built even stronger and over-sized than HRs. Excellent, safe, and beatiful boats!

  • @dec0075

    Fun fact:
Malö is built in Kungsviken (The King's Bay) on the island of Orust in Sweden. According to the legend the viking king Olav Tryggvason's ship "Ormen Långe" (The Long Serpent) was built here in the 900's, more than 1000 years ago. From the 1200's there are contemporary written records of this boat yard, and the construction of the Norwegian king Håkon Håkonsson's warship.
This is also the place where the boats of Harry Hallberg were built in the 1900's. When Hallberg moved to a bigger yard, the Kungsviken yard was taken over by Christoph Rassy. After Hallbergs retirement in the early 1970's, Christoph Rassy bought Hallbergs yard and merged it to become Hallberg-Rassy. Since the move of the Rassy yard, Malö has been the predominant boat being built in Kungsviken.

Absolutely stunning as the entire Scandinavian, Baltic and North Sea built boats (disclosure, like my Dutch Contest…). A lot of common design features and concepts, bet materials and fittings. Malo also sails relatively fast, in spite of the (lighter) medium displacement - all due to the superb design based on generations of boat builders that are all still in flourishing business.

I've heard of them but they sure seem to be uncommon in the states. Very nice boat. Id prefer a full skeg to protect the rudder and a bridge deck to prevent water ingress to the cabin in the event of a flooded cockpit. Its unfortunate that the side decks are so narrow and then cluttered by the shrouds. Finally,, too much teak covering the decks.. I'd prefer none. Otherwise, perfect. 😃 That is all.

Considering the class and reputation of these boats, I'm surprised at the deck-stepped mast. One school of thought says that if you lose a rig then a deck-stepped mast make it easier to clear the debris overboard. Personally, I'd go for a keel-stepped mast being less likely to be lost in the first place, plus it would lend itself to being jury rigged.

The headline should read "The best Boat AMERICANS likely never heard of". As with (just about) everything else the American public is quite closed minded and not really interested to know or learn about "foreign" stuff. After living here for more than 30 years I am still astonished by the discrepancy between the wide held perception of the US as a dynamic and progressive nation when in fact it is extremely rigid and hostile to new ideas.
Exceptions are few and far between, with regards to sailing these are reduced to "knowledge" about the European cheap charter buckets a la Beneteau or Bavaria and as far as real boats are concerned perhaps Hallberg-Rassy but how about Faurby, Comfortina, Sirius, Nordship, Luffe, RM Fora, Wauquiez, Elan to name a few.
I sure appreciate your attempt to bring some light into this mantle of ignorance and I would suggest to do more of it, perhaps researching some of the brands I mentioned above.

I prefer sleek classic lines. The lines of this boat leave a lot to be desired. The slant of the stern is ugly. If there was a tiller instead of that huge wheel (or even a smaller wheel) there would be room for the seating to come all the way back with no interruption. THEN you'd have a nice sized cockpit.
