So being a 24 Megapixel Camera dedicated to Sports it’s not the Master of Everything like promised such as the Nikon Z9 and Sony a1 sadly. If it had 36 Megapixels or more then I feel it would have fulfilled that title the Master of everything which making me now turn my attention to the Canon R5 Mark II as the possible Master of Everything for all my personal needs being Wildlife, Portrait and Event Photographer who wants that ability to capture more of the seen and crop in later as not to miss the action by trying to get the right composition in camera when the action is taking place. 🙏 For Sports and action photography I think the R1 will be best paired with a Zoom lens like the Canon RF 100-300mm f2.8 and the Canon RF 200-500mm F4 when it comes out. It be nice if that has a built in TC also with the switch on the right side this time like Nikon. 😁 Thanks Simon for all your hard work and getting up early and staying up late to keep us up to date and informed 😊

Canon may be hiding a trick in its sleeve. A quad pixel focusing sensor means there are 4 sub-pixels within each pixel. Each sub-pixel sees thing differently. With R1's enormous processing power and AI capability, I won't too surprised that it may be able to generate 48 or 96 MP image - either in camera or off camera using post processing software. BTW it higher dynamic range capability is probably another usage of these sub-pixels

As a sony A1 user i feel the R5II will a camera too watch sounds like a much nicer camera for most people and also a very important camera for canon. I also doubt it will get all the new AF stuff from the R1 and i feel if we have to guess and if it gets a stacked sensor it will probably still run slower than what sony can do but the readout speed will be 5ms or 6ms which will make for a great camera since canon 'allows' more rolling-shutter than sony does (which i think is a good idea). On paper the R5II looks very impressive to me... i am in the sony eco-system mostly and will get the A1M2 but i have to pay for that dearly and the R5II looks like much better value (for the body, not eco system/switch).

Canon elite's camera were always with lower megapixel than 5d or 6d series for example.. You either accept it or choose something else. In terms of development and features the 1 series are packed with the most advance technologies required by professional sports photograoher feedbacks, and it was always like that. The 1 series are built with these people in mind cause these are the people who want these features and will most likely buy it. These guys needs a tank camera that is built for war and all weather conditions possible while having no compromise in speed and quality for them. The very few people who have the finance and wants to buy the 1 series like you likely wanted to do so are only the 1% who wants it with higher megapixel 😂

      @KevinNordstrom 4 месяца назад +3

@christophercarlimages9003 I agree. You're not wrong. I'm saying canon won't deliver for bird photographers in the R1. We are not who they are targeting for this camera. That's all I'm saying, so we have two choices. Go with the r5mk2 or switch to the flagships that are a master of everything. Unfortunately, the r1 isn't for bird photographers but pro event, sports, and photo journalists, and for the photographers that think wildlife don't need more than 24mp, then they clearly have only shot big mamals, or at their local zoo, or local parks where wildlife is used to people around, they haven't attempted far in the back country in the middle of nowhere, miles from humans where cropping is essential for birds and getting close to wildlife is a moral issue. Not a "just get closer and get better at your craft" issue. We know this.
I've been using 24mp the last 5 years and it's simply not enough. The photos degrade and fall apart rather quickly in post cropping at 24mp. I'm not sure where I'm going next. Wait for the r7mk2, get The r5mk2 or go with a z9/A1.
Every pro wildlife photographer and every hobbiest wildlife photographer i know who has deep pockets, are shooting high resolution cameras for good reason. They arent going back to 24mp. They just aren't. Likewise they arent going back to 5 fps. Cropping is essential to retain detail. Not just for landscape but wildlife such as birds. Trust me I'm with you, I want the r1 body and its weather sealing ruggedness, the battery etc, for wildlife and the rough conditions we face in the field and everything you mentioned. Especially for small birds. but let's be honest.....it won't happen. At least its not looking like it. The R1 will be a niche camera.

I’ve used the R3, R5, R6 and have never been let down by low light performance in near dark conditions for wildlife. Yet all I hear is excuses for low megapixels because it’s better low light performance. How many low MP sports/fast action cameras does canon need? Also where will the future R3 slot in price justification at 5999 if the R1 comes in at 6499? Nobody would ever buy the future R3 for 500 dollars less unless it offers something drastically different.

My guess the A1M2 (and so also kind of the Z8/Z9) will not change sensor its now used at 30fps but the sensor itself can run at 44fps. The A1 now is hold back by the parts inside the camera not the sensor. If sony does its normal thing we will get all the new hardware from the A9III and A7R5 (lcd, body, AI chip, EVF fix) the same sensor but given its age i suspect a new upgraded cpu pair and MAYBE gen4 cards. This would really mean just one new module (the cpu's) and bringing parts from other cameras but the A1M2 will be running at 40fps/14bit craw. It sounds like canon can't really match the sensor tech sony has and will instead focus on AF (makes sense to me) and could jump over sony (like in the old days) with AF and tracking but we have no idea if sony has prepped for this and there is more 'hidden' inside that AI chip from sony to be unlocked.

Remember when the R7 came out and promised "autofocus" like the R3? Wasn't even close. This AI autofocus is merely an unproven feature that no one knows how it will work. The R5 (which many people say is what Canon users should use for birds) has a hard time focusing on birds that have any distracting elements near it. It's supposed to have this great eye focus that half the time can't tell the difference between the eye and a twig. So I would take their claims of autofocus with a grain of salt. In either case, I'm sure the autofocus in the R1 will be light years ahead of the R5 MK2. That is almost a guarantee!

Although the Canon EOS R3 has fewer megapixels than the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the Canon camera will generally deliver higher quality images. Here are some key reasons for this:
      Sensor Size:
Canon EOS R3 has a full-frame sensor (35mm), which is significantly larger than the sensor in the iPhone 13 Pro Max. A larger sensor can capture more light and details, resulting in better image quality, especially in low-light conditions.
      Pixel Size:
The pixels on the Canon EOS R3 sensor are larger than those on the iPhone sensor. Larger pixels can capture more light, resulting in less noise and better details in the images.
      Lens Quality:
Canon EOS R3 uses interchangeable high-quality lenses that can be tailored to different photography situations. These lenses usually have better optics than those integrated into the iPhone.
      Image Processing:
Canon EOS R3 has a more powerful image processor and more advanced image processing software than the iPhone. This allows the camera to handle noise reduction, dynamic range, and color reproduction more effectively.
      Dynamic Range:
Canon EOS R3 has a greater dynamic range, meaning it can capture more details in both highlight and shadow areas in the same image.
      Focus and Shutter:
Canon EOS R3 has advanced autofocus systems and high-speed shutters that provide better control over focusing and exposure. This is especially important in situations with a lot of movement or in low light.
      Photographic Technology and Controls:
Canon EOS R3 offers more manual controls and advanced features for professional photography. This gives the photographer more creative freedom and control over the image-taking process.
      Use of RAW Format:
Canon EOS R3 allows shooting in RAW format, which stores more information and provides greater flexibility in post-processing. Although iPhone also supports RAW, files from the Canon camera are often more detailed and yield better results after editing.
While the iPhone 13 Pro Max has an impressive camera for a smartphone, it cannot compete with the professional features and superior hardware of a full-frame system camera like the Canon EOS R3. Therefore, the Canon EOS R3 will deliver higher quality images with more details, even with fewer megapixels.

@@mytrollchildren6715 , I have owned the R3 and shot with it extensively. The features are very cool. The AF is amazing. But the output was extremely disappointing. I felt I wasted an entire spring migration season on it. The features of a camera don't matter if the output isn't up to standards. Times have changed. Technology has progressed. In 2024, shooting birds, wildlife, and aviation, 24MP just can't cut it. People expect more these days. They expect DETAIL -- iris detail, feather detail, skin texture. Even the R7 (with enough light) produces better, more detailed images than the R3. I loved the R3 AF, features, and ergonomics. I loved using it. @@scb2scb2 I think it really depends on your needs for a camera with high resolution. I typically make photobooks with my wildlife photography and my maximum print size is typically a page which is 8x10. For an 8x10 print one only needs 7.2 MP for 300 dpi quality. There are definitely needs for higher resolution sensor for when one needs to crop heavily or make extremely large prints. Currently I use a Nikon Z9 and Canon R3 for cameras with lenses for both systems.

But admittedly . . . if you're doing portraits of senior citizens in a nursing home . . . 24MP is MORE than enough! Let's hope the R5ii is a bigger upgrade over the R5 than the R1 is over the R3.

First the iphone is a 12mp sensor with a quad bayer arrangement which makes it "48mp". With samsungs sensors (and i would assume iphone's sony sensors) this allows for quad pixel autofocus. That would be similar to calling this 24mp R1 a 96mp sensor. Also, if you take your brand new iphone 15 pro max and take a photo out the box, 24mp file. Isn't that crazy. Maybe it is enough.

I think you guys missed my point. I'm not saying an iPhone has a BETTER camera. I'm just saying that technology and expectations have moved forward since the 1Dx was introduced. Anyone can readily see the difference between a 24MP image and a 45MP image (even though they may not know why) and, by today's standards, all other things being equal, the 45MP image almost always wins. The Sony and Nikon (and other manufacturers) flagship cameras reflect that reality.

Should wildlife and bird photographers accept rolling shutter, second tier autofocus, weak battery that inhibits mechanical frame rates and doesn't push big primes as quickly, most likely smaller bit rate than the R1, and a body that is an egg in comparison to the R1. If those limitations are OK with you, then buy the R5 MK2. Some of us prefer better.

A higher megapixel count is not always a good thing. When discussing megapixel count, people often forget the pixel density, which is also an important variable. As pixel density increases, the shutter speed required to avoid camera shake/motion blur increases. This may not be an issue for stationary subjects, but for this kind of photography/for moving subjects, it is crucial. Canon should not be criticized for this, but respected for not following the market trend.

Well said. For most of my life I either shot on film or shot less than 24 MP and seemed to manage, but where things fell apart was low light. It costs a lot of play well in low light and the R1 is very much a low light tool.
