Thanks for your post. In the early to mid-1960s I carried a US Navy 1911A1 pistol while on watch in the western Pacific

It's probably the most beautiful 1911 in existence today

I know the pistol is old but it’s the same design I have by Tisas and it shoots the same round and uses the same magazines that cost me $500 dollars. Age in of itself makes anything valuable to the owner. If I had that pistol I would shoot it because that’s what it was made to do. My Tisas 1911 looks just like it and shoot everything I shoot in it.

Really enjoying the channel! Also thanks for your contributions to Larry's and Ian's books. Can't wait till Pistols of The Warlords comes out. Was wondering on M1911s, when did manufacturers change the forward slide cut profiles from whats seen on earlier pistols like this one, to a more gradual curve like we see today? Anyways, please keep up the great work!

Colt changed the profile of the forward slide cut in spring of 1918. Thanks for the view and comment!

How can you tell if the grips are original on one made in the first 5000 serial numbers?

Awesome Colt being a Navy Veteran and Colt guy is it for sale!!??
In my opinion the letter is well worth it as it gives the gun provence as to it's history. And in a nice frame with a gun in a case!!

This was a very useful video, thank you! I myself own a Colt 1911, Model of of 1911 U.S. Army which has been inspected by the same inspector and same initials. The patented are different than yours, Patented date are as follow Apr. 20, 1897. Sept. 9, 1902. Dec. 19, 1905. Feb. 14, 1911. Aug. 19, 1913. The Colt Logo is just between those dates and the Colt’s PT. F.A. MFG. Co Hartford, CT. U.S.A marks. If I’m not wrong, according to the serial number 9476, it was manufactured in 1913. I also have it’s original holster and I am still using it in the shooting range. It’s in perfect condition. What would be the value should I decide to sell it? For the story, This colt comes from my grand father who was an officer in the Belgian Army during WWII, he met an American officer after the battle of the bulge, the 2 apparently became friends and at the end the war exchanged their pistols. I think my grand father had a Belgian 9mm GP from FN. Thank you.

I own an all original 1918 “Black Army”, just like everyone else and their brother has, lol. It’s in awesome shape and of course the finish didn’t last and but has a nice patina. This Navy is beautiful! I had a chance to grab a 1912 piece (not a Navy of course). It was all correct. But someone in its lifetime polished the snot out of it. All the roll marks survived but dang all the edges were butter smooth, not good.

There’s something magical about thinking of getting zapped back in time a century, and life would be so shockingly different in every way, but you could still pick up a colt and be perfectly capable of defending yourself with style. The 1911 even struck fear into cthulhu cultists in the roaring twenties.

I KNOW!!! To think over 100 years ago they had a nice shooting, portable, powerful way to defend themselves. I saw a video of NYC in 1911 and I can’t believe those guys had pistols like that.

i got supper lucky wen i found my 1942 army 1911a1. the price tag said refinished colt a1 300$ well i had my cash out within seconds! it had ben re finished and the sights wer upgraded and the internals wer all polished and the barrel is a militarily parts number nm barrel and bushing dating to the early 50s had ben fitted. the slide had ben hard fitted along with the bushing. it came with a pinned base plate 2tone mag and a keyhole type. witch in value alone exceed the price of the pistol! and since i was not a collector of early mags i listed them on ebay and let the bidders decide what they wer worth. i got 230$ for the pinned base mag and another 100$ for the keyhole mag because it had a small crack at the rear. so it covered the pistol plus i made a lil profit on top! well i needed some newer mags for shooting so i bid on a lot of 34 1911 mags and won the whole lot for 63$. wen i got the lot half the mags wer newer mill contract mags but the other half was all ww1 ww2 era mags that i again sold off. i kept the newer ones and gave few to a friend..i got lucky!

bee-u tee -full Navy version of a colt!! I have a 1911 "born" on April/may of 1915 at the Springfield Armory. all parts with the exception of the barrel are original based on patina and when it came into my family, hasn't been refurbished. the recoil spring over the years, has lost it's "punch" so I have retired it to the safe.i am a historian by profession (taught it for 35 years) my great ,great grandfather fought in the civil war(the south),my grandfather was in ww1(gassed in France in late October 1918 ,my dad was in ww2 (navy via the coast guard),I was in the usmc (combat grunt Vietnam). I love to shoot ,i love reading and studying american history ,especially 20th century wars .I have just about worn the covers off of my copy of The Model 1911 and The Model 1911A1 Military and Commercial Pistols by Joe Poyer edited by Craig Riesch ...3rd edition. the weapon and it's evolution is great, but the context information and what went into the development in this case the 1911 pistol is REALLY SUPER!!! I Have a Glock,a CZ 75 which is a clone of mr. brownings earlier works) and a sig M11A1. and thats it. I love the all steel pistols. the "plastic" pistols are ok. Gaston Glock( who just passed away very recently) was the John Browing of his era.but mr brown is in a class way beyond Glock. I look forward to another of your you tube presentations.

Speaking of a factory letter. Mauro Baudino does all my Mausers, he is the Curator for Mauser and has written a couple of awesome books! But anyway he charges 50 Euros, it was like 60 bucks when I sent it over. On my most current acquisition, he didn’t just give when it was born, and all the typical Colt stuff, don’t get me wrong I still letter my Colts. But he had 5 pages of information in this Certificate he put in some serious time and energy. A lot cheaper with a lot more information. Colt actually should be ashamed for what they charge! They are covered up in business and still want to charge 100-200$ for something that probably takes them all of 15 minutes to research now. I would imagine someone spent time over the years putting all this info in a data base. Maybe we are still paying for all that work?

A friend of mine, a doctoral candidate in Ohio would bring this out and wave it around late into a house party. He showed me one time how to disarm it. I had a very friendly talk with him and he let me pull the clip. I pulled the slide and another round jumped out. A hand appeared over my shoulders and handed me the the extra bullet. All was well and we continued our frivolities. I will tell you later about the time some A hole was shooting yellow pages in a after hours at a bar with his Deseret Eagle. 44.
