1998/1999 Premier League
I’m a Liverpool fan, but find myself watching these games because the class is just astounding.
😜 Respect amigo ✋🏼 I grew up watching Liverpool when had Rush,Dalglish,Aldridge etc ..They were machinery man ..
Proper passionate football back then.
Kanu great skills and one of Nigeria most prolific footballer what a legend
Only put up two years ago? I was there as a Boro season ticket holder for that game. Arsenal played us off the park, and the Boro fans applauded Arsenal as they left the pitch, appreciating the quality of the football they played that day. Masterclass in football. Deserved victory and scoreline.
Kanu what a legend...talented and gave his best to the club...and what a match! Anelka, Vieira, and co, awesome team
What a side This was. High pressing. Solid defence. Overmars and anelkas pace the enigma that was kanu. Just brilliant.
Anelka was key with 5 goals... Amazing performance. Thanks for this video!
It's unbelievable at what level he was when only 19-20.
@@siberianTiger639 If only he stayed long, he would be our top goalscorer...
What a player Vieira was, am amazed how good he was in his prime. I knew he was good but not this good. He bossed this game!!!
@raycorey
He still cost the team silverware this season i.e FAcup passing to Giggs and the next season he was bad in Europe, first in Champions league made bad mistake vs Barca which relegated them to UEFAcup where they reached the final and he misses in the shootout losing to Galatasaray. After 1997/98 where Vieira & Arsenal cashed in on RoyKeane's season long injury & 2 lucky wins vs ManUtd, they won nothing for 3 straight seasons.
Arsenal were always eliminated in the champions league in either the group stage, last 16 or quarter-finals was the furthest they ever got at least until Vieira left, he played in 7 Champions league seasons with Arsenal.
Vieira never even played in a champions league semi-final his entire career at any club.
@@cddb5408 Blame Bergkamp for the FA cup. Missed the 90th minute penalty. If Abramovich hasn’t bought Chelsea we’d have won that champions league. He did win a European championship and World Cup though. He should have a statue like Henry, Bergkamp and Adams
Ezca We zazen, #0
We haven't been able to replace him and Adams which is why we haven't won any titles in 19 years
6:54 "... and the best defence in the country and many would say in European club football..." man, it's so nice to hear that. What a team that was at that time, solid as a rock defensively, tough midfield, sharp as a razor up front with bergkamp, overmars and anelka. People forget how close that team was to the double that season, that would make it two seasons in a row. Arguably the best arsenal team ever.
Overexaggerated.
Arsenal were lucky to win the league in 97/98 by half a point. They should've lost the 98/99 season by more points than they did...." sharp as a razor up front" yet despite these 6 goals in 1 game, still only finished the season with 59 goals lol...and who's to say Newcastle would've allowed Arsenal to beat them in a 2nd consecutive FAcup final as well. Arsenal were 2 wins away from the FAcup, it wasn't like you had 1 hand on the trophy that year. Besides, despite your overhype of Arsenal you still showed the difference between them and ManUtd, Arsenal were "close to the double" while ManUtd ACTUALLY WON the TREBLE!!!
That's another thing, Arsenal were terrible in Europe both 97/98 & 98/99 the 2 seasons you're hyping them up so much, they were also awful in Europe for many years after that.
@@cddb5408 what is "half a piont" ffs? Are we still talking about football here?! They won it by a POINT, there's no such thing as HALF A POINT in football for your information, that exists in basketball. Just as they lost it by a point next year, why aren't you saying how lucky Man United were there? And they obviously lost so close in the semi final of the FA cup, if Bergkamp only converted that penalty they'd probably won it.
@@siberianTiger639 All I ever here is Bergkamp penalty Bergkamp penalty Bergkamp penalty....no one talks about Yorke's missed pen vs Arsenal in a PL game that season where ManUtd were the better team and it effected 3 points in the title race, the title would've been much more comfortable for ManUtd but they still won by at least 1 point. You can't compare the manner ManUtd won 98/99 to how Arsenal scraped it in 97/98, scoring less &conceding more than ManUtd but winning because of 2 lucky head-to-head wins vs ManUtd. 3-2 at Highbury controversial ManUtd should've had penalty at 2-2, the OldTrafford game ManUtd had b-team players and RoyKeane missed the whole season through injury, was any big Arsenal player missing for all of 98/99 which massively effected their season? I don't think so.
You may as well say "we were only ManUtd not having ever heard of Schmeichel away from getting to the 1999 FAcup final".
Not to mention Bergkamp's goal in the FAcup semi-final replay was fortuitous where as both ManUtd goals were brilliant and it shouldn't have even gone to a replay RoyKeane scored a perfectly valid goal in the first game which finished 0-0 really bad offside decision.
It's quite obvious what I mean by half a point. ManUtd had 12 GD better than Arsenal in 97/98 so if ManUtd had 1 point more they'd win it. Just like in a champions league knockout tie when you draw 0-0 away 1st leg and are winning 1-0 at home 2nd leg they say you're only half a goal in the lead because if it finishes 1-1, it won't go to extra time or beyond, you'll lose the tie.
Was that explanation really necessary?
I've heard a lot of people say this is the best Arsenal team even over the invincible side. I wasn't watching football then so haven't seen enough week in week out so be able to say. Hard to imagine this team was better offensively than the invincibles (I realise they scored 6 in this game haha but I mean overall)
@@benmarston07 they absolutely weren't better offensively, they weren't scoring many goals usually... But they were much stronger defensively so it's hard to judge overall
This was the true Arsenal, covering man to man and so deadly in attacking at the same time. Sorry for my English. I'm a Gooner from Pakistan. Come on you COYG ❤️🇵🇰
Your english is fine, don't be sorry....as long as english is not your first language, it's fine
We love u keep supporting
They didn't win anything that season in 98/99 😂😂😂😂
Spot on Faz..when we got Adams & Bould who were always on top of headers..Dixon & Winterburn covering most grounds..the rest of the cast in their prime.🚀
Arsenal rightly applauded off the pitch by the entire crowd after that epic display. I was there, and it wasn't that we played bad, just that Arsenal proved they were a cut above.
Didn't the 'boro fans sing "Can you come back every week?" after that game?
Виера - монстр! Да и вся команда, тогда мне было лет 15-16, и именно за этот Арсенал я начал болеть, и полюбил эту команду.
When Arsenal meant something,it's so depressing following them now!
One of the earliest games I remember being at. Suppose it heavily sticks out because of the score. Bad defeat. I remember we were 5 or 6 nil down and Arsenal had a goal kick, a fan came onto the pitch and belted the ball into the net. I remember thinking "well, at least the ball has gone into their goal... Eventually"
So happy . Because watching , History Arsenal
Seaman was one of the best those years.
Kanu plays with opened heart operation. His private doctor had given him only 45 minutes.Optimism is my day.
Sjsjs and I don't whzmz to be a good morning for you HV no I kd.
Is this a fact?
@@samsondeenwalemuhammed5488 Very much a fact. Kanu does have a heart condition but he didn't let it stop him from doing what he loved.
Even though the current Man City side is terrifying I still think the Arsenal team of 1998 to 2001 was the most complete in premiership history. They had everything. speed, skill/flair, power, and size. All the flair/ambition/creativity of Bergkamp/Kanu etc the speed of Anelka/Overmars, the size/power of Vieira/Adams.
Who see that Man United player Howard Webb when the teams was walking out
Up king kanu, still watching 2020 .Up gunners
I wish keepers catched the ball today like Seaman did back in the day
He was the best man
Did Anelka actually smile after scoring goal number 6?
@7:20 Winterburn is still playing with his tore pant😅😅😅
That tackle could kill a player nowadays
JVC were once great too
Arsenal back 4 is like a fortress that is hard to crack
5th goal was so good they didn't even show it in real speed
Anelka would've been an Arsenal legend had he stayed.
Yeah, it was his brother (also his agent) that turned his head, he was the Money Grabber and spoiled what could have been a part of Arsenal Legendary History.
If Anelka had stayed at Arsenal then Wenger may have never bought Henry...think about that!
Although it turned out to work in the end because of Henry, Arsenal were absolutely mad to not to re-sign Anelka back in 2008 when he was at Bolton. He went on to do an amazing job at Chelsea and help deliver big trophies. Yet another one of Wenger's many mistakes post 2005.
@@PeaceDweller jgi p
@@PeaceDweller It was an admitted policy of Wenger not to resign players who forced there way out, the cheating wives, gave incentive to players to think twice before chancing the real superclubs. He broke it only for Henry who gave Wenger so much.
Tony Adams, Seaman, Petit, Patrick Vieira, Overmars..... Miss
Arsenal are still yet to recover from selling Vieira. The man was a titan in midfield.
He gave Giggs the ball.....and Arsenal won fuck all 👌
@@cddb5408
He's welsh, He's red, He's in his brothers' bed, Ryan Giggs, Ryan Giggs.
They were always quick on the counter. Goal number 4 17:20 remarkable it was three arsenal in front of goal against two defenders.
Wowwww what a gorgious team we had... chillzzzzzzz
How I wish I could go back to April 24 99
Fottball has changed. I know we're dominating, but so many balls given away. I love that we won by a margin, but man, if we were to give the ball away like that now we'd be so punished with the quality of the so called lesser team in the prem now!
Got to say, this was by no means an easy victory, Boro were really tough and deserved a few goals but Kanu was on another plane altogether that day.
Legendary pair Petit and Vieira
Seaman best keeper Arsenal have had since lukic. None better than seaman. Solid.
Credit given to Winter bid as well as Petit before Anelka and Kanu upfront.
How good was this game!! - Arsenal were exceptional without Bergkamp & Henry....... Vieira, Anelka & Parlour immense...... back 4 ROCK SOLID...Adams, Bould, Dixon, Winterbourne....BOOM

24:56 Vieira's trademark flick over and pass that lead to the pen. Captain invincible. Now where's his statue?

This is world class acedemy by arsene and pat rice
#12:32: 98% of modern goalkeepers will concede a goal. Seaman, respect.
They rarely used to put Kanu’s name on the TV cause it had wank it in lol. If you ever saw him doing an interview or whatever it would just say Kanu. 😂
😂😂
Europa League and 4th place is my target.
Those were the days.
Nicolas Anelka jugador ifrabalorado en el futbol 🔥✍🏽💢⚽️
Absolutely stupid games from Anelka and Vieira. World Class
Marc Overmars taking a PK? Interesting.....
Long live king Patrick
Arsenal defense is of traditional English style make up of French connection upfront.
When the epl was enjoyable to watch, unlike now a days how times have changed.
Look at the team sheet and the spine of that. Leadership and strength.
But still couldn't win anything for ages.
@@cddb5408 They had just won the double...
@@mnb9162 Because RoyKeane was injured all season and missed the 2 lucky Arsenal wins vs ManUtd which sneaked Arsenal the 1998 title but then ManUtd again won 4 of the next 5 seasons (for the 2nd time in the PL era, they've since done it a 3rd time 2006/07 to 2010/11). From 1998/99 to 2000/01 Arsenal won nothing.
@@cddb5408 They had just won the double....
@@mnb9162
They got lucky in 97/98 as previously mentioned but you have hindsight knowledge that Arsenal would be trophyless this 1998/99 season, again trophyless the season after where ManUtd won the PL by 18 points and again trophyless the season after that where ManUtd effectively won it with months to spare and beat Arsenal 6-1 at OldTrafford in the process.
Plus Arsenal hadn't "just" won it, this was close to a whole year later. They actually had "just" been eliminated in the FAcup99 by ManUtd where ManUtd basically beat Arsenal 3 times, first game RoyKeane goal bizarrely disallowed 0-0 went to a replay where ManUtd took the lead (another brilliant goal) and were cruising until a Bergkamp deflected lucky goal made it 1-1 and RoyKeane was sent off so ManUtd had to win all over again in extra time with 10men, which they did with an iconic goal.
Yes being 2nd best out of 20 teams is still quite good but Arsenal weren't ever the best team in the Premier league era until ManUtd had just won 7 out of 9 PL titles and should've been 6 out of the last 6 from 1995/96 to 2000/01 but it was still 5 out of the last 6 and then Arsenal lost that title defence straight away in 2003 despite 2 Thierry Henry offside goals in a winner takes all game vs ManUtd that season but it finished 2-2 (with 2 legitimate ManUtd goals).

Were the footballs heavier in those years? Or is it the grass that is causing the resistance to motion? Or were the players less fit? Sorry for the ignorance.
Yep they were heavier. Not coming out of the factory - but they absorbed moisture and were much heavier in practice. The pitch is also slower, since it is natural grass and not watered before each half. The boots, too, are heavier. It made it much harder to retain possession and avoid mistakes, but easier to play through balls, weighed passes and such.
Back then Middlesbrough were sometimes a bogey team for some.
and one of those teams being based in Manchester

now I understand why Mustoe hates AFC!!!
Arsenal always failed to lure world class player and wenger have an eye for talent and always train up from their own academy to turn them into world class players. Or snap up potential player in the market like Henry, ljunberg PRIES and even hleb, flamini, all bought for a reasonable price and transform into W. C
Arsenal threw away many championships and the early teams under Wenger underachieved big time,
Aaaarsenall!!!!
3:09 - Viera time - different level
