But the others were nowhere near the England quad then. It's funny how fans demand big-club players when they don't get picked. then demand form players from smaller clubs when big-club players get the nod. arsenal were a top team then. But apart from Adams, I don't think there was a case for another player to be included in the England squad. rocastle was brilliant, but perhaps he was already suffering from the condition that would take his life too soon. The most striking thing about this was the behaviour of George Graham. Pure class. He tried to keep the euphoria to a minimum - clearly conscious of the circumstances. Also, respect for his fellow Scot. Class act. Sure, fell foul of the money trap. but so what? Who didn't back then? Treated disgracefully and discarded like a rag doll. Graham was twice the manager Wenger was. Liverpool fans were pure class too. Not a boo to be heard. Tbf, Arsenal aren't a big LFC rival and the flowers gesture at the start was possibly part of it. But LFC fans, in my experience, are the most knowledgable football fans I've ever met. they were magnanimous that night and they deserve enormous credit.

Forest, 4th Norwich, 5th Derby, 6th Spurs, 7th Coventry, 8th Everton, 9th QPR, 10th Millwall, 11th Man. U., 12th Wimbledon, 13th Southampton, 14th Charlton, 15th Sheff. W., 16th Luton, 17th Villa, 18th Middlesbrough, 19th West Ham, 20th Newcastle.

    My late Grandad was a massive Arsenal supporter and use to force me to watch this on VHS every time I went round there as a kid! I have no affiliation with Arsenal at all (Watford fan), but this ending was incredible and eclipses the Aguero moment for me. Don't get me wrong, that was ridiculous, but I feel this moment was the best ever climax to a season. The daunting task of not only having to go to Anfield, but to win by TWO clear goals just couldn't be achieved....or so everyone thought! Amazing.

    I'm a Liverpool fan, and I was evelen years old in 1989. And me, my older brother and my man utd fan uncle still remember this like it was yesterday. We were watching this together in my home in London. Arsenal had to win 2-0 at anfield to win the championship on goal difference...Nobody gave arsenal any hope. But i must confess that the FA cup final defeat against Wimbledon the season before was actually still in the back of my mind. Something had to happen in the second half. Smith then of course scored. And that's when me and older brother were beginning to s*** our selves if you like.. Coming into storage time.. me and my older brother thought we've got this.... Then...... 😭... Michael Thomas scored with virtually the last kick off the season... Me and my older brother were stunned. Fergie always said that he wanted to knock us off our perch. But i think that even though we were to win back the championship the following season. That was our last championship win. I actually do think that it was this tragic season and this game that knocked us off our perch. We have never really the same since. I must admit that I hated arsenal for a long time because of this.. 😂... But what i didnt remember was that they threw bunches of flowers into the kop as a mark of respect for the victims of the hillsborough disaster.. So kudos to the arsenal players and fans for that... Since the creation of the FA premier league. We haven't been good enough. Until now of course. This season will be ours, and the championship will come home...ynwa

    I'm not an Arsenal fan, I really don't like them at all, but like most of the UK on that night, because of who you were playing, I watched the game with pals who supported Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, United, and Scum praying for an upset. Everyone of us was celebrating afterwards, as if it was our team that had won. It's without doubt the greatest finish to any top class English season. A. Because it was the closest of all time and involved the top 2. and B. Because the whole country celebrated as one, because in that era we were all sick to death of the boring pass back to the goalkeeper Liverpool tactics and the arrogance of Liverpool supporters! 🤣🤣

      @arsenal0782 United 1999 was the best team ever. But United's success that year was partly because of the rivalry and competition with that great Arsenal team.
      You won the league at Old Trafford in 98. That pushed us on in 99.
      The FA Cup Semi Final replay at Villa Park in 1999 is the best match I've ever seen. Winning that game was the final push for us to win the Treble. Nobody was going to stop us after that match. The momentum from winning that game was immense for us.
      The rivalry we had with Arsenal from 1998 to 2005 was absolutely world class. Two seriously brilliant teams that absolutely hated each other and brought the best out of each other.

    • @gunnerboy2975
      @gunnerboy2975 4 года назад

      arsenal0782 I’m too young (well, I’m 30 now) to remember the Graham days but both my dad & uncle are adamant that that was our greatest ever side during their lifetime. They honestly believed with Graham at the helm, we were made of steel & could’ve competed in Europe but due to Heysel (thanks a lot Liverpool!), we were banned from Europe. They both said Everton’s team of 1985 was a great team but again they were banned from participating in Europe due to Heysel.
      Going back to your earlier point, controversial of me but I think our 2001-02 Double Winners were better than our Invincibles of 2003-04. Don’t forget we still had Adams, Dixon & Seaman with us in that Double season.
      Completely agree with what you say because we did allow teams to invest & we just never caught on. Our problem to date now is that we’ve never really replaced Vieira. Was Torreira the answer? He’s like a pit bull terrier & gets stuck in but sadly he’s no Vieira, although he has potential to maybe be Vieira. We’ve needed that steel that protects the back four for a while now. Hopefully Arteta can bring back the glory days at Arsenal but we’ll just have to see.

      @DisobeyToday Liverpool’s 1984 treble winning side was better than that 99 team football was a more fair playing field back then. In the 90s sky basically bankrolled millions into united and no other team could stand a chance.
