I probably wouldn't have gone and see this until that. When the internet said, hey you screwed screwed this up and they said, you know, you're right, we'll redo it. Holy crap, that took some balls and I went on opening weekend.

I really loved this movie, but I cannot stress how much it WOULD NOT have worked with the old design. It really goes to show why Appeal is one of the principles of animation

I still don't understand how they missed a marketing tie-in with the Sonic drive-in restaurant chain. THEY EVEN HAVE CHILI DOGS ON THEIR MENU! They could've offered a chili dogs and golden onion rings combo. How in the spiky blue hell do you miss an opportunity like that?!?

@@timwoods2852 One is a fictional anthropomorphic blue hedgehog from a video game, the other is a restaurant chain. Kinda hard to mix those two things up. Besides, they could've been a little clever with it and ran ads that played off the differences between the two IPs.
Maybe for the sequel they'll see the errors of their ways.
@@glennwelsh9784 Actually it's super easy, barely an inconvenience. Glenn Welsh already gave a perfect example of how the burger chain could have done a cross promotional deal. And, since the Sonic restaurants are a chain that specializes in drive up service to make things faster, they could have leaned into that aspect of their business model for the tie-in. I mean, if Burger King can figure out how to do a Stranger Things cross promotion when BK isn't even mentioned in that series, it wouldn't be robot science to figure out how to connect Sonic the Hedgehog with Sonic the Drive In.
Hell, they could have even gone an extra step and made the rollerskates the servers use look like Sonic the Hedgehog's iconic red and white shoes and changed the uniforms to his blue color, maybe even put a fringe of blue spikes like Sonic's hair on their hats. There are lots of ways they could have pulled that off successfully.

The "real-life" sonic gave me nightmares. The reason we like Sonic is because he isn't realistic!
That's why I don't like when in Sonic media, they mix the animal characters and even egg-shaped Dr. Robotnik with realistic human characters, like for example, the Sonic X anime series, the Sonic 2006 game, and the Sonic Adventure trilogy. Cartoony Sonic characters and realistic looking humans never fit well, but this movie somehow made it well even with the redesigned CGI Sonic.

I was skeptical, but this movie was actually pretty great. I so commend the creators for taking the extra time to improve the animation, props to them!
It really was pretty fun.
And honestly it’s one of the healthiest relationships I’ve seen in a film like this.
Listens to her spouse and believes him, trusts him and helps him. While she is actively engaged in the 3rd act delivery? That’s pretty awesome. Normally it would have been grounds to throw him out until it was all over/they could go back to normal.
Sadly, this isn’t the norm in movies, so there won’t be much attention given to this, even though it is a good change of pace
*God*, yes. I was very much dreading the typical 'cartoon character somehow helps the main male lead with his relationship problems' plot, and was pleasantly surprised that not only is Donut Lord already married, but his relationship is also healthy and stable - which has the additional effect of making their eventual parent-son relationship with Sonic much more prominent. =D

They actually did their homework and saw how Star Wars was failing because they ignored their fans, so they decided it would be worse to lose their audience than to reanimate the whole movie
The studio didn't re-animate, they just swapped the model, which is easier to do.
It means Disney will copy the moves and everyone will get awstruck by it...remember whose the one creating Iron Man movie..Paramount Studio
Rumor has it Sega was already unhappy with the design, but the designers were being stubborn. So the fan backlash was their "I told you so" moment.

Glad I set my expectations so low. I really enjoyed this movie putting the lower hanging cliches aside. I'm looking pumped for the sequel! I think having the characters on model was a big factor. This felt like a fan made a sonic movie. Let's hope the sequel has a more compelling story.

I saw it at an advance screening, so no one was really worried about the virus at that point. The last flick I saw before the shutdown was The Invisible Man.......which was available online a couple weeks later.
