What I found really useful for carving out the indentation for magnets is a hot knife. Press your magnet on the foam as normal, but then take the hot knife and melt a circle as deep as you need it. This removes the step of having to make an extra incision underneath to remove the foam. It's neater too.

That sounds great but I sometimes avoid the hot knife because of fumes in a tight space but I will try it eventually.
