Is the Nissan Leaf still a viable electric car option in 2022?
A lot has changed since the first mass-market EV arrived in the UK over a decade ago. The improved second-generation model was launched in 2017, offering a larger interior and more electric range than its predecessor.
But is it still a good buy when compared to rivals like the Volkswagen ID.3 and Peugeot e-208? Or is it about time for a refresh? Tom explores this and more in today’s in-depth review.

Are you considering getting a Nissan Leaf in 2022?
No.....just bought a new i10 😄
@@robertlloyd7493 How are you finding the i10 Robert?
@@OsvUkVehicleSupply a great improvement on the old one...plus 56 mpg average
I have mine arriving June time hopefully. Can't wait
+ VAT . Hiden prices or what ?
I purchased my Leaf Tekna 62 kWh in 2020 and it has been GREAT and totally reliable. The thing I don't understand is that most of the new EVs still have only just about the same range and performance. My Leaf does 220 miles and goes from 0 - 60 in 6.7 secs.
Great to hear you're enjoying your new Leaf! Thanks for watching 👍
I have a 2018 Tekna 40kwh , 90,000 miles . Battery SOH is 89.9%. All good and so easy to live with.
Brilliant to hear about your Tekna, Antonio! 👍 If you enjoyed the review, make sure to subscribe: bit.ly/319ZKoT
It does looks sharp Tom,love the color and its really underrated :D
Great review!
Thanks David!
Great review, I've been thinking more and more about a LEAF as in New Zealand we get many used imports from both the UK and Japan and they're nearly half the price of the others. I drove a 2017 model a few years ago and was surprised how much fun it was and was really nimble. I find the upright driving position annoying, I drive a 2017 Civic Hatch and love how low you sit. I also worry about the battery life, most we get here are in the 90% SOH. I'm still amazed at the level of hate the LEAF gets, I think the design, while not stunning, I've seen a lot worse on the road. My main worry would be in another couple of years they'll be complete obsolete.

Never considered a Nissan leaf until this year and took a punt. Best decision I've made given the savings it's brought me. Admittedly I'd love a Tesla but it just didn't bring the value element which the leaf did. Overall I've been really happy and it's put our petrol car into retirement, but it still comes out for those rare 300 mile journeys
That's great to hear Ben, would you recommend the Nissan Leaf to others looking to go down the EV route?
@@OsvUkVehicleSupply definitely depending on their use of the car. I came from a Cupra Leon 300bhp and glad I changed as the infotainment system drove me mad.
I ordered an Acenta Leaf in December - with Carwow and the £2500 government grant as it was then, it'll cost me £22K. The wall charger is fitted and ready, just waiting for the car, which the dealer says I can expect sometime in June. It'll be great for running around town, which is 99% of my use, and should be easy to charge overnight, like my phone. If I ever need to go further, there's always the train (or the other half's diesel). I can hardly wait for it to arrive!
A Diesel & an EV in the same household. You are living the dream...
How exciting, David! What made you choose the Leaf over other EVs?
@@OsvUkVehicleSupply It's the cheapest EV that looks and behaves like a normal car and has a reasonable track record of reliability. I like the fact that it has proper buttons and controls rather than relying heavily on a touchscreen. The lack of range doesn't bother me because I have a home charger, rarely do more than 30 or 40 miles in a day and won't be using it for road trips! It should be perfectly suited to short distance, urban driving, running the kids around, commuting to work, shopping etc. We'll keep the missus's diesel and use that for motorway driving, where it is much more at home. It's not exactly living the dream, but there is a certain satisfaction in using the right tool for the right job!
Dave, you're an Oxymoron....
@Bolt electric⚡️ Yes, because there's no point spending money on bells and whistles that you don't need. If you only going to be using a vehicle as a local runabout, stuff like heated steering wheels and advanced driver assistance is pretty much irrelevant.
I ordered a Nissan Leaf 40 kWh tenka in January and I have been told it’s in back order and still waiting on a date for delivery. It looks like the changing point might be installed before the car is delivered.
Sorry to hear that William. The ongoing semiconductor chip shortage continues to delay vehicle production and push back delivery times. Our article has more information on this - bit.ly/3JkQbqh
I'm buying a brand new e+62 Tekna and I am telling you it is a much better looking car than all it's competitors including the Tesla 3, I love it
Good review, hope your hands get better soon.
They're healing just fine 👍 Thanks for watching!
I did, ordered in late 2021 when the grant and deals on offer made an e+ Tekna just over £28k. Arrived earlier this year. Yes some bits feel a little outdated and it has some quirks, but it's a proper family sized hatch with decent tech (like propilot, keyless entry, 360 cameras, etc) that rides nicely, has a comfortable hardwearing leather interior and decent performance. Enough range for typical day trips without needing to keep speed down on the motorway or fret about heating being on. Perfect everyday family runabout and cheaper than most of the smaller supermini EVs.
Spend (a lot) more if you need the rapid charging ability to do 500+ mile days easily, or want every function hidden away in a touchscreen. If it meets your needs though it's still a good choice in 2022.
Great to hear that you're enjoying your Leaf, Simon. Thanks for watching - make sure to subscribe if you haven't already! bit.ly/319ZKoT
Great presentation
Thanks for the great feedback Gill! Are you thinking about getting a Leaf?
Great review of the *2018* model, however its 2022 and Nissan have released a new model with different batteries etc. The video title is almost misleading.
Thanks for the great feedback 👍 This review was filmed prior to the reveal of the model refresh and information is correct at the time of recording.
It appears to be well-made. I really like the hue and think it's underappreciated. The range of this updated Leaf is still restricted. Unfortunately, if things keep going this way, Japanese automakers will be on their final legs.It appears to be well-made. I really like the hue and think it's underappreciated. The LEAF is a usable and brilliant car. It is even easy for an older petrol driver who has been driving ICE for 40 years. Everything is instinctive and fit & finish is superb. I love my 40kwh.
Thanks for watching Dave! Fantastic to hear your LEAF is still going strong 💪
@@OsvUkVehicleSupply thanks for the no nonsense approach and presentation. I have subscribed.
You didn’t mention 2-way charging which these are supposed to have
Thanks for the feedback Barrie - we'll take this on-board 👍 Are you interested in getting a Nissan Leaf?
I have a 2014 Acenta 24kw. Been fun to drive, with a little shove when you floor it. However I rarely find a need to take it out of eco mode, partly due to the crap range on the 24kw battery, but mostly because around town it's quick enough in eco.
I am unlikely to go for another leaf when this one becomes too expensive to keep on the road due to Nissan sticking with the dead Chademo connector. That connector lost the EU and US markets several years ago, but Nissan hasn't responded. Likewise, the Leaf really needs a redo. It has been surpassed by the competition on pretty much every part of the car
the leaf's going out of production in 2025, so no real point them having to redesign the charging system
That 'dead' chaedemo connector is nearly on all the rapid chargers AND is still better than most Zoe's that don't even HAVE a rapid charge option - be grateful
Good detailed review, BUT , why not use a decibel meter to give an ACCURATE noise reading INSIDE The car, far easier for us watchers to gauge the quietness of a car, also dimensions in good old fashioned feet and inches would be appreciated instead of all this CM RUBBISH 👍
It’s a great shape nothing wrong with the front end, at least it’s not the same as all the others you mentioned which seem to be copying each other!
That's fair enough! 👍 Would you considering getting a Leaf?
Thinking of getting a tekna plus brand new sometime this year, won't pay more than 30k cash purchase
Just get it on PCP you ten bob G.

Nothing wrong with the looks.. Just needs more range and a more slick infotainment.
Thanks for watching Denis. Hopefully we'll see improved range and infotainment with the next-gen model 👍
Looks like a bigger, if slightly more awkward version of the very pretty Nissan Micra I keep in Portugal.
I drove a leaf earlier this week - a courtesy car whilst mine was in for service - it’s the first EV I’ve driven and was pleasantly surprised.
Obviously not as much of a petrolhead’s dream as my GT86 daily driver in the UK, but very competent in a very understated way.
No, not for me. As the driver of an older, 30KwH Leaf, I have just opted to move to a petrol-electric hybrid for my next car. The reasons? 1) This newer Leaf is still limited in range ; 2) The wait to get one is too long ; 3) Despite their June 2021 press-release, Gridserve still haven't introduced CHadEMO/CCS dual-charging and manufacturers haven't brought out CHadEMO/CCS adapters, so the opportunities to rapid-charge the Leaf an-route are limited.
What a pity that they dropped the ball on this one.

I have never come across a motorway station in the UK that doesn't have either AC or Chademo
"It's a pretty weird front end, isn't it?"
No. No it isn't. It follows the Nissan group aesthetic and, as Nissan is one of the biggest selling manufacturers in the UK, the design language is very familiar. Anything but "weird".
You compliment the design throughout, but then vaguely state that it is "dated". Now that is "weird"!
Nissan ariya should had this 60kwh battery as base with 35k USD as base price then they will sell well.
BEV are more expensive to manufacture, so that price be a money-losing vehicle for Nissan. They would be better-off not selling at all.
42:38 it has a look of the ford s-max
Ohh nice observation! 👀 Thanks for watching
A polite request... Im asking All car reviewers and Auto Journalists to do the same. Please show and let us know detailed information about the tyre that comes with the new vehicle (Brand, type, summer/winter/all-season, speed, size and general auto industry tyre reviews grading of the tyre - meaning, good, average, bad))
Why? 2 Reasons...
1. The tyre is the most important safety feature of any car, as it is the ONLY thing that connects the vehicle with the road, regardless of how good or poor the car is itself.
2. By Auto Journalists and car RUclipsrs doing this, it will hopefully start vehicles manufacturers taking note. It may even hopefully push them towards going with best ranked tyre manufacturer, or at least offering different tyres for a customer to have a choice that will be put on the vehicle, with the best available tyre, as well as a tyre that is suitable for the time of year that it is sold.
For example, living in Northern Scotland, UK, every time i pick-up a new car, often in December, regardless of European car manufacturer, they 'only' put summer tyres on it for the UK market. Yet the safe and sensible customer focused safety thing to do, would be putting on All Season tyres as a minimum. So for last 10 years, every new car i have had (5), from picking the car up at a dealership, within 30 minutes I've had to drive straight to a tyre specialists (If road conditions allow and no snow or ice) and put on Winter Tyres and in recent years with tyre technology, All Season tyres. This is often an extra £1000+ cost on top of what I've just paid for the vehicle. It is crazy and frustrating car manufactures will not listen or change and car nothing to the safety of their customers, certainly in the UK market.
Thank-you..
To be honest I stick with the Nissan Leaf as the competitors are just too expensive.. been driving them since 2014 and nothing else comes close to the value for money for the size of vehicle. That few thousand pounds makes all the difference when buying on finance.
Today my Nissan Leaf has to go to Nissan heaven 2013 MK1 Purchased from Nissan Dealership, full service history and all repairs completed at Nissan and today at only 48k, yes 48k! miles the error code of inverter and motor was found with an estimated repair bill of £9800 pounds. Nissans response was car is over 8 years old so we cant help.
When speaking at the start could you stop changing the camera for no reason!!!!
The way this chap moves his hands around makes me think he’s massaging an imaginary cow🤣🤣🤣
I prefere the Mk 1 for looks
bad camera work
Hi Ron, we appreciate the feedback which we'll take on-board 👍 Are you interested in getting a Nissan Leaf anytime soon?
School for car reviewers, lesson 1: Put your hands in your bloody pockets and leave them there!
Thanks for the feedback Simon - we'll take this on board 👍
As much as I want Nissan to succeed, this is a pathetic attempt of an EV. Sadly Japanese car manufacturers are on their last legs if they continue like this.
We're excited for a third-generation model - hopefully it will shake up the EV formula. Thanks for watching 👍
So I would have to leave the 62kw car on my local garage forecourt for 11.30 hours on a 7.4 kw charge point (only the ONE point), or drive 5 miles & wait an 90 minutes on 50kw charger, of which there are only TWO charging points available. if I can't have a wall box & use a 3 pin plug 17hrs. All for £35,000 on a dated interior & the top of the range has a ridiculous Bose taking up so much boot space. No height adjustable boot floor either. Never mind LEAF it alone I wouldn't give 35 pence for it.
What no reviewer talks about, is the extensive rise in car insurance for electric vehicles compared to fossil fuel equivalents.
When they start producing an electric car that will do 400 miles plus on one charge & you can readily charge the thing in 10-15 minutes vehicle new prices nearer the price of an equivalent fossil fuel car then people might buy these cars. Over priced, out of the range of most families never mind as a second car most of us couldn't afford one of them. At the end of the day the UK is a tiny Island that produces 2 percent of the worlds emissions & we are mere drop in the ocean. I will stick to self charging hybrid until 2035 at least.
If you were charging the Leaf from a completely empty battery, then you would be correct. However you have to take into account how many miles per day you expect to drive. In my case, driving to and from the office is a round trip of 44 miles, which would use up something like a quarter of the battery, and it would only take about 3 hours to charge on a 7.4 kW charger. If you are in a position to have a home charger, even better.
You are talking some sense but mostly non sense. The car that can do all those things you mentioned is ages away and btw we need better infrastructure rather than better EVs right now.
Reason why I wouldn't consider this vehicle
Interior is boring
rear seats seem to only suit children
infotainment looks dull
boot space look awkward
Chademo, still.. come on Nissan.
Price is too high for any trim. just not very impressed for a Refresh of a vehicle that kick-started the market
while other vehicles do go for more money many of them offer a decent all-round package. being realistic when the time comes my budget may never stretch more that 30k and I'd feel cheated on this vehicle from what i've seen of it.
Do you have another EV in mind?
@@OsvUkVehicleSupply I do, the Peugeot e-208 or the MG4

Buy a Mazda 3 instead. Make the most of fossil fuels whilst you still can. Don't be a Sheep. Hydrogen is the future long term anyway...
Respectfully disagree about hydrogen. First, hydrogen cars are still electric vehicles and second, the hydrogen has to be produced - this is almost exclusively from fossil fuels - which will not reduce the problems they cause with pollution and carbon emissions. In fact hydrogen will only increase fossil fuel usage unless there is a massive switch to renewables because the process is only about 35% efficient in converting fossil fuel power to hydrogen. The oil and gas companies have a very strong vested interest in promoting hydrogen use because they know nearly all such hydrogen comes from burning fossil fuels. In addition, it seems very unlikely that many people will be able to generate their own hydrogen in the same way that they can generate electricity from solar power or indeed owning shares in a windmill, like Ripple Energy. If you think the infrastructure is poor for public EV charging, it would be far far worse with hydrogen which has virtually no infrastructure. Hydrogen generated from excess wind power probably does have a future as back-up storage or for some other purpose, but the urgent need for carbon reductions is now - and with many millions of cars on the world’s roads CO2 emissions are still rising.
