Course Synopsis:
This course builds beautifully on Cillian’s previous course ‘Guitar Progressions’ and takes the art of accompaniment to a whole new level. A knowledge of how to play Guitar in standard tuning is a prerequisite. Cillian chooses a selection of well known tunes from the Irish tradition to demonstrate styles and techniques that focus on a variety of rhythms, keys and modes. He skilfully borrows from other genres to spice things up: Calypso rhythms, James Brown, Niall Rodgers, Pachabel’s Canon, and other popular pop riffs all make appearances and contribute to the master accompanist’s repertoire. Cillian also examines single string accompaniment, dampening and dead strum techniques and the use of more ‘jazzy’ chords. The Boys of Bluehill, The Rights of Man,The Connacht Man's Rambles, The Cliffs of Moher, Tamlin and the Silver Spear are all well known tunes that are featured. Each lesson is accompanied with practice mp3’s of the melody and PDF’s of chord structures and shapes. This course is a must for those serious about developing an extensive repertoire of guitar skills in general, and more specifically for those wishing to become a master accompanist.

Hi. I thought it's pretty strange to use dominant seventh chord in Irish traditional music. Even simple major and minor triads have a strong color, that can be too strong for tender melody. Is't it?
I don't think an 'up to speed' Irish reel has ever been described as a tender melody before - BUT, you are Russian so we can understand where you're coming from - Mir
Online Academy of Irish Music, excuse me, I don't understand your last sentence =)
this video and audio are not alligned........anyone else having this issue?
It's always a good idea to "start, right at the start" and to "start right, at the start" . It's my island.
Ladies and Gentlemen- this guy is awesome. Love this lesson!
Thanks Ben!
It's worth noting that you are replacing the A chord with the F#7 and THEN replacing the D with Bm. Not that you could replace the A with F# if you weren't going to Bm but that helps with the timing I think and makes sense. Thank you for the great lesson! I'll be ready for the OAIM soon!
Great lesson, thank you so much!! ... you can be really proud of the irish music...
Hi Jane, we are :) Lot's more lessons with Cillian on the site here - www.oaim.ie/guitar/guitar-technique-accompaniment/

Sounds sooo cool!! 😄😄
Hi Steve, plenty more tunes from Cillian here - www.oaim.ie/guitar/guitar-technique-accompaniment/
I like your backing guitar tips.
I only wished you had a melody guitar player on some day, hopefully.
By the way:
Does anyone know of a duet album of guitars, 1 flatpicking and 1 backing by any luck?
It seem so rare sadly.
Love the guitar sound in Irish trad.
Great!
I came here thinking “It’s obligated to play Kashmir when in dadgad...”
But I learned a new skill to make me a better guitarist. Great lesson!
Glad you liked it !
Except it's not DADGAD
I am new here in this channel. I like it so much🥰
watching from oz
Haha this could also be a Frank Turner Master class! Great tunes.
Glad you liked it !
How can i watch all of this guys videos?
Very nice
Glad you liked it Kevin. Have you been practicing it?
I have been! I swear! 😰
Excellent tutorial. I play octave mandolin so the chord shapes are different but I can apply the rhythms and turnarounds etc on my OM for accompaniment. Are you using palm mutes to enhance the choppy changes? Slan from Downunder.
Hey, glad you like the lesson. You would ask questions like this on the OAIM forum www.oaim.ie
Very good man. Keep it up
Hey! Great video:) Just a question: How do you go about damping the strings in the first rhythm?
I'd suggest following the course - www.oaim.ie/guitar/guitar-technique-accompaniment/
Hello lads, something happened to synchronization of video and audio in this video, can you please correct it ? Last week it was fine, I’ve just got to my guitar :)
You might need to restart your device. Let me know if that helps..
Aye having the same issue

Hi, thanks for de video. Im from Chile in South America and learning Irish Guitar. I can`t fine tracks with melody to practice. Do you know where to buy them or get them?
Hi Vero, We have that feature on the www.oaim.ie website. There are several speeds and 100's of tunes to play along with.
HI Cillian, I was just wondering, and I'll try to make myself clear in my question, but forgive my english, I'm french. Anyway: it's about the backbeat. I fully agree you stress the 3, but is it ok to divide the counting by 2 and to say you're stressing 2 and 4? Somehow it makes it easier for me, don't ask why! So I just need to know if it might get me confused or if it's alright. Thanks for everything to the whole team!
That sounds right Frederic - let me know if that works for you.
next time please play only guitar as backing track so i can play tin wristle along with it. thank you so much bro. i love this. so happy
There are hundreds of such tracks on the website - ruclips.net/video/Hjbb_oL8gpw/видео.html

Irish as they come this lads voice is
Could anyone please quickly tell me what tuning we're i, excuse me it may be obvious
Hi Anita, Cillian is using standard tuning.
What make of guitar are you using there.....looks beautiful
Taylor, you can tell from the 3 dials :)
Can you use this in pretty much most reels? Like could I walk into a session with this video fully studied and join in the reels?
Hi, you can accompany reels in the key that the tune is in. I wouldn't recommend sitting in a session until you have a good bit of experience as there's a lot to it. If you're new to backing tunes start here - www.oaim.ie/guitar/guitar-basics-accompaniment/
Hi Cillian,
Do you just do accompanyment, or do you also do stand alone tunes for guitar.
Thanks,
michael
Hi Michael, Cillian teaches accompaniment only. However, there are a few flatpicking tunes taught on the OAIM website in the Guitar Basics course - oaim.ie/course/34/guitar_basics
@@onlineacademyofirishmusic Page not found - where do I learn strumming patterns. I just signed up to your online course - where are the rest of these lessons. thanks
What kind of acoustic guitar is usually used for Irish music?
mimi music a wooden one.
@@herrklamm1454 97% of guitars are made of wood
Thank you for this lesson. :) Which Guitar do you Play? Sounds Great.
It's a Martin. How are you getting on with the lesson?
Edit: It's a Taylor
man that flute is friggin' loud!!
Iv watched this ten times and cant find where he goes over the strumming pattern can anyone timestamp me?
Hi Daniel, It's a reel, up down up down. How long have you been playing Irish trad?
Cheers bud ill look that up. Only got into trad about 4 days ago

Please somebody tell me what's the whistle on background?
Hi Elya, Is that the AshPlant reel?
I'd say it's a low d Tin whistle, penny whistle ex....
I'd say that's a flute, not a whistle.
@@onlineacademyofirishmusic Silver Spear reel.
that's an irish flute, I'm pretty sure.
Why is the DADGAD tuning not used?
It can be a d usually is most folks play standard , nothing stopping ya
I find it very confusing what you are doing on the sixth string third fret when you play the D chord, are you just dampening it? The camera view is also not square on to the fingerboard for easy viewing of where your fingers are being placed? but otherwise, its a very good informative lesson..... thank you 🙏
Hi, you can find all the lesson support on the site - chord charts, sheet music, mp3s etc
Hello! I would like to know what guitar model is recommended to start playing traditional Irish music
A steel string you like the sound of.
Lowden o25 If you can afford . If not you should look at Taylor
A BC Rich Warlock or Dean Dimebag would be excellent traditional Irish music guitars
cant find the other 12 lessons?
Hi Siusan, you can find those on the OAIM website - www.oaim.ie/guitar/guitar-technique-accompaniment/
@@onlineacademyofirishmusic Thankyou!
Is most Irish trad music in D?
Hi Andy, No many other keys are played, but D & G are very common. Do you play any guitar?
❤👏👏👏❤️
Hi. ¿Tunning?
Thanks a lot!!!!!
Standard... how are you getting on with it?
Sound doesn’t match video. Hope you can fix.
Took me a few mins but it's DADGAD tuning?
Hi Roger, it’s drop d tuning…
Nice video! Your third finger is a meter long, I cant hit that A note
Keep practising and you'll get it !

Do you already need to learn to play guitar before learning to play it Irish?
Hi Alex, Sure, get down the basics of the instrument then start our Irish music basic guitar course - www.oaim.ie/guitar/guitar-basics-accompaniment/
so disapointed to don't see your fingers, i don't understand what you are doing when some fingers hide the others
I agree..... I have also commented on this, such a shame
This video needs a check, audio and video are not synchronized
Hi, we’re checking thanks !
Sorry, That should read 'slappy'
You might consider a heavier plectrum. It appears you are using a 0.6 or 0.8mm one. which sounds a bit 'sloppy'. Try getting used to a Big Stubby 2mm, you won't go back, I promise. Otherwise, good stuff.
Ill be honest, playing those chords in standard tuning sounds like American country music
And where do you think American country comes from?
From what I understand, American country music and culture is a direct descendant of Irish folk music and culture
The video appears out of sync
Thanks for letting us know ! We’re working on it. Mathew
Thanks! Looks great now!
I'm sure this is probably a good lesson but I couldn't get through it way way way way too much talking
Eh, that's what Irish people do. The gift of the gab.
