thanks for this, wanted to ask if you could do the *Clone G.A.R Gunship, designated as LAAT/i and it's variants* I was planning on writing stuff about it in a fanfiction.
Second most memorable would be Four Seven Niner from RvB. I count her because Bungie, then 343i actually supported RvB, giving the licensing to use Halo stuff for it and giving easter eggs to them in Halo 3 and 4. Maybe more but I only know of the RvB Easter Eggs in those two.
Really one of the best scifi vessels ever. They took a pretty generic dropship design and made it one of the most iconic designs in gaming, which has now expanded to all other media.
I like the long legs at the back - not only as they seem quite practical for balance on landing - but also they look like the long legs of a bird like a Stork, Flamingo (or Pelican). I also like how they retract seamlessly into the support pillars - the other clever things is the positioning of the engines works really well for both lift mode and forward flight - so I think that if there is ever a need in say 20 years time for a Jet engine version of the proposed 4 Engine Osprey - I'd see some benefits in designs to be influenced by in this craft. I think they took the design of the Aliens Colonial Marines Dropship and made it a little more practical for atmospheric missions. Though Over all I like both the same - I do think the pelican looks more buildable for real.
I mean. One or two a game is ok. In COD, if you get on a helicopter it's probably gonna get shot down. In Halo, you usually make it to the destination, and the Pelican usually makes it out.
side note: The Pelican can be modified to carry up to 30 Spartan-2 in full Mjolnir Mk.VI armor, in it's main hold, so long as the seats and other object are removed beforehand It's in the Fall of Reach, and First Strike novels
I think the guys at Bungie seriously overestimated the caliber on certain types of weapons. There's no way the barrel on that rear-mounted machine gun Gunny is firing is 51mm- more like 7.62mm. Same for the nose cannon- a 70mm round would be something mounted on a tank or a mortar.
It's a autocannon. Besides - an A-10 attacker (modern day) Is 17*18*4m large (compared to the pelican's 30*23*10) Has a 30mm GAU Depleted Uranium cannon - The pelican is 2x as large so It would have a cannon 2x30mm - 60mm cannon - But it's 500 years in the future so A 70mm cannon would be viable technology.
@@EthanThomson well halo is ficition. It take place 500 years from our timeline.Who knows that a 70mm autocannon is possible over 500 year of technological advances.
Honestly, it seems like the writers at Bungie fall for that whole 'big bullets are better' trope that a lot of people seem to fall for. By that logic, if stuff's better in the future, of course the calibers would be upgunned too. Same reason the 'assault rifle' fires 7.62 NATO, even though that would make it a battle rifle. It's just writers not understanding military history. The trend in ballistics has been to make the calibers *smaller*, not larger. Smaller rounds are faster and easier to hit with, and in small arms they actually produce more devastating wounds than larger caliber rounds. But the main advantage is weight and ammunition carried.
@@trinalgalaxy5943 Agreed. I don't even call 79's pelicans. There is literally no benefit to the Hind look. America stole a Hind once. We found out it was really only worth it to have a look. So it's now less practical in most ways, and uglier. Who carried ammo on the outside of the dropship? The weaponry was mostly a downgrade from the 70mm. The extra engine in the back was a nice touch. The cannon on to in Halo 4 can't really aim behind over the curve or in front and below. The two most important places for an aircraft mounted weapon to see. If I were a Pelican pilot in the UNSC. I would take a 77 any day of the year.
This ship was the inspiration for my own interplanetary gunship that I designed for a science-fiction series I've been working on for years, Halo had a big influence on my sci-fi stories and especially particular ship and vehicle designs, love a lot of the UNSC stuff. Great video as always man, I hope you answer my Q&A question I left on your last Q&A video in the next one.

While playing Halo Wars 2 I main as Sargent Johnson but I love Captain Cutters main attack power that calls in three pelican gun ships that shreds the opponents forces. And the super pelican gunship is a beautiful destructive lady that brings death to your enemies.
Awesome! Thank you for publishing this review of the Pelican! Excellent review of this central piece of Halo human technology and it's variants. Spacedock continues to be the premiere source for technical detail in a multitude of SciFi universes. I look forward to future reviews of Halo tech and the tech of many other franchises. Spacedock's reviews have actually gotten me interested in other SciFi franchises with which I was previous unacquainted. Kudos! Keep up the fantastic work!
I have never thought of the pelican dropship as reliable, since if you have played the games you will only ever see them being shot to shit. I still love them though, and its one of my favorite dropships.
I think people don't understand that the Pelican is a support vehicle and not a direct combat ship hence why it just has a self defense machine gun on the nose. I compare it to the Huey from Vietnam, it was meant to deliver troops and supplies into the field. Sure you can use it direct support but it was weak enough that small arms could bring it down.
DeltaWolf1000 funny thing is though actual pilots and aviation experts have stated the old pelican from before four and five is actually a perfect design and if we were to build it would be very easy to do and would fly just as easy but halo four and five pelican shouldn't be able to fly because of its wing span, shape andnwhere the thrusters are seated and how they move in flight.
the fictional Pelican D77-TC can actually be a realistic Mars spaceship . . . using present day technological breakthroughs & realistic modifications the Pelican D77-TC can serve as transit ship between ISS (in Mars high orbit) & landing on Mars surface transporting humans & cargo to & from M-ISS . . . the Pelican D77-TC can be outfitted with ion propulsion . . .
Kinda interesting to come back to a video on the pelican consider Bungie decided to basically carry on its legacy into the Destiny franchise with the Hawk.
I can easily see the pelican's design being incorporated into real life dropships of the future. Technically the Ospray dropship could be considered a prototype
I think Chris is talking about Grievous' larger variant at the battle of Saleucami since both versions were actually in the clone wars cartoon. If he covers the base model I'm sure he'd mention the larger variant like he mentions the Pelican variants in this video.
It's because this is the 77 series Pelican. Halo 4 and 5 is the 79 series. Plus most people including myself hate the 79 series and firmly believe it shouldn't even be called a Pelican. It's uglier, Russian biased, less beefy. Two things people like about it. Extra engine in the rear, and you don't need to trigger an easter egg to fly it.
As a HALO fan, it's nice to see your info videos on UNSC, Covenant, and forerunner vehiles. If I may ask, do you believe the the UNSC or Covenant Empire could effectively fight the Star Wars Galactic Empire or Star Gate Gould (?) Empire?

Is it my imagination or does this look a lot like the Astraeus ship from "Eureka" season 5? The one built by Global Dynamics to travel from earth to Titan by FTL.
Do you know anything about it's powerplant? Is it hydrogen-fueled like most of the ground vehicles or full fusion power? Presumably the latter, since it seems to have deorbit-land-escape capability... that's a pretty nice delta-V.
I was thinking the exact same thing. Those gun measurements seem a bit off to me. 70mm would be close to the same size as the main gun from a stardard-issue Sherman tank from WWII. And 51mm machine gun?? Uhh...the GAU-8 tank-buster cannon mounted on the A-10 Warthog is only 30mm, and each cartridge is almost a foot long, with the bullet itself being an inch thick and 4 inches long. So you're saying the standard turret on the back of a pelican fires 2-inch thick bullets?? I'm thinking they meant maybe .51-caliber rounds...that sounds much more realistic. LOL
from what i rember they did the same with the long sword, that apparently has a 100mm rotary gattling cannon lol, talk about overkill granted it kinda makes sense in space but on the flip side i could see you loading it with he rounds and turning a good sized area to dust with strafing runs
100mm gattling cannon?!? Geez...well, in space, i could see that, seeing as the Longsword was large for a fightercraft when you think about it. Seeing as how these were designed before the covenant war, and were made to fight other human units which relied strictly on armor and not shielding, I would imagine a cannon of that size would be perfect for penetrating the armor of a starship if they knew where to hit it. Of course I had to look up the specs on the Pelican again to make sure he was correct...it does indeed mention a 70mm chain gun that replaced the original 40mm nose-mounted autocannon. BUT, the M247 GPMG out the back fires standard 7.62x51mm ammunition. I think he left out the 7.62 part...that makes a ton more sense, since the 7.62 round is basically the .308 cartridge.

Aliens dropship has bigger payload. Pelican is probably somewhat more maneuverable.
Banshees! Fast and low!
70mm auto cannon? damn id think that would make meat sauce of an elite zealot in a single shot lol
Could you start the Starcraft universe spaceship?
