As someone who’s played violin with my school orchestras for almost seven years, this is very much so like me. I don’t have perfect pitch, far from it, but if you give me certain notes I could tell you immediately what note it is in a certain range/interval, and only certain instruments. If we were talking about the string base my little sister plays, then I cannot tell you the notes. If you play a note in a certain interval range on either a violin or viola as they are similar enough in tonal range, then I can tell a note like Yechan is able to. It helps when I’m trying to play in tune but ticks me off if I hear a whole section out of tune as it feels like a fly near my ear buzzing. But it’s nice to see a professional musician who also knows what he’s doing with an instrument as hard to learn like the violin- there are no frets to mark where notes or chords go and how precise it has to be- can hear a note to transcribe to his violin just makes me even more inspired to learn more and be better at playing my violin in the future.
