  • Polyrhythms and polymeters can groove hard as heck. The trick is to really internalize the cadence. Pretty soon, you'll have every buddy, guy, and fwiend getting confused to your cool grooves.

    Another top class lesson 🤗
    The text lines along with the 5 over 4 examples made it so much easier to understand.
    But I'm completely lost trying to make a groove out of it.
    My ears: Yes I hear what you say.
    My brain: 🤯
    My body: 👻

    At 3:03 sounds like part of the Black Page. Is that a rhythm Zappa used?

  • @handler803

    Out of topic but is your sound a stock Roland setting or is it customised?

    • @JoshMerhar
      @JoshMerhar  3 года назад

      It's a custom kit made up of stock samples from the drum computer. I made some adjustments, like tuning and muffling, but all the samples came preloaded.

    So is a 4:5 polyrhythm always just a beat in 5/4?

    • @JoshMerhar
      @JoshMerhar  3 года назад +1

      Not necessarily! The polyrhythm can be compressed to fit in a smaller space, like quintuplets and 16th notes filling a single beat, or 5 8th notes spaced evenly against 4 8th notes, which takes up 2 beats.

  • @andreasbreitwieser1449

      He literally said count in 5 1/16ths which is quintuplets

    • @o0junglist0o93
      @o0junglist0o93 4 года назад +3

      Yo, that's not wrong dude!
      You can count every polyrhythm from both sides. It's real important to hear both. With this example, either 4 groups of 5's OR 5 groups of 16ths, different feels, same rhythm!

    • @JoshMerhar
      @JoshMerhar  4 года назад +4

      Nope, that's not wrong! That's kind of the basis of this entire concept. You should be able to trick your ear into hearing these grooves both ways - in 5 as 16th notes, or in 4 as quintuplets.

    • @maqirama
      @maqirama 4 года назад

      @@jangobango2847 yeah2, sorry I'm quite new tbh, haha...I always got confused even with slight change of term used. I forgot that 5 1/16ths are quintuplet.

    • @maqirama
      @maqirama 4 года назад

      @@o0junglist0o93 I kinda notice that...but ever since I listened to a lot of songs that incorporated "tuplets", I found myself hard to listen to the poly-rhythmic part. I kinda think of it as playing tuplets over a certain hand pattern.

    sorry babe im fucking master on the topic, and i can see clearly that youre missing in first place the title and the concept itself, you only played few elements of a 4:5 polyrhythm but never never played 5 over 4, so the whole video is just few parts of ..just the half of the learning process of that polymetry; idk people doesnt see the whole iceberg of rhythm musical language possibilities

    Like what your doing here, but wow, that background music while your talking is SUPER distracting. Especially when your trying to repeat the rhythm in your head after hearing it and the background music comes in and just destroys your train of though. It is so distracting, it is nearly unwatchable. If you're trying to get people to subscribe and follow your lessons, you seriously need to lose the background music while your talking.

    • @paulstewart3216
      @paulstewart3216 3 года назад +1

      Agreed - sorry Josh, but it's really distracting. I'm no RUclipsr, but I suspect anyone sticking around to watch a vid about playing 5:4 polyrhythms isn't going to be put off just because you're talking over silence.

    OMG, hope this odd beat/poly-rhytm trend will pass soon, don`t like the "new normal" anymore. After about 10 years "progstyle-mania" it becomes boring ;-)
