Happy birthday mads! 40 is not so bad actually it's a really good time in your life. You have it better than 99% of other 40 year olds. You have a direction in your life, you have a loved one to share it with, and a plan. So enjoy 40. I would tell you that it's all downhill from there but you already know that. I would also tell you that it goes fast but it just does what it does. As far as Athena she's coming along fantastic. I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we're all proud of the work that you do and the effort that you put into it. And while I'll miss the building phase once you move off that I'm looking forward to the cruising phase as well.
One thought regarding the chain locker. Once sanded and painted, install up to 2” (50 mm) rigid foam insulation on the chain locker side of the forward bulkhead. This way, heat or cold from the chain locker won’t transfer to the berthing area. Happy Belated Birthday, Mads!
Another thought, a sacrificial piece of teak or other rot resistant grating on the bottom of said locker. That way water passes through to be pumped over, and the wear from hundreds of feet of chain coming and going only wears out the wood and not the glass.
I would add, you can get grated snap-together tiles typically used for garage flooring or a rubber grated mat that allows some air circulation & noise deadening. It's all in the details.
@@AustinBoil Those rubber gratings are a good solution once You found a way to have it keeping its place and not ripping of the hull. We once glued some with Sikaflex - did not what it was supposed to do. So we changed back to cheap meranti stripes again. Chain lockers are maintenance points on a boat laying on different roadsteads a lot. People tend to forget that.
Happy Birthday Mads. Your just 29 years and one week younger than me. Enjoy it while you can. I usually have to take a nap after just watching you do everything you do in just one week, week after week.
A belated happy birthday Mads. Everyday will be like your birthday and Christmas combined when you get Athena done and get underway enjoying your years of hard work.
Happy 40th Birthday! I just turned 40 mid January. I'm so happy to see things come together. Can't wait for your videos to pop every week. You are the most positive person on earth...I would of been so upset if I ran into half of the problems you ran in to but it sure makes for a great DIY channel. Keep up the great work. You and Ava have a great boat now!
Like many others, I’m totally invested in your “journey “ with Athena and I have to tell you, I’m getting really excited with how close you’re getting to the finish line. I’m sure there’s never really a finish line when you own a boat, but this is starting to look like a home rather than a project.
Happy Birthday! Your one day over 40, is my 76th birthday. I’m constantly amazed the with myriad of skills you’ve acquired, and your willingness to attempt almost anything.
Happy birthday Mads. I know I have lifted my standards when going DIY because of you so your excellent work ethic spreads across the world and I know here in Australia you are treated with high praise. Watching the refit of Free Range Sailing and then reading their comments section lots of people say “well, Mads would have done it this way..”. They went for fully soft shackles and dyneema and saved a really large amount of weight up top with no metal so I must go back to your new rigging and compare philosophies.
Remember, this awesome dude is a Software Engineer. We have a tendency to underestimate the necessary effort of our tasks. With a bit of luck, we may get two more years of this brilliant content.
Happy belated birthday Mads! Thanks for the videos and letting us be part of this! And concerning the watch - Autopilot control...there is no way I would not have one if I owned a sailboat. So cool! :D
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MADS! Cannot believe how long I have been watching you not realizing your age. Love to watch your meticulous methods, mainly because I am more like Dangar Stu in my building techniques. Your methodical precision is highly appreciated. Once again Happy Birthday!
Hahaa that door frame, oh what the heck! I'm dizzy with the progress - well done. Liked man cave number 2.... AIS I would normally have at the Nav Station... don't forget you need to be able to switch off transmission when you need to be incognito, usually via the plotter. Layout and cabling looks good, a small point is cable labelling, I found it invaluable when avoiding mistakes - it can get complicated. Moving forward! Happy birthday Mads.
Oh, Mads is an expert at cable labelling. Look back at his first “technical compartment” videos before he tore it out and strengthened the floor members. He even has a special shrink tube label machine.
Happy Birthday Mads! I have followed your journey since you bought Athena. Never i have posted a comment before but i felt that now its the time! Greetings and thank you for your content from Finland!!!
