There are two ways to play this, the method that she used and the other is the Diana Damrau version. Here we have someone who is used to giving orders, who has ordered many people's deaths and who does not give a single thought to what her daughter feels. Diana on the other hand give the scary beyond all belief version. Of the two, given the passions involved, I believe the Damrau version to be more correct.
@@oldfarthacks well when it comes to interpretation I agree that Diana is more convincing, she is scary and really conveys what she is supposed to, she also has better acting skills.
She looks so bored hitting those F6s. Like it’s nothing. She literally turns around and walks off the stage like she’s going on break for a coffee and donut. Damn, girl.
In her first Biography, ( end 70ties) she said literally about this role: "When I sing this in the "Stadsschouwburg" I always have the urge to take the tram home after the first aria, have a coffee and watch the news with my husband, wash the dishes and go back to to the last part.
Not even a single person except this brilliant lady was able to accurately replicate the part that starts at 2:06 It is supposed to be sung like she did here, sorta like la la la sound but not quite. Every other singer I saw sung that part with only soprano voice when in this part you actually have to use your tongue to create the sound. Props to this beautiful lady here, because it sounds extremely difficult.
Honestly, I first thought that she was lip-syncing at first then I saw her tongue and her throat movements. Then at 2:06 I almost thought that it was auto-tuned then I saw the year was 1971. Then I almost fell off my chair, seriously.
Ikr! But if someone is singing this and moving dramatically (whether that be walking, dancing, or bold facial expressions) it’s more likely that THEY have been auto-tuned, coming from experience in reality when you are hitting notes like that you usually can’t focus on rapid movements. Not scolding you or anything I just thought this was an opportunity to share my opinion :)
@@clue8569 yes, you have to be completed relaxed, and all the movement comes from inside. Also, she does not only hit the notes perfectly, but the sheer power.. oof
I was super impressed by her technicality! Those triplets at 2:06 are not an easy part of the aria (especially after hitting the high f's!) additionally, I think that inflection and specificity of notes was intentional. The entire time she's scolding her daughter and basically telling her she will be disowned if she doesn't kill Sarastro. Shes extremely cold in her demeanor throughout, and that perfection only adds to the quality of performing it that way. Just my opinion! :)
@@fransdany2452 It's absolutely insane how she makes each note so clear without slurring it like most singers who attempt this song. It's deceptively difficult, but the passage at 2:06 is hands down the most difficult passage in this piece.
This performance is right up there with Damrau’s to me. While Damrau was aggressive in the way she sang those trills, Deuketom’s Queen made it seem like she was laughing, mocking her daughter. Grade frickin’ A.
You don't know what the song about and why are they aggressively moving The song is about The mother wants her daughter to kill someone If the daughter won't She will be no longer her daughter Do you understand??? It's opera that's why they need to act It's not just singing There's alot of styles in opera ://
@@waterdragondennis1186 yes, opera is all about singing. you won't be able to pick Diana's facial expressions changes in a massive opera house, it would do nothing to your enjoyment. on the other hand, you would be able to hear cristina's fantastic voice all the way through and feel all the emotion coming from her massive, resonant voice
There’s a reason as to why this is considered Mozart’s most terrifying aria, and this performance is absolutely perfect. The stone cold, regal feeling of the acting perfectly portraying a Queen figure, the fluid, smooth flow from one note to another, it occasionally sounds so mesmerizing and yet so perfectly melodic it almost feels impossible for a human to have performed it. Perfection, truly.
I don't care She's done the best version. No one has ever topped her. I'll take technical precision and clarity over theatrics any day. it's what I hear not what I see.

@@devadarshan1547 Maria Callas never did this aria, at least not that I’ve ever been able to find. There’s a video on RUclips that says it’s her, but it’s actually Lucia Popp
You're so right, and yet what we see here is also superb, without any need of theatrics at all. I don't think she looks bored or emotionless like other people say in the comments. what I appreciate here is a much more precise knowledge not only about how to sing perfectly, but also how to act for the camera. This is not for the stage, it seems to be a film version and she knows it, so everything is in her eyes, cold and heartless, that's what the Queen of the Night is supposed to be. Just maybe a lot of people is used to more hysterical renditions like Damrau's or Dessay's.
I'm not sure what you mean by that, to me she shows the kind of total coldness and indifference you would need to cast out your daughter, but that's just me;)
I totally agree with Dutchy that her expressions reflect the stone cold heart of the character so it's not totally necessary for the Königin der Nacht to appear ferocious.
A queen should be like that, I see someones overacting like they are demon of night, remember she's the queen of night. Thought she's a villian, She must behave like a queen.
There are a number of comments below that she shows "no emotion" or "looks bored". The Queen here has no emotion. She is demanding that her daughter assist in destroying the man she loves and harming Zorastro. This is not a woman of emotion but an ice queen and should seem devoid of emotion.
I love that Deutekom is more muted and understated. So many Queens I’ve seen play her like a Disney villain by overacting, and I really prefer the domineering, powerful, and calm of Deutekom’s Queen.
While Diana Damrau acts this role well, and Edda Moser's take on this aria was robust enough to be featured on the space record on Voyager, I've got to say that Cristina Deutekom's performance is the best I've heard. The Queen of the Night's villainy sounds much more stronger and convincing with such a harsh, quasi-Wagnerian vocal tone.
It's her native Dutch that makes this possible. Therefore iI've always thought it strange that Diana Damrau's dictation isn't so clear, her being German.
@@SuusUSA Actually, Damraus pronunciation is the perfect one. But the ”problem” lies there as well. Since she is German, she cannot help but pronounce the words naturally and ”right” - which actually differs quite a bit from the ideal clear dictation in classical singing. Even as a non-German who has only studied the language I can hear the difference. Even though Deutekoms pronounciation is very good and I imagine everyone understands it - which is crucial in singing and especially opera - for German-speaking listeners it sounds a bit off. A native speaker cannot do that - and the German audience would be very unhappy if she did. German is also phonetically a very different kind of language than others.
@@flav2689 thats not even the problem. The problem is mentality and technique. Damrau is simply not as good. Period. A brit has no problems speaking american english dialect whereas americans have more trouble. British sounds are tougher on the palate. Easy to hard is well...harder than going from hard to easy. Same conceptually as shakespeare. Actors who actually understand what theyre saying can say the exact same words and you can understand it vs the guy flouncing the same thing and you cant even remember a single thing he said. Think of julie andrews english that is clear vs the guttural yorkshire or even scottish ones like katie mcgraths. Give someone difficult sentences (comprehensive level)to memorize. The one who clearly dictates and you understand it is because they understood what they were saying. The one who just says it and you got lost...means they have no idea what it means. Theyre just repeating verbatim and overacting for dramatics. The diction problem here is clear. Mentally one is better than the other. Technical skill level is involved too as well. And damraus acting methods even limit her vocal capabilities. Shes movimg around so much that she runs out of air.
@@FairyLotusUnicorn I’m afraid I totally missed your point. We were talking about German phonetics and dictation in opera - what does Shakespeare, various English accents and the connection between memorising and understanding some difficult sentences have to do with that? Maybe it’s just a language barrier but I cannot see your point at all, unfortunately. And sure, Deutekom was technically better than Damrau but that is also another topic - irrelevant here. The last sentence was the only one I could make sense of - acting like the way Damrau does, probably affects the breathing and so the singing and articulation.
I like the evil of the Queen of the Night to be a bit emotional and Diane Damrau can afford to invest more into acting while singing while Cristina Deutekom had to invest all concentration into getting the difficult parts sung properly, without doing anything else, so Diane has an edge here to my taste... but I have to admit that Cristina's triplets at 2:05 are the best I've ever heard. Each time I hear them, a chill goes down my spine, they are awesome! As a native German speaker, I have to say that Diane's pronounciation still has a few flaws, however. For example, when she sings "Tod und Verzweiflung", it sounds like "Tod und Verzwaflung".
I think one thing we went acknowledging is her very clear diction. I've never heard this song pronounced so clearly, and hitting every note as perfectly as she does, that diction isincredible. .
It’s definitely Cristina on 1st, Edda Moser on 2nd and Diana 3rd when considering their performances of the aria. All three added their own touch to it.
At +75 years of age and a professional musician for over 50 years, I've absorbed a great deal of many musical venues. I watched each of the above performances most carefully. In my opinion, Cristina Deutekom stands above the rest. Oh, the others are ALL fine professionals, bringing excellent acting and singing to their performance...but. I am judging "voice" only. Cristina's singing appears almost effortless in the full range of this aria which covers two octaves, from F4 to F6 and requires a very high tessitura, A4 to C6. Excellent Diction! Magnificent rendition!! Bravo, Cristina! How I wish she was alive today to receive accolades from this generation for the height of perfection she brought to those roles she sang! John
When Pavarotti was asked who was the best soprano he had ever heard he answered without hesitation “Cristina Deutekom”. I treasure my CD copy., While taste is subjective I agree with Pavarotti.
It's beautiful how different opera singers act the same role very differently. For example she was scary emotionless, while most of the other divas do the completely crazy psycho act.
This was a film and she was singing live. She couldn't move cause otherwise the recording of her voice would have suffered. That said, Deutekom was never a good actress but she expressed a lot just with her voice.
Spot on, guys. And to be frank, Mozart's sister-in-law was a poor actress. But her voice was unequalled. So this is just in keeping with the original cast! 😊
@@shop-a-holic3194 That comes from accounts of the time - Mozart's sister-in-law (Josepha Weber) commanded a very high tessitura, which explains the absolutely mad heights Mozart took her voice to. However, per the same contemporary accounts the voice had a rough edge, and she lacked stage presence as an actress.
She is the best of the best Queen of the night ever. No one can dare to challenge her performance on this particular role. Perfect voice for the character..

I've always loved Diana Damrau's version of this but I decided to look up different singers perform this and found Cristina Deutekom's version and OMG. 😮At first I wasn't sure because there wasn't the dramatic acting like Diana but I just watched and listened and was floored. So freaking good! When she got to the triplets my jaw was practically on the floor. I've never heard anyone sing like that. I also watched it again from the beginning after I was in shock from listening to her singing. I watched this as a whole and thought this performance was very clever. It felt more like this was a speech or monologue, just done musically. She was a queen issuing an order to her daughter. They let the drama be the order to have Sarastro killed which allowed Cristina to perform as a Queen, regally and majestic. So incredible and right up there with Diana for me, well maybe even a little above that simply for the incredible vocality she portrayed. 😎👍
Guilherme Hofman it's not really that pleasant sound musically (and for me) it's lack of legato which she was known for. the performance in general is amazing except this part when she sound like she is singing under the water or like turkey.
+Khalid Al-Thani Due to the score displayed I do believe that his part is supposed to be sung that way. It's not an ongoing sound that changes pitch, which is what others do, but isn't what stands written on the music sheet. Her approach is more precise and she doesn't struggle like others do in that passage. Edit: What I'm saying is that in this case Legato isn't what the music sheet asks the singer to do. I see a lot of dashes, but not a single arc.
Cristina Deutekom was and remains the best Queen of the night to date. I don't care one bit that she doesn't """act""". This is one of the most demanding things Mozart ever wrote and her precision is formidable. Besides, she has the timbre and the volume of a full spinto which suits the role incredibly well.
I love how serene and regal her expression is while singing. She is literally the pillar which Pamina orbits. People often praise sopranos who can act and gesticulate while singing, but remaining so perfectly still while singing seems to be much more difficult to me.
Still the best RUclips recording in my opinion. Her voice remains powerful all the way through, while some others rely on dramatic acting to make up for the loss of vocal consistency.
I do agree but just like to add that these days, acting in opera is far more common than 30 years ago. by the way, I own this dvd. don't forget to listen to the other song of the queen: o, zittert nicht.
Christina Deutekom sings the Queen of the Night. Diana Damrau is the Queen of the Night. Of course, Damrau had the advantage of hearing Deutekom sing and Deutekom didn't have the advantage of seeing Damrau act.
Cristina is a perfect Queen of the Night, because that is the stare of somebody who cares about nothing but herself, and would even pressure her daughter into killing the person she loves
"Cold steel is a hard solution I heard. And full of admiration!" The queen of the night sings without unnecessary emotions - imperiously and coldly. Deutekom has the correct reading of the role.
Impressive. I have seen it interpreted in a more passionate/deranged manner, and I love that, but this performance, impassible and cold as ice, is scary in its own way. I find it impressive that she doesn't even show the strain and effort of such high notes. It's majestic.
This is by far the best rendition I've heard being so effortless with seemingly even more range left in the tank if Mozart could have gone crazily any higher. After watching the Emily Cheung Volvo commercial a few months ago, I was intrigued with others and the bar was raised as I discovered Natalie Dessay, then Edita Gruberova. Now Cristina Deutekom stands alone at the top!
Agreed completely, her version is my absolute favourite. Seeing her sing and comparing the music to the bottom she almost follows it absolutely perfectly
You need to hear Edda Moser. Each Diva brings a fabulous interpretation. Madame Deutekom is my patron Deity in this role, but Edda brings the Perimenopausal Rage!
She doesn't need dramatic acting Her voice is powerful enough for that, if not too powerful which is terrifying and impressive at the same time Added to this is her imposing presence and diction If we compare her to contemporaries such as Diana Damrau or Sabine Devieilhe, who compensate for their lack of power with excessive acting, we realize that she has no need of dramatic acting.
A masterclass in technique. Look at the relaxation of the jaw, the vowels are internally created, minimal movement in the larynx. But the support she must have developed to do this phenomenal. As Pavarotti says it takes.10 years of very hard work to create an instrument like that and a deal of talent. Such a joy to see.
I've never loved opera. Like not at all. Somehow I saw this video on RUclips about 3 days. I don't know how or why but since then I come every day to watch it. This sound she made at 2:06 hypnotized me I can't describe the feeling...I tried to watch the others interpretation of the song and tho there are very good ones none of them comes close to this masterpiece. So now I don't know if I love opera or if I love this lady's opera 😅❤❤❤
Christina is the only soprano I know of that actually speaks German fluently (a lot of Dutch people do, it's very similar) and sings this song the way it was meant to be by Mozart. Because she understands what she sings. The "rolling r" she has is so beautiful. Everybody else sings gibberish blabla. If I listen to other soprano's performing this piece for me it is like listening to Ken Lee from Mariah Carey. Google it.
Cristina Deutekom was one of the greatest coloraturas of all time. Amazing vocal control and technique! The way she hits each note with crystal purity, in such a comfortness is phenomenal! "Der hölle rache" is her own aria for ever. Rest in Peace Queen of the Night.
Everyone says she looks bored, but what I see is her finding that perfect space and MAINTAINING it. I have trouble with that. I get too emotional and my facial expressions change and I lose my space. Watching her sing is a master class.
Damn, what a MAMMOUTH voice she has (I can listen to her singing anytime)! This is one of the most challenging arias in all of opera. In sharp contrast to the 'many' other leading sopranos performing it, Cristina's coloratura passages are done with such precision, perfection and with great ease. Her mouth barely moves as she conquers each and every note decisively. Who cares about the complaints about her acting, as I believe she is the 'perfect Queen of the Night.' I believe Mozart himself would be enormously proud to hear her sing this magnificent aria in this most entertaining opera, one of his many (genius) musical masterpieces, as she is just AMAZING, period! BRAVA!
My overall favourite performance by quite far. No running around flailing arms about. Delivered cold, calculating and powerfully matter of fact. Imagine a mother like that? Apart from the act, what a voice. I have not heard a match. Chilling.
What I love about this performance is that one can hear all the notes in the groups of 16th-notes and triplets. The other singers, although great, glide or swipe through them giving the impression that they actually sang the distinct notes.
I totally agree, especially at 2:05, most opera singers would cover this part with a lot of vibrato to make it sound like they hit all the notes, but Cristina here comes out clean. Respect.
I love that little gesture at the very hand where Cristina's raises her arm and makes a slapping motion before she turns away. My admiration for the way that she makes this look so effortless. Even though by this time she had really made this role her own.
I like how theres a musical score at the bottom, like imma be able to sing along with her XD

DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE THERE WERE TREES
“Hey Philiph look, a singing tree!”
She looks so bored hitting those F6s. Like it’s nothing. She literally turns around and walks off the stage like she’s going on break for a coffee and donut. Damn, girl.
Lol 😊🤣
Damned... i fell off my chair... for real😂😂😂😂
In her first Biography, ( end 70ties) she said literally about this role: "When I sing this in the "Stadsschouwburg" I always have the urge to take the tram home after the first aria, have a coffee and watch the news with my husband, wash the dishes and go back to to the last part.
The queen of the night doesn't have a lot of stage time, so she's going to do just that. 😁
I think this mightve been playback though, this was a precorded track, I found the track once and it was a studio version
It is god like
She is the only who is capable of this precision
Unsurpassed by eternity
Edda Moser rules as Königin der Nacht! Gorgeous, powerful, voice, wonderful coloratura.💐
I never heard it like this! Sounds like an exotic bird!! Marvelous!!
You have "then" disease
They had pitch correction back then. Autotune just made it easier.
Her straight face makes it more scary. It feels as if she's ordering something very normal to her; like making her clean her room or something.
For people complaining about the acting: for someone growing up with Queen Wilhelmina this is the most accurate depiction of a stone cold queen.
It's scary how much she looked like Wilhelmina indeed.

This performance is right up there with Damrau’s to me. While Damrau was aggressive in the way she sang those trills, Deuketom’s Queen made it seem like she was laughing, mocking her daughter. Grade frickin’ A.

It's opera that's why they need to act
It's not just singing

@@waterdragondennis1186 yes, opera is all about singing. you won't be able to pick Diana's facial expressions changes in a massive opera house, it would do nothing to your enjoyment. on the other hand, you would be able to hear cristina's fantastic voice all the way through and feel all the emotion coming from her massive, resonant voice
@@waterdragondennis1186 no it is not. the queen is meant to sound fierce, angry and dominant. Cristina is a perfect fit. Edda Moser as well
There’s a reason as to why this is considered Mozart’s most terrifying aria, and this performance is absolutely perfect. The stone cold, regal feeling of the acting perfectly portraying a Queen figure, the fluid, smooth flow from one note to another, it occasionally sounds so mesmerizing and yet so perfectly melodic it almost feels impossible for a human to have performed it. Perfection, truly.
I don't care
She's done the best version. No one has ever topped her. I'll take technical precision and clarity over theatrics any day. it's what I hear not what I see.
Yeah. But people nowadays didn't know her. So that's why they prefer the new one even though it's not good. I really love Cristina Deutekom. So effortless, the point is she's always singing that song already that's why it's easy for her to sing that song. And yeah she's a Operatic Coloratura Soprano. She famous back in the 19s
@@devadarshan1547 Maria Callas never did this aria, at least not that I’ve ever been able to find. There’s a video on RUclips that says it’s her, but it’s actually Lucia Popp
I totally 100% completely agree. I simply cannot listen to other versions any more.
I absolutely agree! Extremely technical and my favourite version
Her acting may indeed seem not the strongest here, but her vocals... just WOW. I think her acting is in her voice, and she sung the part so lightly!
I'm not sure what you mean by that, to me she shows the kind of total coldness and indifference you would need to cast out your daughter, but that's just me;)
Lightly ? You need to learn more about the opera.
Are you kidding me thats the perfect reaction to ask someone to kill a person. Heartless, evil and stone cold.

Best part! I've never heard this part being sung so purposefully! It's usually a legato type sloppy mess! Absolutely stunning!
Agreed! She hit every note! Those triplets are insane. I've never heard anyone sing each note like that before.
2:05 was always omitted to every video I've seen only on this piece I heard it. Or maybe it was another version of that
There are a number of comments below that she shows "no emotion" or "looks bored". The Queen here has no emotion. She is demanding that her daughter assist in destroying the man she loves and harming Zorastro. This is not a woman of emotion but an ice queen and should seem devoid of emotion.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It's also helpful for the coloratura technique to relax your face.
I love that Deutekom is more muted and understated. So many Queens I’ve seen play her like a Disney villain by overacting, and I really prefer the domineering, powerful, and calm of Deutekom’s Queen.
You obviously haven't seen Diana Damrau's performance.
Emman Padre I’ve seen more than one of Damrau’s performances. She’s just not my favorite queen...she’s in my top 5, tho.
I've never heard this song pronounced so clearly, and hitting every note as perfectly as she does, that diction isincredible. .
It's because she's Dutch and spoke German fluently. She understands what she sings. And she has the rolling r, which is also used in Austria.

John

mkyker but how do u know her voice? I guess his sister in law is allready death for a while?
@@shop-a-holic3194 That comes from accounts of the time - Mozart's sister-in-law (Josepha Weber) commanded a very high tessitura, which explains the absolutely mad heights Mozart took her voice to. However, per the same contemporary accounts the voice had a rough edge, and she lacked stage presence as an actress.

Rodolfo Lima How the holy hell could she do that ?? It's unbelievable !
She can cut glass with that voice.
Cristina Deutekom was and remains the best Queen of the night to date.
I don't care one bit that she doesn't """act""". This is one of the most demanding things Mozart ever wrote and her precision is formidable.

2:05 This is the clearest staccato I've heard. Almost all others transition to somewhat of a slide when they reach this part.
Google it.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA omg that reference, Im dead, and it’s funny cause it’s true
Cristina Deutekom was one of the greatest coloraturas of all time. Amazing vocal control and technique! The way she hits each note with crystal purity, in such a comfortness is phenomenal! "Der hölle rache" is her own aria for ever. Rest in Peace Queen of the Night.
Everyone says she looks bored, but what I see is her finding that perfect space and MAINTAINING it. I have trouble with that. I get too emotional and my facial expressions change and I lose my space. Watching her sing is a master class.
She's channeling Nurse Ratchet from, One flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and I'm scared to death, what a voice!
She has the most perfect and effortless performance. It sounds so nature in her voice. I list to her 10x a day if not more.
Chilling.
she is the best queen of the night, just giving orders,
like a true queen,no overacting, just the power of her voice is more than enough.
Respect.
This is my daughter's favorite aria. I have heard a dozen women sing this. ONLY Deutekom hits every single note. She truly is die Königen der Nacht.
Best Queen of the Night I've ever heard. The technique is incredible.
I love that little gesture at the very hand where Cristina's raises her arm and makes a slapping motion before she turns away. My admiration for the way that she makes this look so effortless. Even though by this time she had really made this role her own.
