    Some inside info: This is actually just one in the series of previews that were released. This being one of the latest.
    The main problem with theese is that the level-design - especially the textures was never really completed. They were just randomly placed which is clear to see. And the graphics in general is experimental. And yes, there is only one level and no title screen or game over or anything like that.
    I'm impressed the map-function were shown. Havn't seen anyone else found that.
    There is also an option screen (press 'o') where you can customise the keys. This game actually plays better using keyboard than joystick.
    And btw. The C64 is 1mhz and 64kb ram. :)

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 10 лет назад +1

      It's called super efficient coding being able too utilize the hardware at the lowest levels possible, without complex OS routines in the way like more modern computers have, but there is a programmers theory with a enough time, and effort, that you can make any computer run any task you want, but how will that task take?

    • @mspeter97

    • @Perff64
      @Perff64 8 лет назад +2

      Actually it dosn't use raycasting, as it was found too slow. So other ways to do it was found. ;)

    • @iiiiiifggffggffgfgfg
      @iiiiiifggffggffgfgfg 8 лет назад

      how did they do it?

    • @Perff64
      @Perff64 8 лет назад +7

      Well, it might be a bit difficult to explain, but in short this is how:
      Instead of a 2D map where you raycast from the players point of view, the map in this engine consists of a number of long walls going from one end of the room to the other. A wall can have holes in it, so what might apear as more walls in the game, can actually be one wall in the map data.
      The engine then draws each wall one at a time (cleverly of cause). This have some limitations compared to raycasting, but if the number of walls is kept low (like 15 or so), it can be done much faster than could be done with raycasting.
      It should be noted that the engine has a precalculated table of how a wall would look from any angle. Else this would be impossible. ;)
      Actually at some point we released a primitive level-designer tool so that people could experiment making levels themselves.
      WARNING: It's NOT in ANY WAY userfriendly, but here it is: mood.perff.dk
      /Perff

      @@Perff64 Interesting! This raycasting alternative, had it ever been described/done previously? Is there a name for it? If youns invented this, do youns have a write-up about it? Has it been used by youns or anyone else, since the last MOOD preview?

    This is pretty old but was a shocker when released. It's nothing more than a proof of concept really. As usual when someone creates something this promising, it is often discontinued soon after... Would have loved to see a full game.
    Steve Snake claimed he could do this with even higher resolution. I believe him because he made Kega Fusion and did program some C64 games as well.

    Although impressive for the C64, this is a very simple Raycaster,, and not remotely resembles the complexity of the Doom engine. Doom is quite a difficult engine to clone. A brilliant attempt by the programmers nevertheless.

    First thing I notice is it looks nothing like any version of doom I've ever played, and second thing I noticed it the misspelling of shotgun (shootgun). Made me chuckle. Still, it is pretty impressive in terms of what can be done on ageing hardware.

    Actually the C64 clock speeds vary, the NTSC versions are clocked at 1.023Mhz, and the PAL versions are clocked at 0.985Mhz, but the PAL machines can be modded with a switch to run at full NTSC speeds, but and vice versa, as some software/games/demos will only work at one speed, or the other, a good example are some of the cracked Giana Sisters copies we got here in the states based on the PAL version, would run too fast, and make them hard too play, because of the default higher clock speed of the NTSC machines.

    • @RetroGamerVX
      @RetroGamerVX  10 лет назад

      Commodorefan64 I have enough trouble with normal speed games, never mind faster macines lol

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 10 лет назад

      RetroGamerVX Lol, I don't blame ya, but in the case of games like Test Drive II for the C64, the CMD SuperCPU actually helps make the game more responsive, faster, and fluid, with no slowdown. I've never personally owned a SuperCPU do too the cost back in the day, but the small Commodore club I belonged too here in South Carolina back in the late 80's/ early 90's, one user had such a machine, and it really was a pleasure being able too play Test Drive II at it's full potential on the C64.

      +Blue_Pie_Ninja The C64 can use a "high-resolution" mode, which limits the number of colours to two in every 8x8 pixel area, but allows better resolution. Seems like maybe that would've worked better with this?

      *On a C64*. On a modern PC, going out to memory takes several hundred clock cycles if it doesn't fit in cache. Even L2 cache takes 10-20 cycles. A GPU is able to perform about 60 floating point operations for every texture read (pre-calculated value) it does. Figuring out how to take something like a texture and turn it into many floating point math instructions *speeds things up*.

      Just type in 'mood Commodore 64' and you can download the prg file for it. I use an sd solution to load up :o) I don't see any reason why it wouldn't run on an ntsc one :o)

      Thanks. I just tried it and it works on my NTSC c64. I had to ask though because some games just arent compatible between NTSC and pal. It looks really cool though. And your right the SD card really helps in this matter.

    Considering C64 can run this, 3D games nowadays should run on much lower spec PCs but apparently optimization - nahh why bother.

      BS. Modern games are incredibly well optimized. You can always do less with less; doing more with less is the hard part.
      This game uses precalculated tables to draw pixel columns at varying distances (as did wolfenstein 3D) this doesn't scale beyond tiny resolutions and does not allow perspective correct texturing of arbitrary triangles, doesn't allow texture filtering. The limitations are extreme (a dozen axis aligned walls or so at a time, all walls are vertical, everything is on the same level, all floors and ceilings are monocoloured).
      If I have counted correctly, the resolution is 40x52. A modern resolution like 1920x1080 is 1000 times as many pixels. The "standard" framerate is 60 FPS; that's about 4 times as high as this. In a relatively modern software renderer (e.g. half-life) you'd use one divide every 8 pixels or so and interpolation inbetween; That's not perspective correct, but close enough; lots of divides, lots of floating point or fixed point math. You can do less with less, but not more with less.
      16x trilinear AF requires 128 texture samples which are interpolated between in an ellipse for each pixel that is at such an angle that it uses 16x AF. Again, you can do less with less, but you can't do as beautiful, shimmer and aliasing free, non-blurry texturing with less.
      Modern GPUs can do about 60 floating point operations per texture operation. Developers use this to very good effect (remember what late 90's 3D games looked like? there were no specular, there were no per pixel lighting, no normal mapping, no nothing).
      You can do less with less; but you can't get the same quality with less.

      It's always easier to learn how to develop games on a specific set of components.
      That's why N64 games look way supperior to what you could run on an equivalent PC (4MB of RAM, 97MHz of processing power and no additional 3D accelerator).

    • @soylentgreenb
      @soylentgreenb 8 лет назад

      I strongly disagree about the N64. The texture resolution was so awful and cartridges so small that large portions of games were essentially left untextured (e.g. any kind of terrain texture had to be stretched so large and coloured so blandly that you didn't notice the repeating pattern). Correct bilinear filtering was a detriment with such low resolutions and just made everything look blurry. The lack of CDs were a huge limitation in other ways as well (i.e. all characters talked like "huh-huh-uh-huh-hu-uhu-huh" and threw up a text box on the screen).
      I much prefer the look of late sprite hardware (e.g. SNES), the original playstation or what you call an "equivalent" PC. You've arbitrarily chosen to gimp the "equivalent" PC with 4 MB of RAM, where as a 100 MHz pentium PC from 1994 would probably have had at least 8 and most probably 16 MB.
      On that PC (even without a voodoo 1, which was out at about the same time as the N64) you could play 3D and "2.5D" games that look much better than anything on the N64. E.g. Ultima underworld (runs on a 386 DX40), Doom, Decent, Quake, Magic carpet. The N64 is a lesson in not overextending yourself. We all knew 3D was going to take off, but 3D in the 1980's was awful and barely playable, chugging along at about 5-10 FPS (e.g. stunt car 3D or Starglider 2 on the Amiga) were as sprite based games were just cranking out frames at the full refresh rate. The N64 was too early out of the gate with bilinear filtering. They should have cheated more like PS1 and PC games of the time.
