used to be £8.99 DVD releases. these DC licenses have an RRP of £29.99. there's inflation and there's limited ability to accommodate value. half i can dismiss (so far) because of poor choices or masters, but looking forwards to ikeda's 'scent of a spell' and 'mermaid legend' later this year.
My release of One Cut of the Dead is from Third Window! Knew I'd heard the name somewhere, haha. I know what you mean by the stagnant nature of collecting. That's why I watch channels like yours, for the recommendations! I discovered Eureka the other day. I'd heard of them, but I was operating under the misapprehension that UK releases weren't quite as comprehensive as US ones. Boy, was I wrong! And now I have Eureka's entire catalogue to work my way through, it's an absolute goldmine!
Third Window is great, Memories of Matsuko was also one of the earliest non-English films I remember buying! the Third Window podcast is pretty interesting too, they talk about the films but also how the communication and licensing with Japanese directors/studios happens. Haven't seen any Shinji Somai but there's a few screenings coming up near me that I think I'll go to
I started this video thinking these films wouldn’t be for me or at least wouldn’t be the type I’d buy. But each of your descriptions interested me greatly 😅
And for your Yankee fans... It would be helpful if you could mention if it was region locked or not. Recently purchased the 4k version of Typhoon Club, and I am looking forward to watching it soon. I hope that the others aslo get 4k treatments.
Some Third Window releases are region A compatible, but definitely not all. So be careful. Of these I’m not sure, except Typhoon Club, which worked on my region A player
Great timing. I’m going to Tokyo this year. I’m hoping to get some physical media there. Wondering if their Blu-rays and UHD discs have English subtitles
nope. pretty much none of it. different market structure, no sale or return, small prints, very insular. heavy emphasis on rental possibly. international releases of j films rare + now often contractually limited due to desire to avoid grey imports at lower costs than their domestic releases.
Random stranger’s two cents… I watched the 30’s version before the 50’s. Silent films are not usually my go to choice, but I felt that the presentation of the silent film very much complemented the story in a way that the color/sound version didn’t. I could also be biased because that was the version I watched first! lol
Japan is my favourite country for film but my local hmv never have many third window films so not quite sure what to get, so i'll keep a look out for these because these sound amazing and I need to check these out
@@slave_to_cinema I think Hana-Bi will always be my favourite but I have love for many others. A Scene at the Sea is one that needs to be seen more! Sonatine is a classic too.
Want some new 4K blu-ray recommendations? Watch this next -> ruclips.net/video/jxU2lQSiV0U/видео.html
I've got "Luminous Woman", and I was absolutely floored by this extraordinary film. I've recently bought "Love Hotel" and I cannot wait to watch it.
Third window is such a great boutique label ~ bought all those directors company releases. Typhoon club + door = great great movies

Thank you for making this video. I’m in the U.S so I had no idea about these but just went on the U.K arrow site and ordered them all!

I only collect Japanese cinema on boutique blu-ray labels so this was a good video to see!
Thanks for watching!
I have never heard about this label and I love Japanese cinema!! Thank you 😮😊
Ordered The Crazy Family, heard a lot of good things about it 😊
Nice deconstruction of the new label, looking forward to picking several of these up!
Thanks for watching, Sam!

I also recommend the Japanese hidden gem The Face of Another (1966) by Hiroshi Teshigahara.
Great film!

Have a great time when you go to Tokyo!

In a recent video you recommended checking out Ozu's Floating Weeds, you recommend seeing the 30's or 50's version first?
I’d watch the 50s film and then go back to watch the original. I think his 1959 version is the better film but both are brilliant.
@@ElliotCoen I appreciate it Man! Looking forward to it.

Love Hotel sounds very interesting, I might have to add this to my watchlist. Standard blue cases though, I find blue cases to be quite brittle.

Elliot, what is your fav Takeshi Kitano film? Or top 3? Nobody really talks about him, yet we both share a love of his movies.

Are you doing a video on the October criterion announcements?
I won't have time now but the announcements have me excited!
Hmmm, not one of these is a movie that, if I were Japanese, would make me want to go to a theater. Not good for the culture.
Should we run all movies by you to check that they’re good for culture?
