I'd love to hear some wholesome stories about patients you've treated, who have gone on to live fulfilling and productive lives, if you have any at all. Does severe mental illness and personality disorders always stop people from living "normal" lives and becoming successful in their career of choice?

I used to be addicted to self harm. I finally got a service dog in 2007 and she trained me out of it. Wish people would take psych service dogs more seriously and so many people hadn't abused the label. They are better at dealing with suicidal/self harm than any therapist I've had. (sorry doc) Dogs don't have judgement or say stupid things that even psych pros do. I literally live for my dogs and they are why I've survived. This is a serious solution that psych professionals won't look at enough which is sad because they actually are really annoying and prejudice and make it all worse when people are in crisis. Hospitals are expensive time wasting crap that don't teach people to deal with it. It's demeaning and not healthy because if people need help being locked in an institution with other people freaking out is not good... police being involved is even worse because of what they represent. I've had terrible things said and done to me in hospitals and it was more damaging. I still have urges but the idea of calling for help is off the table. My dog knows how to respond. We lock the world out and wait out the bad crap. It's a good solution but for now I have to accept social stigma and miss being able to do a lot of things because of ignorance about it and again...those fakers with "emotional support animals" really upped the stigma. (that never should have been allowed...if the dog has no task and if you don't need it 24/7 it's a pet. Leave it at home)

Beneath all those grandiose narcissist jokes you are actually a caring, and dare I say funny 🙈😂professional. Thank you for being so honest with some difficult questions. Pleasantly surprised. Not had great experiences with psychiatry due to a very late in life adhd diagnosis (which I had to fight for many times)& possibly high functioning asd. Worked with some dangerous teenagers & loved it for many years. The key was easy 🔑 Speak to them with respect, firm but fair consistent boundaries, and never take it personally. No doubt some required doctors of your calibre & sadly wouldn’t have happened until adult crimes were committed. I am assuming that adhd was not taught when you were starting out in this career? If so, have you seen a change in recent years? Is there a difference between England and Scottish psychiatry training where Adhd is concerned?

Thanks so much for your honesty doc and I really look forward to reading your book. I sent you my address by private message on discord as well as the case I'd like to see you discuss.
I think what you said about being a doctor is completely true. The pay has gone down by 30% for consultants and 24% for JDs and it's still going down. I love psychiatry - I worked in a CAMHS PICU for a year before med school and tbh I was ready to decline my offer as I found out the truth about UK medicine right now. But turns out I really enjoyed psychiatry and I want to pursue a career as a psychiatrist. However I'm definitely going to considering training in Australia over the UK with all the current problems and especially because nowadays we have 100k worth of debt :/
My parents actually encouraged me not to do medicine but I was adamant because idk I just enjoy the subject so much. Maybe I hate myself or maybe it's just a calling. At the very least I know I have plenty of experience to back it up.
However I am also involved with DoctorsVote and we are trying to improve things through the BMA. We recently made a new ballot for strike action over pay official BMA policy for Junior Doctors! We are trying to improve things for everyone though and having a consultant like you help us would be great. If you'd like to help us improve things for doctors, restore pay and keep attracting the best talent into medicine, then please join us! Even just tweeting our infographics and your support would go really far!
Not enough consultants do so, and brush off the current issues as if they don't matter when they do. Your help would be invaluable.

Violent offenders would be more interesting than public figures. I do have a question, is the medication supposed to cure them or just make them more docile and easier to handle? The person who doesn't feel they have a problem will never be cured by any therapist.

Have to ask you about a case I’ve just seen?
A couple have been charged with 2nd degree murder.
Their grown up daughter who was autistic had died sometime ago & her body was in an advanced state of decomposition.
They had sat in the front room with body for a considerable time?
Salacious inventory of state of the body which appears to be normal decomposition?
Surly this is a psychiatric matter?
To not register or be able to deal with the death of a loved one is surly a severe mental health problem?
Just wanted to know if you’ve come across this before, feel sure it must be a recognised illness??

I'm sorry, but as a doctor it is inappropriate to dress how you like on your own channel, as a doctor; speaking on your work. You are privy to sensitive information, and should act respectfully in public because of it. If you'd like a career in comedy, Harry Hill managed it. Sorry, but it's a matter of respect.

  • @gorey4more837
    @gorey4more837 2 года назад +1

"Bullwark." Nice! You never hear that said anymore. Made my day. And the comment about your "guns" was just irritating. You're not in an office, in some professional building or institution, assessing patients or testifying. Why the need to dress "professional" on your own YT channel? It just seems trivial and judgemental. Hoping to hear my own question answered in the future. BTW, I like how you usually have a toy or something within your screenshot that reminds us that you are a father. It humanizes you, and it's a nice juxtaposition with your expertise in forensic psychiatry. Not just a doc, ya dig? 😂 Safety and good health to you and yours, Ominous Sohaminous. (Did I spell that right?)
