It's always a pleasure to watch squirrels foraging. I've been seeing Eastern Gray Squirrels very busy with acorns this fall in my neighborhood. Huge mast this fall!
This is very cool to see. I notice these green black walnut fruits in a park near me and now I see how the squirrels will take the effort to get to the inner nut meat.
I didn't know black walnuts weren't in FL! I've got one in my backyard (western NC) and I love watching the squirrels grab them off the tree. There's an incline behind my house and the tree is at the bottom, so I can see all the activity in the top half of the tree up close. Come to think of it - I don't really remember seeing them on the tree at all this year. Usually there's a good 3 weeks where the leaves are gone but the nuts remain and I get to watch the squirrels go at it. Either I was distracted or Helene knocked most off. Thanks for sharing!
I think they are up in North Florida. This is up in the Great Smoky Mountains were high in the steep mountains the black walnuts don't grow so I get a bushel or so from ones that just lay all over the ground down in the valleys and give them to my squirrels. I also brough some home to Florida so stay tuned for that. BB
Thanks for sharing the busy squirrel workers! Are they black walnuts? They smell so nice and citrusy. The husks are much harder to get off than the ordinary walnuts, which will slip off in a few pieces when they are ripe enough to split. It's surprising that the squirrels don't have black stains all over their faces and fronts - I learned to wear gloves to take off 'stuck' hulls.
When we lived in a house the squirrels would do this on our deck and it would leave stains all over. Wonder if that's how they came up with the idea of walnut stain on wood 🤔
That’s a lot of hard work for these little guys!
And they still have to chew through the hard shell to get the nuts!
It is, but it’s truly amazing to see what Mother Nature can do
Look at those little hands go 🐿️ I love this ❤️ Thank you!!
You are so welcome! BB
Strong teeth! 🌰🐿
What you do is amazing, being able to see Mother Nature do this is amazing, thank you for sharing this with the world ❤
Glad you enjoy it! BB

@MyBackyardBirding 👍
Never have seen that thank you
Was watching some squirrels transport walnuts from a farm, they go up from the farm to a railroad trestle and cross the street below 🐿️
"Preparing for the long cold winter," I live in Florida, and 70 degrees is considered a cold snap :) Seriously though, the squirrels are so efficient!
I brought some home for the Florida squirrels - we'll see how that goes!
@MyBackyardBirding It would be interesting to know if the Florida squirrels would react the same.
Stay tuned!
