  • Emil Farkas was born in 1929 in Zilina, Czechoslovakia (today Slovakia). The youngest of five siblings, Emil, like his brothers, excelled at sports from a young age, especially at gymnastics. When deportations of Slovak Jewry began in 1942, two of Emil's brothers, his sister, his brother in law and niece were sent to extermination camps in Poland. Emil, brother Dežo and his parents where sent to the Novacky concentration camp. Following the outbreak of the Slovak uprising and the entry of the Germans into the country in 1944, the family members were separated and Emil was sent to Sachsenhausen. From there, he was sent to Bergen-Belsen and then to Dachau. He was liberated in a village near the camp. In 1949, he immigrated to Israel and volunteered in the Air Force. In Israel, he continued pursing gymnastics, was a member of Israel's national gymnastics team, and coordinated the physical education program at the Haifa Technion's Bosmat school. Emil lives in Haifa. He married Eva, and they have two children and grandchildren.

Thank you for sharing with us your story. I praise God for keeping you, your brother and parents alive so that your story and the stories of others can and will be heard. I am at a loss for words. There is nothing I can say that truly expresses my grief and sorrow over what you and so many others experienced. I can only do my part to bring the truth to anyone who will listen. We cannot forget what happened we cannot let the loss and sacrifice of so many disappear in a whisp of smoke. I pray for God’s continued protection for you and your family. Shalom

Dear mr Farkas, thank you very much to share your story. Like you said, we need to remember what happened. By telling your story you make that come true. I will never forget what you told. What you endured and survived is enormous. You are one of the few that found his parents and brother back. I can so much understand you fainted when you saw your dad again. After all you went through, this was just to much. Thanks again for telling what happened to you. Because of people like you we will know exactly what happened. I will never forget. Warm greetings from the Netherlands.

It is on its way, and not only for Jewish people this time.
One cannot look at these times without seeing signs. Nor are the people of this time even as morally strong as those in the last century.

A very heart wrenching real life saga.
What made Germans so fanatic filled with hatred? God alone knows.
But Karma will and definitely hit them back.
Tables will be turned with the slogans Jedem Das Seine, Arbeit Macht frei towards them one day

@@lisalarosa4546Sadness then joy for certain, right? So many of his immediate family survived miraculously and through their skills in some proportion. I am only grieving that his sister and niece did not survive as I understand. I thought to add that perhaps his dear brother-in-law was murdered as well.
