Thanks so much. I have recently started playing rally sims with a h-pattern and have 0 clue on how to effectively do a handbrake turn while being in the right gear
As a driving enthusiast, I just wanted to say what a great video this is. You're clearly spoken and break things down nicely, with good around topic explanations.. Like using it to as a band aid or only using it for lower speed corners. I can see why you are a teacher. Keep up the great work :)
Major thanks Nate for putting in the time to make this, and just how much it means you'll never know. I'm entered for the rally cross here in August for BigNW and i have a lifted NA 2010 Forester. Obviously im not looking to truely compete, however, i really want to see what its best is and after rebuilding it for the last two years the weakest link is me. I see the principles behind getting through turns like this but for me I'm not sure if my one run is gonna pan well without alot of preplanning so any input is a HUGE help. I know in my Forester Sport mode allows me to shift by hitting the shifter up or down. Would the same practice here apply with it, specifically handbraking into the turn, hit down to first and then power out.. or am i really just out on the edge where no ones gone before
4:04 question cant you just let’s say instead of 2 gear before you handbrake and turn can’t you just put it in 1 gear instead of 2 then you don’t need to downshift after handbrake?
Took me a couple of videos to get to this one. So foot brake is used normally to reach “entry speed”, but then release foot brake, clutch down, turn, handbrake, release brake + release clutch -> throttle… got it I think.
Sir. Watched many videos on drifting, didn't understand anything quickly but you explained everything in 1st time thank you so much for this information video ❤️😍❤️🔥🫂
Do the DirtFish STi's have a center diff disconnect for handbrake turns? Just wondering how bad this would be for the drivetrain on a stock NA Impreza. Thanks for the great video!
I really have a question about the setup of this STi's center diff. Is this STi modified that the center diff will completely disengage when you lock the rear wheel with hand brake? There is no clear info anywhere talking about what the stock DCCD is doing for a handbrake turn. I read somewhere that someone tried a handbrake turn and almost ruined the center diff.
AWD hooning virgin here…I’ve only augmented rotation for FWD with the handbrake while in gear and RWD with throttle (never owned an AWD). I was wondering if for a hot entry, a standard double clutch blip into first (and fully engaging the gear) before pulling the handbrake would be quicker than the technique shown because it allows for getting on the power sooner and hypothetically braking harder by keeping rpm’s high coming down the gears while braking. I’ve only seen Dirt Fish instructors slipping in the 2-1 shift after locking the rears and keeping the driveline disengaged until rotation is complete. Is this an AWD specific nuance to avoid stalling out by locking the rears with first engaged, or can performance AWD systems tolerate the fronts rotating with the rears locked?
I’m also curious if full lockup is best on loose surfaces while aiming for heavy slip angle while still spinning tire is best on asphalt (either to avoid flat spotting the rears or because it’s potentially quicker)
Hello. My question is; How easily can i engage 1st gear after a hand brake turn? coz its quite hard for me in rally esp if i have a hairpin or roundabout on gravel as 2nd gear is quite weak to have a powerful exist.
I'd love to see more focused on these advanced techniques with rwd and fwd, as that's what most new guys are running , Of course you may have already done that and i may have overlooked it
Great video ! Does the handbrake (during driving) decouple the rear axle for the 2015+ STIs (with the electronic center diff) ?🧐 If it does, does it put stress on the drivetrain (except for the handbrake itself) ?
how can you brake with left foot in manual transmission. It's not natural. Also dangerous for motor. In same time you pushing gas and brake pedall. 5:15
@Davidxdlol I know it is certainly harder in rwd, and might need a bit of a different technique. But I have never driven rwd, and don't really know how do, so can't really help sorry
Karting drivers are used to break with their left foot because they only have 2 pedals in their karts: brake (left) and throttle (right). It takes some time to get used to do it if you're a normal driver, since the clutch pedal is heavier than the brake pedal, but practice makes perfect.

if the car is DCT will be the same timing to use handbrake?
Why do you use your left foot to brake?
How much ahead of the hairpin (approx) shall I engage the handbrake and initiate a turn on a dirt road?
As soon as the front of the car is adjacent to the turn and immediately after you've started turning.
Does this only work on dirt roads, I drive an STI and I'm doing an autocross event next week. Would this work on those turns?
It works best on loose surfaces. It's probably not the quickest on an Autocross.

gas and brake at the same time, that's the point and it suppose to be that way....
does granny shift help on sharp turns? would it replace using the handbrake?
What do you mean by granny shifting? It probably wouldn't be as effective as the handbrake.

If I do this in a regular impreza not wrx or sti, will I brake my tranfer case?
Not if you clutch-in before you pull the handbrake. That disconnects the drivetrain and allows it to move freely.
i remember when my cousin did a 180 handbrake turn in a fucking fiat panda on a empty road in the Poland countryside.
how do people brake with their left leg? i still cant do it cos my car would just yank me to the front and lose all the speed
Karting drivers are used to break with their left foot because they only have 2 pedals in their karts: brake (left) and throttle (right).
It takes some time to get used to do it if you're a normal driver, since the clutch pedal is heavier than the brake pedal, but practice makes perfect.
