  • In this video we show step by step fitting instructions on how to fit the snorkel / raised air intake to the new 2020 Land Rover Defender 110. This is the genuine Land Rover Defender accessory snorkel part number VPLEP0435. The original instructions say you need to take the door off but it can be done without removing the doors !

    Simon...I think JLR should run these fittings past you for practicality. You do this as a job and have much more experience than the desk designer man who did not get this product sorted out very well at all. I also do think that the quality of these fittings we are seeing is not that good ...yours would be much better and I guess they might want £250/300 for that snorkel. Another excellent video...keep up the good work! 🙂🙂🙂🙂

      Ah the classic "I clearly don`t understand how design and engineering for manufacture works" response. This part WILL have been installed by more people including design and prototype, prototype build, pre-production, production and service than you could shake a stick at. The part was designed and has been presented as I would expect it to be for line production as a set of parts for creation of a sub-assembly. It is a "completely knocked down" set of parts ready for assembly.
      I don`t know where all the parts come from, they may well come into the production plant in finished form for installation on the line, or they may come from multiple suppliers to the plant for assembly and installation. In either case the parts when parted out as an accessory may well be bagged and packed for Land Rover by an outside company (why do you think the spares used to say Unipart in the old days). This why you get a set of parts not a sub-assembly, very few volume manufacturers would waste money putting together sub-assemblies for other than line manufacture.

      Brian Launchbury Sir, I am not quite sure what your line of thought is but the facts are that if you go to JLR and buy a “Raised air intake kit” they supply you with a box of bits that JLR has approved as being suitable to be sold to a customer. Who, where from and what those bits are, JLR consider them fit for purpose. Hence when a very experienced accessory retailer goes to fit them and finds incorrect fittings, an oddly designed bracket needing careful modification to fit, that the instructions to remove the door are not needed and that the general standard of fit and finish is rather poor, I think it is fair to say that this accessory has NOT been test fitted many times nor properly checked for assembly. Simon is an expert at fitting such things...it is what Powerful UK does...if he has comments to make, I listen to him. JLR parts are super expensive...I was charged £500 for four rubber floor mats and a rubber boot liner which is frankly ridiculous. Simon has highlighted problems...JLR need to listen. 😐

      @@HQBProductions The issue for all major vehicle manufacturers is their sheer size of operation. This kit along with all after market kits and accessories has nothing to do with the manufacturing arm of JLR. It's the brainchild of the brand and marketing division in conjunction with sales. The input from the engineering and manufacturing division will have been minimal. You're right, JLR and others need to listen to experienced parts suppliers and fitters but unfortunately, that will never happen. JLR won't even listen to their own franchise dealerships so an independent has no chance. Both our sons are service techs for large JLR franchise dealerships and had the ludicrous situation of spending 3 of their 5 days at work replacing balance shafts in Evoques that were less than 3 months old while JLR production continued to install the faulty balance shafts on the production line. It literally took 3 years from the issue first being identified to JLR manufacturing appearing to do anything about it.

      @@HQBProductions Not sure what my line of thought is? They are the thoughts of someone who spent more than 32 years designing, installing and testing parts for a volume auto manufacturer. Sorry but I thought it was clear and simple.
      The parts in the "acceessory" box are what would arrive on the production line as a sub-assembly for installation. That is they are volume production parts. The parts in the "accessory" box are either the same parts loosely bagged, or a set of similar parts, out together by an external parts organisation.
      Whoever did the instructions may or may not have had access to the vehicle whilst doing them (engineering personnel rarely get involved in this process, the instructions often being done in some design agency). They aren't great, but having dealt with similar over the years they are not the worst I've seen.
      As I said in my previous post spares organisations charge for their services, I know that our old organistion applied a minimum markup of 6:1 spare to production price (for the same part from the same supplier).
      Parts designed for accessory fit are not necessarily designed to the same standards as production and often not designed to fit in the same way as production parts. In this case they were so bad luck but good business.

      Da Malat Now I do know what you mean about JLR not listening. Very briefly my 2018my Discovery Sport SD4 had a diesel fume problem from new..strong burnt diesel arriving inside the car when braking to a stop but intermittently. My dealer was very good and tried everything including new turbo seals, refitted the dpf valve to check it was aligned properly, they tested it for a month and yet, it didn’t make a scrap of difference. JLR raised a case...I had lots of very stilted automated messages from a rather useless liaison woman but nobody listened. Then when we were at the point of them giving me a refund for the car, I spotted something different about a 2019 car on display...the offside underbonnet sealing strip and plastic moulding were missing meaning that burnt dpf fumes were funnelled straight into the cabin air intake via the water drain moulding near the base of the windscreen. My dealer said some naughty words, ordered the part, fitted them in ten minutes in the car park and the trouble was totally cured! My car is NOT the only one affected but JLR would not admit any problem existed...I got some hot air auto composed letters but JLR did not even discuss or listen. Look at the seals on a 2020 model...they are everywhere...JLR knew but would not admit it. As for this air intake kit, JLR should remove it from sale and let Simon make his own...it would be vastly better!

    the snorkels were NEVER designed to improve wading height. they were purely to reduce dust in dusty environments. wading heights were ALWAYS limited by the height of the breathers in the gearbox, axles, fuel tank etc, and also (on Petrol engined versions especially, prior to ECUs) the height of the electrics (ignition system)

    Let us know if you notice a increase in wind noise? And do you think it seals on the fender to prevent water ingress whilst wading? Thanks again.

    • @alantd44
      @alantd44 4 года назад +2

      Admittedly mine was fitted from the factory (dealer) so I can't compare it to 'naked' but there's no appreciable wind noise. It's a neat looking accessory - most people won't even notice it but it contributes subtly to the off-road nature of the car.
      Regards sealing, it's not designed to increase the wading depth (there are probably too many other things to drown). Therefore it doesn't need to be sealed on the wing - after all, the previous opening was entirely unsealed! It's specified as a "Raised Air Intake" and not a "Snorkel" and is purely to reduce dust ingress to the air filter. 👍

    I ordered my 110 with the snorkel already installed by the dealer and, as I got it, I wanted to test its efficiency: I wrapped the upper part with plastic bags thus sealing the air intake and switched on the engine expecting it to choke. That didn't happen, on the contrary it went on running regularly even while accelerating.
    I told it to the dealer, they checked it out with LR and came back saying that the installation is correct and so it is its behavior (???).
    How would you comment it?

    • @L663

      Most of these are fitted by dealers - and if you read the other comments it seems they are making up their own ways to fit them !.... As i was told when i was an engineer at Sony...."The right may should be the easy way" this is the key to good design / a good process etc. It seems that the way its designed to fit is not the easy way... hence they find other ways to do things.

  • @bodgerbill3

    I fitted my snorkel today, very quickly supplied, thank you, Simon and team. A couple of observations: The top bracket is now plastic and requires different dimensions to the cutout, the top rivnut supplied is clearly the wrong size, I actually found one in my stock that fitted the pre-punched hole and used that instead. Your rivnut tool is far better than either of the ones I had so expect an order for one any day. I made a couple of plastic washers to retain the bolts during installation, they were still a challenge but much better than removing the door.

    It's not for show, your electronics might die but your engine at least will not die under water. Electronics on a new car should be quite well sealed, especially essential ones, so they might die after from oxidation from humidity or some ingress of drops of water but it will pull you out of a underwater situation you might be caught into.

    I won’t be a party to planned obsolescence. All the plastic and clips on the car will become brittle, fragile and warp within a few years. Any DIY mods will result in broken trims and panels. I think it is time for less short term consumerism and more lifespan quality. JLR is destroying its brand and will make an interesting marketing case study in years to come.

    Your Rivnut here in the states is called a Nutcert. There is a special tool to install them it looks like a large rivet gun. They come in many sizes. We mostly use them where you cannot weld a nut behind the metal to hold it steady. But you are correct the hole in the A pillar is too large for that nutcert.

    • @L663
      @L663  4 года назад

      Yes you are correct - i think there is a company that have the trademark for the word "Rivnut" and they normally go after anyone using the term .. hence the other terms like Nutcert etc. My favourite type are the hexagonal type that dont need a tool to insert but rely on you having a hexagon hole.... if only land rover had done that here... they did it on the Evoque side step mounting points !

      @@L663 Thanks for that. Yours looks a better fit than mine.
      I took a look at how they'd installed mine and 2 things are different:
      1) They've not cut the square hole at the top of the A-pillar trim but just drilled through and mounted the bracket on the outside of the trim. Minimal damage to the trim but it means the RAI stands off the A pillar slightly.
      2) They've installed the Rivnuts for the lower mounting into the car, not the RAI. SOMEHOW, they've managed to screw in from the other side - the heads of the bolts aren't accessible from behind the door - they're inside the RAI! Either they have Mr Tickle working for them or they dismantled the air box under the bonnet and reached through! Weird. It means. I can't get it off easily but it's sealed tight to the wing.
      Consequence of these is the RAI must be at a slight angle compared with yours so an uneven panel gap appears next to the door. Not a problem - just not as neat as yours.
      Cheers

    What is wrong with JLR designers? Most of this agro could have been avoided with keyhole slots. The accessory market was supposed to be a major objective with this car. I suppose its going to make the bits hard to nick, but that just increases the risk of damage to the vehicle.
