That Guy Named Luke because Izzo is a great coach... MSU barely lands any 5* recruits... and we were only #1 because we beat duke and it was winstons senior year (who was a 3* recruit btw).

Texas Tech had the best defense this year. I wanted them to win so badly, too. I’m bracketing them to win in 2020
Duke was wildly overrated. Very little HC offense other than Zion andRJ. Duke would have been hard pressed to win 2 more games had they pulled this out.

Blatty26 If Matt McQuaid didn’t sprain his ankle on that 3 point shot when we were down by three late in the 4th quarter, we would have probably won the game because we were on fire and made a huge comeback against the best defense out there. It was just bad luck on our part. I was hoping that if MSU didn’t make it to the final game, at least Texas Tech would win it all, but nope :(

Man the game where all the preseason greatest basketball team of all time that could beat the Cavs hype came to a screeching halt for duke.
When I saw this bracket I knew these two will play in the elite 8 with MSU beating them due to their experienced players
Duke has experienced players too. They’re just benched because their coach thinks that the freshman are better. I know you’re not making an excuse or anything, but I’m just saying that the people who say MSU is more experienced aren’t exactly being honest. Duke could have put experienced players on the floor too.

Class act both Coach K and Coach Izzo,,,, I have enjoyed watching their games through the years. I didn't get to see this game, had to work, but glad I got to watch it. Thanks for posting this. Those two free throws at the end, that's why it's important for players to practice free throws, there just isn't any bigger moment than that when it comes to the final seconds. When he missed the first one, it was obvious he tried to miss the second one and get Zion or someone to rebound and put back in, that ball wasn't meant to go in, but it did! I was happy for Coach Izzo and Spartans and Magic Johnson(my favorite NBA player of all time), but it hurt to see Duke fall, I've been a fan for 35 years. Now that the K era is over, not sure I will have the passion for college basketball anymore, hopefully, but right now, I don't see it or feel it!

Honestly against Texas tech when we were down by 3, McQuaid had a wide open three point shot. If his ankle didn’t give up, it would’ve been a tie game and a whole another scenario.

@@bradlewis6514 Cool! (I'm sorry it took me so long to reply to this). I was glad Virginia won the National Championship the year after they were upset by a 16-seed, it's amazing how things turn around. Winston was robbed blind in the NBA draft, he's in the G-League 😞
They did better with that team then the almost duke stacked 2018 roster of Jaren Jackson jr miles bridges, Winston, Tillman, and more

Well, as a Spartan, I have to say that after we lost to Texas Tech (who earned it) I was glad to see UVA win the whole thing. Everything I have seen about UVA says "class program" and yeah, we put you down a few times - but those were not the most rewarding wins because when it was over, I wished both teams could win. And while I don't hate Duke, or Coach K, it was nice to be able to put down these "one and done" people.
@@pdoylemi Pat, I'm not partial to anyone in particular, but when it comes to the ACC I'm anybody but Carolina! Your right about Duke with the one and dones, but it was also those one and dones coupled with the lack of team defense! Duke had no consistency at that end of the floor all season and like in recent NCAA tournaments (2016-present) it came back to bite them! U can have all the five star talent u want, but unless they buy into playing both ends, it won't result in a championship or FF appearance!

Agreed. It just usually takes some time to develop the discipline and instincts to play good team defense, no matter how talented you are, or how good your coach is.

Michigan State went 8 deep and Duke had 3 players. Granted those 3 players were great but Duke needed more contribution from other players.
This is a bittersweet moment knowing that the NBA and LeBron James were denied a national championship by an actually college basketball team

1:11:12 that was completely tre Jones's fault, instead of switching on the ball, he was more focused on staying with his man, which left the dude enough time for a open shot as zion williamson couldn't get there in time. That loss was completely on tre jones

Duke was hella complacent during this game
when it was 30-21 duke with duke on a 9-0 run and all the momentum, that's when K should have ran offense through zion for the rest of the half and dared MSU to stop it. then ran offense thru zion or the first 5 min of the 2nd half. could have put MSU away right then and there.
And coach k should’ve ran the same play that Zion scored to put Duke up 66-63 those last two possessions.

I think the announcers touched on something important without knowing it. They mentioned how these admittedly great Duke freshmen were making uncharacteristic mistakes under pressure and said that it is as if "they want it so badly". I have seen senior laden teams do the same, but they tend to recover and get their bearings. They all want that NCAA ring, but these freshmen knew they weren't coming back - it was their last shot. But unlike seniors facing their last shot, they didn't have the experience and maturity to deal with it. In terms of pure talent, this game was a total mismatch - Duke should have mopped us (MSU) off the floor before the first half was over. But MSU knew how to deal and these kids did not, and yet, they still almost won.

Plus, these games more often than not come down to two words: guard play. As talented as Duke was, their guard play was outdone by Michigan St’s.
