    For the mobile phone, you can buy prepaid sim cards for your unlocked phone. Costs 6 to 10 soles and add some credit. Also,be careful when flashing a $500+ phone in public. Just get the cheapest unlocked basic or smartphone before coming over, insert the sim into it and use.

    Thx for responding. "In a relationship with myself" is something i never heard before! It seems so lonely and pointless, but if youre happy, all is well. Happiness comes from giving, and you have given me kindness. God bless you!

      +plywoodmansion haha I guess it depends on your perspective :P but being just with myself is what is working for me atm. I'm glad I'm contributing something positive to the world. God bless as well!

    I believe that Yellow fever is required to get back into the US if there is a known outbreak. It's not required-required but if you have been traveling in a area with an outbreak it makes return much easier.

    Stef, thanks for making this video. One app that I highly recommend travelers use is called "Sygic Travel" previously called "Tripomatic". It's a travel planner APP that allows users to create their own custom itinerary and then sync's with their iPhone or iPad and provides directions between POI. I used this in Bangkok and helped me from getting lost in a city where I couldn't understand any street signs. The only requirement is that the user obtains a local sim card with a data plan. Hope this helps and hope to run into you during my stay in Lima. Cheers & Happy Travels!!!

    Always carry a business card from the hotel or hostel that you are staying with, especially if you don't speak the language.

    I am traveling to Peru from the US in about a week. As of now, there are no vaccines that are required by Peru or the United States. However, hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines are highly recommended as they are transmitted via contaminated food and water, and yellow fever is highly recommended if you are traveling to certain areas at certain elevations, especially the Amazon.

    I'm visiting Peru in October, very excited! I'm 5ft1 so I'm sure I will feel right at home ;) I don't really need my phone for any reason while I'm traveling, so I was thinking of bringing my (3-year old) smartphone but just to leave it at the hostel so I can use the wifi at night to check reservations or whatever.

    • @StefsPeruTravelTips
      @StefsPeruTravelTips  8 лет назад

      +MissKriekentaart haha yes, you will probably feel like a giant sometimes! :D Sounds like a good plan about your phone although I think it's a lot easier to carry around smartphones these days because they're a lot more common. You're much less likely to get robbed for a three year old smartphone than for the latest iphone and so long as you carry it in something you keep on you at all times, it should be okay to take it with you as well.

    Hola, Very good information and I will be taking a trip down to Peru this summer. What is your thought about having a translator if I don't speak Spanish?

    • @StefsPeruTravelTips
      @StefsPeruTravelTips  9 лет назад +2

      Hello there Connor Jose! Sorry to be getting back to you so late. I have had my channel seriously abandoned 😔 Long story but I haven't been in Peru since the end of last year. If you did come to Peru then I really hope you had a great time. I don't think a translator is necessary. Lots of foreigners get around without knowing the language. It would be good to know some basic greetings, numbers, directions though. In tourist areas the locals usually know a little English but not a whole lot. You have to be careful when you get quoted on prices because you might get charged more for being a foreigner.

    No need for the correction. You were right the first time. The HEPITITIS vaccine is recommended. The Yellow Fever vaccine is REQUIRED for traveling to the jungle. At least it is for Americans. The State Department website says if you don't have it, they will vaccinate you at the airport in Peru, though I don't know how they will know if you are planning to visit the Amazon.

    • @StefsPeruTravelTips
      @StefsPeruTravelTips  8 лет назад

      A lot of expats tell me Yellow Fever is strongly recommended and not required. They ask you when you cross into the border or at the airport I believe.

    • @briantravelman
      @briantravelman 8 лет назад +1

      Stef's Peru Travel Tips Could be. The State Department website isn't always accurate. Or maybe it's only recommended for Americans. The U.S. government is very paranoid. LOL

    • @StefsPeruTravelTips
      @StefsPeruTravelTips  8 лет назад

      Totally paranoid! lol I don't worry about that kind of stuff. I'm more of a "germs are good for you" type of person and when it comes to more serious things like malaria or yellow fever, idk, I just don't think I will get that kind of stuff and don't think about it anymore. Maybe I'm irresponsible :P

    • @briantravelman
      @briantravelman 8 лет назад +1

      LOL. Some germs are good some are not. I'm kind of the same way. I'm one of those people who's always like, "It won't happened to me." I don't even get flu vaccinations anymore. LOL But there are some diseases I do not want to catch. It's kind of weird, but I'm actually more cautious at home than I am abroad. Abroad, I just want to explore and try new things, so I let my guard down a little and do things I don't normally do at home. And I trust locals too much, which isn't always a wise idea.

    • @StefsPeruTravelTips
      @StefsPeruTravelTips  8 лет назад

      Glad to hear you don't get those anymore. I think they're a bunch of BS to be honest. I feel that so long as you drink clean water, make sure your food is prepared in a clean place and just wash your hands after touching weird, dirty stuff, then you should be pretty good to go. Yes, locals can be really awesome and helpful but you sometimes have to exercise caution.

    Hey Stef! I'm a sophomore in college planning on studying abroad in Cuzco this summer because I'm minoring in Spanish. Is there anything specifically that I should plan to check out in Cuzco? Or other suggestions? I'm fairly proficient in Spanish, as this is the 7th year that I've been studying the language, so it's safe to say I won't be completely lost in conversations. I'll be living with a host family, and we will also be learning a little Quechua while we are there. We also are planning to visit Machu Picchu, and apparently volunteer within some of the indigenous communities. Overall it appears I'll have a very diverse set of experiences while I'm there and I'm quite excited. Thanks for the video!

    • @StefsPeruTravelTips
      @StefsPeruTravelTips  8 лет назад +2

      Hey Joshua! Umm, the standard things to visit in Cuzco are Machu Picchu, Sacsayhuamán, Pisaq, Ollantaytambo, Salinas de Maras, Moray. You can also see about going to the rainbow mountain. Some places offered the trip at just S/100 but it's an all day thing that starts at 3am and the altitude is more brutal than Cuzco. I'm sure you can probably see about going to the thermal baths in Aguas Calientes I believe. You can check out the animal sanctuary at Ccochahuasi. They hang around the fountain in the main square. That's basically all I can think of. Oh, you can always do Ayahuasca there with people you trust obviously. Hope you have an amazing experience! You're so lucky to be able to learn some Quechua. Everyone is bilingual there and it seems like Quechua is spoken more than Spanish most of the time. Happy to hear the video helped you!! Good luck!

      Thanks so much!! I really appreciate it! I won't have much autonomy as I'm studying there with others from my university and we have many of the days mapped out for us, but in the afternoons and evenings I believe that we are free to explore on our own!

    hey stef, can you do a video about how to find wifi in peru? i am also a youtuber and im afraid the internet connection might not be fast enough to upload videos

    • @StefsPeruTravelTips
      @StefsPeruTravelTips  8 лет назад +2

      For fast upload speed, Starbucks is amazing! I don't really feel comfortable making a video on this subject just because I mainly work from home so I don't scout out wifi spots and my phone is a bit messed up so I don't really get a wifi signal unless I'm smack dab next to the router. What I've seen from other youtubers who have come to Peru, youtubers that have hundreds of thousands or even millions of subs is that good internet is a struggle here....unless you're at Starbucks! Or at a great hotel that's not in the middle of nowhere and has a great signal.

      I don't understand what you mean by "pure" Spanish. Spanish from Latin America IS a bit different from Spanish from Spain, if that's what you're saying and every country has certain expressions, vocabulary, etc that is native to that place. That's how it is all over the world.

      I have known of couple that don't speak the same language and yet they still make it work. I'm sure in time, you could learn each other's languages or find another language in common, especially if you're looking at well educated women. They probably know English quite decently. You'll find a way to make it work. Best of luck to you!

      mike kozakowski word to the wise... Be extra cautious when it comes to social media and dating sites. Not all but some of them are fake profiles and purposely bait American or European men in order to gain confidence and when meeting in person in Peru, there is a risk of kidnapping or theft. Maybe if you can afford it, have security with you the first time or until you're comfortable or maybe meet at an establishment hat has cameras and or security. Someone actually got in touch with my family in Peru using my social media account and told them they wanted 30,000 dollars since they had me tied up even though I was in the US... Be very cautious of posting where you are and who follows your account. Maybe even make your profile private and only followable by friends.

    Hola Stef,
    Thank you kindly for your videos. I am planning a trip to Peru and find them informative.
    I wanted to share with you something about electrical standards. I believe you were correct telling us it is 220 Volts. But am I mistaken or did you say it is also "50 Watts"? The important thing to tell folks is not Watts but cycles-per-second, or the geeky term called Hertz.
    When we use Watts it is a measure of how much is used. In other words a hair dryer uses a lot of electricity, maybe 1000 watts. Compare that to charging a phone which might use 25 Watts or less. Mostly we can ignore Watts unless one does something silly like plugging 10 hair dryers into the same outlet.
    The most important thing to know is Volts. If an appliance that uses 120 Volts is plugged into 220 volts it can explode or catch on fire. Here is a link that gives information on Peru's electrical standard:
    goperu.about.com/od/planningandpacking/a/Electricity-In-Peru-Outlets-And-Voltage.htm

    • @StefsPeruTravelTips
      @StefsPeruTravelTips  8 лет назад

      Hey Frank! Thanks for your comment. Did I say "watts"?? Oh dear! I meant "hertz." Oops! I will go back and listen to this video to make the correction. Thanks for pointing that out! I appreciate you taking the time to write out your message with an explanation. Have a lovely week!
