  • In this HVACR Training Video, I show how to use the SMAN460 Digital Gauge Set to Check the Refrigerant Charge on an R-22 System with a Piston Fixed Orifice. We use the Superheat Method and I show how to Manually Input the Indoor Wet Bulb and Outdoor Dry Bulb Temps as well as how to Wirelessly read the WB and DB in order for the SMAN to calculated Target Superheat.
    I show correct charge and describe low charge and overcharged scenarios. Supervision is needed by a licensed HVACR Tech while doing this as Experience and Apprenticeship garners Wisdom and Safety.

    Great video Craig. I really learned a lot. I have one question for you. Would it be possible to take subcooling readings as well as superheat readings without hooking up your gauges to the condensor unit. I took a HVACR class about 8 years ago and my instructor said that was one of his biggest mistakes he saw technicians doing. He said that you should first take your superheat and subcooling readings first, figure what the system is doing, and what it should be doing. Once that is established then you can proceed to connect your gauges. By hooking up your gauges each time you are constantly introducing air and non condensables into the system. If you have one technician after another doing this. You will cause other problems to the a/c system. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks for all you do.

    I have a fixed orifice r22 system that was just changed over to r407, would I determine the superheated and charge level any differently?
    Also had this been a variable orifice system would the target subcool be that is specified on the name plate for r22.

    Yo A.C I recently bought the Sman 460 . I'm having doubts when I use it for a vacuum though as in im not sure why when I shut down my vaccum and valves why my micron reading keeps climbing way above 500 . Could you make video on the Sman 46o and all its functions . I think field piece is this best .

    • @acservicetechchannel
      @acservicetechchannel  5 лет назад +1

      Hey Sean, I have heard of others saying the vacuum gauge leaks. I honestly do not use the SMAN460 or any other manifold gauge set when vacuuming. I keep them out of the equation for the very reason you are speaking of. I think of the SMAN460 more for the availability of using wireless indoor wet bulb readings compared to the built in micron gauge. Otherwise I would just use the SMAN 360, thanks and you should call Fieldpiece about that in order for them to rectify it. Thanks and let me know how you make out.

    • @acservicetechchannel
      @acservicetechchannel  5 лет назад +1

      With the yellow jacket gauge sets yeah we usually keep one set for use with each type of oil but I don't expect people to have 2-3 of the SMAN460's. You could blow it out with nitrogen for each use or keep two sets of hoses, one set for POE and one for Mineral oil. We do what we can without going crazy, thanks David!

    hi, r410a system ( with fixed orifice) with equalized pressures of around 200psig. But once compressor starts the low side drops to 50 psig while the high side goes up to 300psig. I checked superheat was like 80F and subcooling was 2F. Does this mean the system has leaked out all the refrigerant? Does the 200psig equalized pressures means there's refrigerant in the system? thank you.

    ac service tech this is a little off topic. I was reading modern refrigeration and AC and it stated " the liquid recovery method should not be used on all systems. Do not use liquid recovery on either heat pump systems or systems with less than ten pounds of refrigerant. " Can you interpret that for me ? Not understanding why that would be an issue at all....

    • @acservicetechchannel
      @acservicetechchannel  5 лет назад +2

      I believe they are just talking about about recovering with a self contained recovery unit. Three things, it may not be worth recovering as a liquid only since there is a small amount of it in the system compared to larger systems. Also there is quite a bit of liquid in the accumulator which is not connected to the liquid port. Most smaller recovery machines can't handle liquid recovery only but just saturated refrigerant but larger recovery machines would work for liquid recovery. It makes sense to recover liquid out first on systems that have several hundred pounds of refrigerant inside but not on small units with less than 10. Anyway, that is what I think they mean without reading the context around the statement, thanks Jacob!

  • @mark.r8900
    @mark.r8900 2 года назад

    hi, my r22 suction saturated temp. is below 32F (around 20F). i tried to add some refrigerant to bring it up past 32F, but it won't go up. The low side pressure remains the same BUT the high side pressure rises. Do you think my filter drier is blocked? i see frost on the output of drier but not on the input side. i tapped at the drier and the low pressure drops to 0 on the low side. the unit has a piston . thanks.

    Is the superheat wet bulb chart that is usually by the rating plate at the condenser on split systems universal? Because there has been times when I see them rubbed off due to weathering.

    • @acservicetechchannel

    Hi. I had an instance today that was confusing to me while trying to determine required superheat. Indoor WB=58 degrees; Vapor PSIG=60; Vapor line temp=47 degrees, outdoor dry bulb (temperature around condenser) = 96 degrees. There is no intersection of 58 WB and 96 dry bulb on the chart that gives a required superheat. I was using a Testo 550 digital gauge set. Domestic unit has fixed orifice. Am I missing something? Thanks.

      It may be possible to install a compressor jacket around the compressor on the inside of the unit. It is basically fiberglass insulation inside two pieces of black plastic this forms a bag that is Velcroed around the compressor to quiet it. The compressor uses the refrigerant flow to cool the compressor so it won't hurt to cover it. There is not much to do with the fan unless it is unbalanced or the metal is rattling, thanks
