I don't see any reason why not. Spinrite is non-destructive. Depending on the size of the disks though Spinrite 6 may have issues with larger drive sizes. 6.1(coming soon hopefully) should fix that problem
Hello there, I am in the process of recovering external hard drive which is giving CRC error inside the disk management console. I came across your video and ended up purchasing spinrite software. I am using the software via oracle virtual box and unable to see any other hard drive other then my C Drive. I am not really good at doing technical stuff but i have made this far with searching things online for the past 6 plus hours. I would seriously appreciate if you could just assist me how can i make my external to showup in my Select Drives and Partition Menu. Thank you!
Hello there, Spinrite is really designed to be run on baremetal physical devices booting from a media such as a USB stick. That being said, I see no reason why it wouldn't work via virtual machine. You would need to make sure you are passing the physical drive thru to the VM you are running. (By default I think only the VM hard disk is present) Really your best result will be to attach this external drive to an offline machine and try booting Spinrite from there as then it will have direct access to the drive. NOTE: You can grab the current 6.1 Pre-Release via this link if you provide your receipt ID: www.grc.com/prerelease.htm Good luck!
Hi. Thanks. Can Spinrite 6.0 work with AHCI SSD M.2? I hardware diagnosed my computer, it's says no issues but Device Manager sees my AHCI SSD, on the Disk Drives category as: "Unknown Device". When I update it, the Update (the one whereby your click that gear looking icon on in Start then Update and Security) launches but it's a black blank window.
Hi there. As long as the BIOS on your machine can 'see' and read the device, than I don't see why not. You 'may' need to connect it to an external enclosure such as this one: www.amazon.com/Sabrent-Type-C-Tool-Free-Enclosure-EC-SNVE/dp/B08RVC6F9Y for Spinrite to see it.
@@brewcitygeek I have some drives I want to get data off of, but I am a little turned off by the fact that I can't find when this application was last updated. Are we talking 2004 here since the last update? Drives have changed a lot since then. @notta3d I believe Spinrite has a 30 day money back guarantee. You could always request a refund if it doesn't end up restoring your data or if the disks are too far gone. www.grc.com/cs/licenseinfo.htm

Ok so I have the spinrite iso and I got a fresh 5tb and want to use spinrite on it before use to make sure everything's kosher, then I need to use it to attempt to recover 4tb from another hdd, which I'll try to transfer. So, I see you've said it doesn't work on larger drives but the friend who recommended it said he used it on 1tb which is fairly large, worth a shot? And I'm running SR in virtualbox, any advice on how to get it to recognize that USB exists? There's a few tutorials that are largely unhelpful and I'm attempting to bumble my way through it right now, so any help is appreciated.
I "think" the current limit on drive size is 2.2 TB..... Worth a shot, but I think the sizes you mention are too large. As for getting SR in Virtual box to recognize USB, I have not tried that setup. I have an older desktop that I can still boot SR up from a USB drive that I use to plug my drives into and run SR that way
@@brewcitygeek thanks for your help, I can't figure out how to make it run so for now I'm trying some program called lazesoft. Hopefully that works. I THINK I got it to recognize the USB but it keeps running into another error when I attempt to use 4 and 3 (within 4) on the new drive.
Great video! I found your RUclips channel while searching for spinrite videos. Would you be willing to do a colab with me about Spinrite? I have a completed level two with errors on the screen that I can display through RUclips. I’d like to make a video with you and I discussing what we think the on screen logs mean.
Great tutorial. Thanks. Just one question to help me get my head around this before I purchase. Does Spinrite recover the data and essentially repair the damaged disc so it becomes usable to retrieve data off once completed? I had thought it must recover data and transfer to another disc. Thanks in advance. (I have a corrupt 3TB disc from a ReadyNAS which I need to hopefully retrieve data from) I have done a test using EaseUS Recovery and it has found over 31 000 files (6131GB) which is weird because the disc is only 3TB. I am confused. Alot of the file names have also been removed in the scan and show generic names eg. FILE82.MOV, FILE83.MOV etc. I have heard Leo speak about Steve's Spinrite for many many years so would prefer to try this option rather than pay to activate EASEUS. I am hopeful it will be a better solution. Perhaps it might get the file names sorted too?
Exactly. It isn't a miracle worker by any stretch, and if the disk is recoverable you had better grab the data off quick. I have had it recover file names as well
@@brewcitygeek Thanks for the reply and further advice. Both mirrored disks in my NAS corrupted so hopefully between the two scans it might get what I need. Cheers
Another query please. I have purchased Spinrite and set it up to scan but got the following message when I selected the 3TB RAID drive to scan "Invalid Partition for Drive Size. This partition exceeds the size of this drive as defined by the systems BIOS or BIOS Extension. You should NOT PROCEED to use Spinrite on this drive until you have verified and corrected the disparity"
@@ivanhartshorn Hmm. It looks like this error is discussed here: www.grc.com/sr/kb/badbios.htm Do you have another machine you can you can pop the drive into and scan it there?

He is an asset to the community, that is for certain.

What about a deep dive on SpinRite 6.1 with a corrupted drive, it's apparently massively faster, but just as thorough. Thanks in advance
Do you think I could put my spinrite thumb drive in my ageing unraid server and do #4 on each disk? (It won't bother any of my current data will it?)

I don't think this current version can do drives of that size. The next version, 6.1 reportedly can.

Probably not with this version. This one seems to have issues with larger disk sizes. I would guess that is forthcoming in a future release.

Don't buy Spinrite 6.0 for any modern computer and large harddisks. It will not run or crash.
It definitely needs a refresh, that is for sure. Maybe he will finish 6.1 someday...
I've been hearing messages from Steve that 6.1 will be ready soon...for 10 years now.
