    Ankara looks incredibly modern. Were it not for all the Ottoman style minarets all over the place, the city would look like a North American city with its glass and steel high rises and modern apartments.

      I had the same feeling. It's a very modern city because it has grown mainly in the last few decades. However North American cities do not have medieval fortresses at their downtown districts!

    Viktor, you have made my day. lol!!! I had a blast watching you maneuver in traffic, and getting your putt-putt through all those expressways without being hit or slammed into by other idiots. I'm amazed that these speeders get away with the wild speeds in the middle of the city. Here, you obey the speed limit signs, or you get dinged with a hefty fine, starting at $725.00 CDN. There has been some habitual speeders that have been fined over $2K and lost their license permanently for their frequent visits to the court for their speeding. I don't go out much now, and I really don't mind too much. This way I don't get caught for my "lead" foot (means heavy as lead ore).. lol!!! Have a wonderful week!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😘

      Speed limits are treated as a gentle suggestion in Turkey except in places where there are speed cameras (and people know those). Signage is a bit random, though, so if they were to enforce the rules, people would be getting tons of absurd fines -even those who are cautious.

    8:15 Its more that there are no central empty spaces open to development left since those empty areas on Google Earth are not open to development! When the government tried to open them to development there was huge backlash. The area between Ankara Blv. and Sakıp Sabancı Blv. for example is protected forest area. The area between Ümitköy and Beytepe junctions? Same. Hacettepe and Bilkent Universities also have big forest areas but most importantly METU forest streches all the way from D200 to Lake Eymir (which is under the responsibility of METU as well). It was an explicit decision from the 80s that saw growth directed westward where the terrain is much flatter but those protected areas created this disconnect.
    The dependency on car transport is due to the plans on building metro lines always being behind schedule in Ankara. I mean I recently saw a headline from 1974 proclaiming that construction of first metro lines would begin that year but it took until 1992 for it to start. Even now with plans updated in 2013 we are behind schedule but at least there is some effort from the new mayor to restart building transit.
    11:00 also shows the inadequacy of our transit system since ever since its inception, Ankaray was supposed to have its terminus not at AŞTİ but at Söğütözü (and was going to be extended from there) with a transfer to M2. Its tunnels, rails, power lines etc. are all built too, but since when building Ankaray, Siemens & AEG forgot to include the possibility of adding Söğütözü to the signalling system when its station got built alongside M2 in 2014 the AŞTİ-Söğütözü portion of the line remains unused. Only when the Dikimevi-Natoyolu extension is built and the signalling and rolling stock of Ankaray is replaced will Söğütözü be operational.
    If you ever decide to come back to Ankara, I would also suggest 1071 Malazgirt Blv. & Anadolu Blv. which together with Mevlana Blv. form the main north-south corridor.

      Thank you for such a deep-dive into the urban development of Ankara! I hope I can visit the city again.

    Ankara is actually so modern and it doesn’t look like an European city more like a northern American city though

      So many interchanges makes these stroads distinct from the ones in the US and Canada. Dear God this chaos is awful!

    • @RoadsofEuropeverreme
      @RoadsofEuropeverreme  2 года назад

      I wonder whether a stroad with several signalized at-grade intersections yet a proper signal cycle at a better planned environment would actually work better than interchanges every now and then and a few signals making traffic to go from 80 km/h to 0.

    Do you think Ankara clean city or not, like the street, transportation, and highway ?

    • @RoadsofEuropeverreme
      @RoadsofEuropeverreme  Год назад +3

      I found Ankara to be reasonably clean for European standards. However, I'm sure there are much cleaner cities out there, especially in Asia.

    Those electronic signs that act both as destination signs and as government ads about road safety... I guess?
    I don't know how many people missed their exits because of that, tho.

    • @RoadsofEuropeverreme
      @RoadsofEuropeverreme  2 года назад

      Most of the time there's a conventional sign right after. I say most of the time because the sign for the exit after the tunnel was only electronic and switched between a road safety campaign and an actual direction sign. Signage in Ankara is definitely a bit off though I've seen much worse.
