Another great demonstration and review Joe! You were already dripping with charisma, but the cassette t-shirt catapulted you into the upper stratosphere ... JOE COOL! 😎🎸
The AudioScape crew killing it as always! If you're reading this Joe, I've got a pair of the 500 series V3As, and I think you do too. Have you noticed any differences besides the way nicer control panel and large VUs?
To my ears three of the absolute best sounding audio gears have been the DW Fearn EQ & Compressor and the Knif Audio Soma! And these are not clones of any previous vintage original, they are unique, silky, high resolution and as musical as it gets!
Ive had the UERI version of this (sold because screw paying to keep repairing them), and I really like the LA3A's. Its fast on attack and release, but not like 1176 fast. Just perfect fast. What I REALLY like is that it'll release fast back to 1, but then takes another second or so to get back to zero. So its like a stepped release. Awesome on compressing reverbs due to that also.
Great review! Looks and sounds amazing. Glad you showed it on several different types of tracks. As a side benefit this video also doubles as a great LA-3A tutorial for folks with the plugin ❤
I have an LA2A, but this sounds quite tasty. I have the LA3A by UAD as a plugin, but will always take the hardware if available and the price is right. I will keep my eye out for this one, because AudioScape makes great gear. I appreciate how Joe demoed different genres to elucidate his point.
They have the same unit in 500 series format (V3A) if you only need mono- or you can link two together. Certifiably amazing and stomps any of the plugin options IMO.
Vintage, classic sound with a modern twist and reasonable price of entry. Audioscape is the Lexus of the audio industry providing the equivalent of a Rolls Royce with a Lexus window sticker!
Sounds amazing -- I have a Golden Age Project Comp-3a that, for the price, does the LA-3a thing quite well. This would def be an upgrade with dual mono and stereo. Thanks Joe.

Yeah, the golden age units are half the price. I’ve never tried their compressors though, only the pres and microphones. Would be nice to compare the DA3A to the COMP-3A.
That may be true but Golden Age has changed ownership and I've emailed the new owners twice about a mic and haven't heard back. I'm confused about who they are, and I'd say buyer beware on any Golden Age stuff at the moment...

Joe, right now we're using an 1176 to hit those fast transients, going into an LA2A to slide in and add it's bit of magic. Would the DA-3A add value to this chain? I can definitely justify adding one for other sources/busses if not.
I have been waiting for this! I have a lot of higher end hardware compressors but no LA3. I just couldn’t justify the price. Even the Black Lion is meh….. but THIS!…. Oh heck yeah…..
@@InTheMixJoeCarrell yes. As long as patents or copyrights are not infringed on when these copies are made. And you don’t have to wait 2 years like you do for a Stam copy. …which are also spectacular.
Sounds really cool. I hate to say so but I’m actually kinda confused here…I thought the D3A comp by AS that they’ve had out for a long time was their recreation of La3a, along with the 500 series lunchbox version. So are those based on some OTHER comp?? If not - if those were also supposed to be la3a remakes - then what’s different in this one (except the obvious 2u / appearing more like original)? Opto Comp and Rev F from AS are among fav compressors I have, and I’ve long been intrigued w/3A…
You are correct they have had a 500 series version for a few years. That is also great. I have two of those. Now they have the traditional look version as well
10:58 Little bit confused about some of the choices, is it really had if an off beat jumps out when nothing else is happening? I guess it may be different because you muted the slide guitar - but I like a little movement. It just seems today's taste is towards evening everything out - I love the time when Rickie Lee Jones and Laura Niro gave their performances, so I do love me some dynamics.... (PS: but also maybe the RG is a little low in this mix, you seemed to have lifted it with the LA3A)
The mix automation levels and some other processing was removed so that we could focus on the sound of the compression. So that is really the only thing that we should be listening for within the demo. Thank you for watching 🎉
You absolutely could use just a few pieces of outboard and track through compression and EQ during the recording process If you were doing just a few instruments at a time. I typically like to record through high-end microphones, preamps etc. Since a lot of records nowadays are required to be mixed in the box for recall purposes, that high-end color they get from real transformers and tubes goes along way to making the plug-ins shine. But when I can mix hybrid using plug-ins and hardware I am a very happy man 😂
@2:54 seconds when we first hear the DA3A, the guitar clips and distorts in the left channel. It does not clip in the prior section with no compressor. Could you explain if this is the compressor adding the clipping or is this the converters that are being hit too hard? Thanks for the review. Very excited about this piece of equipment. 😊
Ok, the guitar clips and distorts at the same spot in both takes. I'm commenting as I'm watching. Only 3:43 in... Huge fan of audioscape and own half their catalog. Not hating, just listening and sharing if no one heard it.
No audible clipping or distortion while we were recording so it would have to be the capture converters or streaming compression algorithms. Thanks for watching 🎉
There’s nothing quite like watching a video of a mix that blows the doors off of anything I can do, only to repeatedly be told how everything isn’t record ready.
Automation and some other processing was removed to exhibit the properties of the compressor. The mix decisions that would follow are irrelevant for these examples. Listen to the characteristics of the compression ✌🏼✌🏼
