- Who was Benjamin Franklin really? Franklin, starring and executive produced by Academy, Emmy, and AFI Lifetime Achievement Award winner Michael Douglas, is now streaming on Apple TV+ apple.co/_Franklin
Based on Pulitzer Prize winner Stacy Schiff’s book, “A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America,” Franklin explores the thrilling story of the greatest gamble of Benjamin Franklin’s career. In December 1776, Franklin is world famous for his electrical experiments, but his passion and power are put to the test when - as the fate of American independence hangs in the balance - he embarks on a secret mission to France.
The drama also stars Noah Jupe (“A Quiet Place”) as Temple Franklin, Thibault de Montalembert (“Call My Agent!”) as Comte de Vergennes, Daniel Mays (“Line of Duty”) as Edward Bancroft, Ludivine Sagnier (“Lupin”) as Madame Brillon, Eddie Marsan (“Ray Donovan”) as John Adams, Assaad Bouab (“Call My Agent!”) as Beaumarchais, Jeanne Balibar (“Irma Vep”) as Madame Helvetius and Theodore Pellerin (“There’s Someone Inside Your House”) as Marquis de Lafayette.

My favorite of all the Founding Fathers. He went to France and "brought home the bacon" for our infant nation. Without the bold courage, relentless determination, bulldog tenacity, vast intelligence and prodigious wisdom of Benjamin Franklin, the United States would *NOT* exist. I hope this Apple-TV series is the long-overdue visual tribute he so richly deserves. With Michael Douglas as executive producer and starring in the role, it should be spectacular.
Well said. I’m surprised more people don’t know how France basically won the Revolutionary war for us and we got them back in WW2.
True…. Along with Thomas Jefferson shortly after.
@@brandonsimmons1695 Most people do know that without French and Spanish help the war would not have been won. At least that's how the history is known in the UK and Europe, maybe the history is understood differently across the pond - which would be understandable I guess because the Revolution was a marvellous achievement and I say that as a Brit.
Salty John Adams noises!
Yes, early American diplomacy at its very finest
One thing you can always rely on Apple TV is the visuals.
but it looks generic so what are u talkin about?
Almost every show nowadays has good visuals so to me it is not much of a achievement
Yes, the lighting, the costume, the set, all of it looks beautiful
If you think almost every show these days has good visuals, then you don’t know what good visuals are 😬
they certainly know how to spend money even their lowest budget shows look so good
Glad to see Douglas in the lead. An actor his age, starring in a production this big is quite rare.
Not really.
Agree - not rare at all.
TRAILER STARTS NOW
No, it's not that rare.
What? How are you the ignorant that you think that’s rare? Anthony Hopkins is in transformers films and Rebel Moon, Douglas himself in giant marvel movies. Ian McClellan and Patrick Stewart are always in gigantic franchises.
I’m genuinely stunned by how you could say something so wrong
This show truly stands out for its artistic depth and historical accuracy. It's refreshing to see a show that values substance and educational content, offering more than just entertainment. Every episode feels like a step back in time, thx to the brilliant performances and meticulous attention to detail.
Historical accuracy with a Black women ?
Interesting casting choice. I remember Tom Wilkinson and he absolutely killed it. (RIP). Interested to see how Douglas portrays the icon of American history.
Thank you. I just checked it out. Tom Wilkinson as Benjamin Franklin seems to be the perfect choice. I have to rewatch John Adams because I barely remember it.
Not very well - Douglas initially looked the part, but his acting is rather weak
im scared
@@garyc1384 I think he's the best part of the series, actually.
Appropriately, "Il n'y a pas de compte pour le goût!"
Dude had such a remarkable life. that it's shocking how long it's taken for there to be a big screen adaptation about Benjamin Franklin.
It's not a big screen effort. It's a TV min-series. And there have been others that revolved around Franklin.
Ben Franklin seriously had main character energy. What an incredible life he had led
@@stevenweikert7062 Of course. But in 2024, movies and television are indistinguishable.
I have been waiting for Michael Douglas to get a role worthy of his abilities, one he can sink his teeth into. His incredible talents have been squandered for far too long. I cannot wait to see this!
It also helps that he executive produced this too! A lot of people tend to forget that he began his career actually as a producer before becoming big as an actor. In fact, his Hollywood breakthrough came as the producer of ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (1975) which won him the Best Picture Oscar as producer.
Great point, he is a great Producer, and yes I remember OFOTCN. What an incredible movie, it stands the test of time. It has been in my top 10 for most of my life. I could easily have a Michael Douglas Marathon night, it would be difficult to choose just a few movies, as he is so good. Love him in 'The Game' too. @@axr7149
Maybe he's turned down lots of roles? It's not that an actors talents have been 'squandered', often they turn parts down.
Traffic? The Game? Falling Down? King of California? -- I can keep going.
@@axr7149 He's the exec producer? That explains the awful choice in casting himself as the star.
Apple TV is the gift that keeps on giving
I'm really surprised with all of the good content on there
Unless it's specifically stated, it's getting harder to tell from trailers when something is a movie, a mini-series, or a full tv series.
I still can’t figure it out, is it a movie or series? They just keep referring to it as “a drama”
@@stepheneckert4006 It said right in the trailer that it's a limited series
@@wildbill4496 ah, TOTALLY missed that! Thank you
That's because all trailers are the same now. Same type of music and editing that doesn't (hopefully) represent the product.
Michael Douglas is a great Choice, he has range to play Benjamin Franklin but i hope they Will bring to life the humanist men that Franklin was.
The production looks expensive 😮
all of apples productions are great quality!!
All filmed I. France in the actual places, no green screens or filming in other countries!
Let's hope it's at least half as good as the John Adams HBO miniseries was.
Same writer as John Adams, so it’s got that going for it.
This version of Ben Franklin in France seems so much darker than the one portrayed in the John Adams series.
@@jackanaples That may be so, but Ellis based his John Adams script on the magnificent biography by David McCullough. I suspect this one will be a lesser effort.
@@stevenweikert7062 FRANKLIN is based on the book ‘A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America by Pulitzer Prize winning author Stacy Schiff, so I guess we’ll see.
@@stevenweikert7062The FRANKLIN miniseries is based on the book A GREAT IMPROVISATION: FRANKLIN, FRANCE, AND THE BIRTH OF AMERICA by Stacy Schiff. Like McCullough, Schiff is also a Pulitzer Prize winner, in addition to many other honors she’s received for her work.
Being that her book isn’t a biography but instead focused on a specific time and goal in Franklin’s life, I think it more likely that this miniseries will be superior to JOHN ADAMS. It already has a far more dramatic premise from the start.
Apple suddenly came into the movie/show business and has been killing it ever since. Really impressive how they deliver good stuff every time...
Netflix have allot to catch on
I’m glad they are making a show about Benjamin Franklin because he was one of the important founding fathers and he was a brilliant scientist
The Cinematography is stunning. Looks like a painting.
I will never understand why anybody hasn't made a Napoleon/Franklin-esque gritty movie about George Washington.
totally agree and I wonder the same thing for a film about Louis XIV
Philadelphian Native an Agree. Father of America an American Military an Hollywood shuns him.
Me: can’t wait for a respectful and honest look at one of the greatest men in American history.
Franklin: AUSTIN DANGER POWERS.
Apple TV+ has been on a roll, man! Quality products! It’s becoming up there with HBO. Netflix is definitely outclassed by a long shot in quality.
Shakespeare with Denzel and Coen, Scorsese with DiCaprio and DeNiro... yep
Halfway through and this has turned out to be very, very good.
1:58 Bro is about to literally dive right in! 😆
🐬🏊♂️
There was so much more to Benjamin Franklin's life than just his time in France.
Oh yeah?
He was the ultimate chad
Very happy to see a first-class actor like Michael Douglas and it is interesting because with him on board this series, it will be much more interesting and exciting. IMHO!
Anything with Michael Douglas is gold
Great movie, all American must see this movie. Proud to be an American.
It's not a movie. It's a TV series on AppleTV.
Loving all the historical shows recently! Manhunt, Masters of the Air
Watch this people it's stunning !it's watching this tv series it's like seeing a painting of this era become a live !
So well done
Wow! This looks excellent and a story never told from Ben Franklin's perspective. Douglas will kill it, no doubt!
What's ur family bussiness.
Michael: We make movie icons.😅
Long live Michael Douglas!!!!! ❤ I want to see it so badly.
Michael Douglas is freaking awesome im so glad he is back
saw an add and immediately wanted to watch it.
Luv michael Douglas since the 80s, dunno about casting him for this role being slender w a full head of his magic hair just throws all off for me
Exactly, he just seems so out of place for the role.
He also never even once wears the famous coonskin cap that Franklin wore during his entire stay in France. Sometimes filmmakers need to actually crack a history book-- or at least watch a Ken Burns documentary-- before writing a screenplay.
Yeah he’s not fat enough!
WE LOVE YOU BENJAMIN FRANKLIN!!!!😢
This looks Amazing !!! And Michael Douglas is in it !!! That just makes it much better !!!
"You're up to something" "I would not claim otherwise" - YUP, that's Benjamin Franklin to a tee!
Good timing, maybe this will help to remind us in the West and in the US especially, what it means to have a democracy (that it is a privilege, and a hard won privilege at that), and why we must fight for it - and help other democracies around the world - lest the very idea of democracy, freedom and rule of law will be quashed.
Looks good, I can't wait.
They absolutely should have named it “Benjamin Franklin” go get more people to watch. I had no idea it was about Benjamin Franklin until I saw the trailer.
This is so well done.
Enfin une série historique ! J'irai voir !
This is a very beautiful movie that touches the soul
Just wow. Definitely want to skip work today and start episode 3!
Wow, two Franklins on Apple tv+!
Time to watch John Adams series again and then this! Great to see Michael back again. Hoping to Michael Caine in here somewhere as a Brit....
Can we get some more trailer drums next time? Cool thanks.
Interesting series!
Learned in grammar school about him going to France.....and what he did...part of American History in school!!
First and foremost Benjamin Franklin was a huge flirt, and THAT is how he got what he wanted from the French. Yes, his mind was brilliant, and yes he was quite shrewd. But it was his charm that won them over, and Michael Douglas can certainly pull that part off 😊
I am happy to see him play again. Want to see him more on movies.
Such an honor to see Douglas in a period drama. Cannot wait!
Why is it exactly an ''honour''? Maybe a joy?
Noah jupe!!!!
When Franklin returns: “And what did I miss? 🎶🎶🎶 And what did I miss?”
“Mr. Franklin some would say you were the sexiest president ever” I will def be watching this right after the office Franklin episode! 😂
can't wait to see this!
OMG does Michael Douglas ever bring-it in this role!! Enjoyed his performance immensely, whenever I think of Ben Franklin, I will visualize Michael Douglas from now on 😊
The real BF must be flattered lol
This is awesome. I love Michael Douglas
It's a painting comes to life!
Could be entertaining, though Tom Wilkerson in "John Adams" is gonna be hard to beat! 😎
Seems so
Finally! A Good, educational, intellectually stimulating tv show
Thank you
I like watching biopics of talented people.🎉
the scene where the king of France welcomes Franklin made me laugh. Their king is ridiculous. Even if it’s not true and he wasn’t like that it still made me very happy that the series demeans their king all the time
Great show!
This looks amazing!!!
The wonderful and legendary Michael Douglas. Awesome. Will be tuning in.
Good Lord 🙄 do you know anything about him? His views, his friendships? If you did, you wouldn’t call him wonderful
Can't wait!
Gay Actor Michael Douglas is my favorite actor, I can't wait to see what he does next!
I believe it will be worth my wait..
Ahh. I was recently thinking and hoping there would be more historical period shows like John Adam’s, sons of liberty etc. Feels like it’s been a while. Will watch anything about Ben Franklin!
Oh this looks GOOOOOOD! Michael Douglas for me is the best in the business.
I really like Michael Douglas in movies. He has great presence. He has been missed from big productions like these as the lead. This show seems to have really good visuals, and nice writing, but I didn't see Benjamin Franklin here. I saw Michael Douglas being kinda miscast. Prove me wrong, series.
Am gonna watch this just because of Michael Douglas
Bro, this should be a FEATURE FILM! It's got Oscar written all over it!
Apple TV+ in one word: quality.
the full story is on/in the capitol rotunda
I like this trailer so much
Sevdiğim kategori heyecanla bekliyorum yayını
Couldn’t get past the first episode 🤷🏻♂️
Did you know that Benjamin Franklin invented the wood burning stove? Even though it's also called "the Franklin stove", I just learned this bork
Looks amazing i will watch
This looks fanfkntastic!!!!
Super !
Looks like he's employing the Kominsky Method in this role.
France "The British will defeat you. It will cost us, it will cost you more."
Colonies: Laughs in Francis Marion
I hope they get this right!
Love how he has an American accent, which didn't exist at that point. Both parents English.. he would have sounded more like a Geordie...
his mom was born in the colonies bud. try again.
@@raudeloruna2600 How long do you think the American accent took to develop?
I have to agree on this, I nitpick but I know he wouldn't have sounded like Michael does here. Americans sounded a bit more "west country" English with a rhotic accent in this period.
@@laerwen Yes the accent was a weird combination of hampshire/west country. If you know a hampshire accent, you can hear where the American accent came from. Very similar.
@@laerwen probably sounded closer to the John Adams miniseries?
Hey, it's Franklin 🎶🐢
This looks good. And Apple should have given Sofia Coppola's project a budget as well.
Franklin More Franklin!
Ok, Im In. This looks like Michael Douglas is swinging for the fences here.
j'aurai bien vu Paul Giamatti l'incarner...
Kesinlikle izlenilmeli harika bayıldım ❤
Is this only on Apple TV ?
This is perfect for Michael who deserves a it.
Looks promising.
Yall should watch TURN: Washington’s Spies. Five seasons amazing show!!!!!
🇺🇸 proud
I can see they brought the Napoleon’s visual team back.
Super🔥
NOAH JUPE LOOKIN CUTE AS EVER😍
Super
