After two decades as one of the most beloved and enduring musicals on the stage, Wicked makes its long-awaited journey to the big screen as a spectacular, generation-defining cinematic event this holiday season.
Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Emmy, Grammy and Tony winning powerhouse Cynthia Erivo (Harriet, Broadway’s The Color Purple) as Elphaba, a young woman, misunderstood because of her unusual green skin, who has yet to discover her true power, and Grammy-winning, multi-platinum recording artist and global superstar Ariana Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman, gilded by privilege and ambition, who has yet to discover her true heart.
The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Glinda's unflinching desire for popularity sees her seduced by power, while Elphaba's determination to remain true to herself, and to those around her, will have unexpected and shocking consequences on her future. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The film also stars Oscar® winner Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University’s regal headmistress Madame Morrible; Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers) as Fiyero, a roguish and carefree prince; Tony nominee Ethan Slater (Broadway’s Spongebob Squarepants, Fosse/Verdon) as Boq, an altruistic Munchkin student; Marissa Bode in her feature-film debut as Nessarose, Elphaba’s favored sister; and pop culture icon Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
The cast of characters includes Pfannee and ShenShen, two conniving compatriots of Glinda played by Emmy nominee Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live) and Bronwyn James (Harlots), and a new character created for the film, Miss Coddle, played by Tony nominee Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman).
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights), Wicked is the first chapter of a two-part immersive, cultural celebration. Wicked Part Two is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 26, 2025.
Wicked is produced by Marc Platt (La La Land, The Little Mermaid), whose films, television shows and stage productions have earned a combined 46 Oscar® nominations, 58 Emmy nominations and 36 Tony nominations, and by multiple Tony winner David Stone (Kimberly Akimbo, Next to Normal), with whom Platt produced the blockbuster Wicked stage musical. The executive producers are David Nicksay, Stephen Schwartz and Jared LeBoff.
Based on the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is adapted for the screen by the stage production’s book writer Winnie Holzman and by legendary Grammy and Oscar® winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz. The Broadway stage musical is produced by Universal Stage Productions, Marc Platt, the Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone.

They have also work with Stephen and Winnie. I have high expectation this is not only an Oscars winning movie but something touches our hearts like the one stage musical did

@@sethzarandona2325 I am VERY MUCH on the fence after the "Popular" line. We'll have to wait and see, but that was just...no. All of Elphie's lines were *chef's kiss* though. I'm still not sure about the very last riff, but it definitely sounds better "in context" than when they first introduced it in the teaser.

Edit: alsoooo I want to clarify that I actually love Ariana’s vocals. She has amazing range. I just really truly believe her signature style doesnt showcase her full potential, which I feel is a disservice to her talent. But hey what do I know, she’s the famous one and I’m not 👀
She did sound very "pop," not Broadway in that clip of her singing "Popular." The jury is still out on this one for me, because of that.
@@Thespyanlet’s remember this movie is the boardwalk stage play. You sing very differently you are live on stage and have to express all the way to the back of the room. Very different from soundtrack/moving singing

@@Thespyan To be fair, the music of Wicked is inspired by pop music... That was Stephen Schwartz intention when writing. So either way, if you're backing out because of that then it's your lost cause.

Dr. Dillamond is like an actual goat? Not a half-human half-goat? Was not expecting that at all, but I’m here for it!!
In the original book I think there were several Animals that were able to speak and the such, not necessarily in full anthropomorphic form though... then again, as you know, he becomes more of a traditional animal further into the story... maybe its related to that.

I have always seen him as a real goat. Its just that its so hard to portray one like that on a stage.
Hey hey! Just to add two cents, yes Dr. Dillamond was always an actual talking goat. All the talking animals of OZ are the animals they are supposed to be. The thematic element here behind the talking animals is very similar to what happens in CS Lewis’ Narnia series. Basically if people (using animals as the symbolic representation) are treated a certain way they become that way

I forget how good Ariana's comedic timing and charm is. I'm so glad she's back in her acting era. Also Michelle Yeoh always slays!

Omg hearing Ariana singing Popular is giving me both throwbacks to her cover in 2014 and childhood nostalgia of LOVING the wicked musicals! So excited! ❤❤❤
I want to go see it so bad but I know I’m going to be crying. I watched the play with my grandmother when we went to London back in 2008. I will never forget that night. It is one of the best memories I have with her. Now 16 years later, I’m married with a child and a house. She is 80 with a lot of health problems now. I still make an effort to see her every week and keep the good memories alive. I try not to cry because that time in my life is over, but I’m grateful that time in my life happened.

I feel the exact same way. Saw it for the first time on Broadway in 2006 with my father, who always encouraged my love of musical theater. Saw it four times since then. A cultural touchstone of my adolescence. He's in his 70s, has trouble walking, etc. But I have a feeling I'll be seeing this with him, multiple times. I wasn't convinced by the teaser a few months ago but I've watched this trailer three times now and can't stop crying. I think it's the catharsis of it all, after nearly two decades.
On the first second I saw Cynthia is playing Elphaba, I knew that it’s going to be Good for good!

I love Cynthia. She is refreshing to see on the big screen. I can't help but see Cat Valentine with Ariana's performance though. Still excited to hear both their versions of the songs. And hopefully Ariana's overall character is different.

I saw the Broadway show, watched the OG Wizard of Oz movie and Oz the great and powerful and I love all of them
If you were to judge who is the true guilty one of being truly evil between the Wizard and the Wicked Witch of the West, which testimony or side of the story would you want to belive? The side of the story being told by the point of view of the Wizard as told in the movie OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL, or the side of the story being told under the point of view of The Wicked Witch of the West as told by WICKED?

You know, I actually hated and was scared of the "Oz the great and powerful" version because of the scary things it had, and because and most importantly that ugly witch at the end of the movie which I wish to have memories of erased from my mind forever along with that whole movie itself, and for that movie to never exist, especially for Disney not having that either.
Ooh that last note got me crying! What a voice.
I had constant chills throughout this, and the feeling multiplied with every sung note. This looks absolutely incredible. I'm trying to hold back all the tears for when I finally see it.

This looks great but it’s going to have such a Part Two problem. All these scenes (with the exception of the slightly smoking hat) are from Act 1 of the musical, which means (as we all predicted) they’re ending Part One at Defying Gravity. Which means Part Two is going to be SUCH a let down comparatively, as it is in the musical. It doesn’t have any of the best songs and the plot merely serves to get everything in place for The Wizard of Oz. I really hope they find a way to spice up Part Two somehow, even if that means moving away from the plot of the musical. On a brighter note, this part looks fab and isn’t shying away from the fact that it’s a musical which is a refreshing change!
