My favorite Zhiyun Crane 3S + Ready Rig set up

- I bought a Crane 3S a few months back as an inexpensive alternative for cinema cameras, but have't been very happy with the upright gimbal form factor. Fatigue sets in quickly when running a heavy cinema rig, and I wanted to figure out a way to use my Ready Rig with the Crane 3S. Luckily there's good traditional gimbal rings coming to market like the Digital Foto Magic Ring, that pair well with the Crane 3S. This opens up a lot of opportunity to pair the gimbal with the Ready Rig, and my favorite accessory - the CineMilled Swivel. I hope this helps some Crane 3S users find a solution for those long takes.

Are you still running this set up? I've recently set up a ready rig with a crane 3s and a smallrig ring. However I'm finding theres a fair bit of wobble/flex between the camera/gimbal/ring. I'm thinking it's to do with the design of the gimbal being mounted on the bottom of the ring rather than hung from the top like ronin2/movi. How stable are your running shots? I'm shooting with a BMPCC6K and 40mm Orion and I cant get a stable running/quick walk. Slow movements are fine, but as soon as I pick up the pace, theres to much flex/wobble in the system. Cheers for any tips 🤘
I never had any issues with flex with the add ring, but it was solid aluminum not carbon fiber so that probably has something to do with it. I’ve switched over to the Ronin S2 and the Tilta Advanced ring though, more compact and feature rich system.
Hey love the video - this looks like the smartest gimbal and support setup that I’ve come across. Really close to buying this whole kit. What’s the max and min height that you can comfortably have the camera and get a steady walking shot? Notice you’ve also got a wide lens. Do you think you could get a shot without any foot steps showing up at 35mm and 25fps? 50mm would be ideal
The biggest problem with this set up getting the camera high enough, the highest I can get it is just below eye level. The height of the ring is the main issue. You can use longer lenses no problem though. I’ve actually mostly switched over to the Ronin S2 with the tilta advanced ring, then using the swivel and ready rig with that. The whole set up is much more compact and you can get the gimbal above eye level easily.
@mattdevino you power it with VMount? (Since the handle of the advanced ring is on top, it is in the way of the swivel) Am I right?

Hey mate you don't get vibrations or shake in the footage when you use heavy gear with this ring?
As long as you have a hold on the ring it doesn't vibrate, if put it down on the ground and just let it sit there you'll see some vibrations.
How do you focus with this? Like say If you want to do it while moving?
I have a RR Vega with a movi pro and actually thinking of ‘downgrading’ to something like this!
Jim Elliott I’d rather have the MōVI Pro, but this gimbal is like 1/4 the price (which is why I got this) so you could definitely sell the MōVI and put the money into something else.
Matt Devino apart from being expensive movi pro gets heavy quick when you have to start adding things like the ignite digi plates just to avoid using the horrid batteries

Matt Devino ok, last thing - with the swivel, and the ring, do you find it difficult to get the camera at head height? It looks pretty low in its ‘default’ position
Jim Elliott yeah with this ring it’s a little bit of an issue because the ring is so tall. It wouldn’t be as much of an issue with the movi. I might upgrade to a CineMilled pro ring if they come out with a quick release plate for the Crane 3S, that’d allow me to choose different tube lengths to adjust the size of the ring.
Hey I’m running a very similar rig just different camera, no Vega upgrade and no swivel attachment. Did you ever have a problem with vibrations hitting the camera from the ring as you move? If so did you find a fix?

Do you have the 30lbs or 40lbs version? My fear is if I purchase the 30lbs version, the arms will not extend far enough up to bring my camera to eye level when periodically needed. Thanks in advance!
I have the Pro Arms with the Vega system, so I think that’s the 40lb.
Does Crane 3 have a DC port so you can run a Dtap to V Mount battery to it?
It has a DC port but you need to use their power plus batter pack. V-mount won't work.
I just got this same setup once I seen ur video I was sold. But my ? Is w vega since my upgrade on backorder. I just got proarms w bungees. But how do you get it to level off high. I guess its impossible w non vega? And what about flying crane 3s inverted? With handle bars? Any ideas on that rather than magic arm.
Yeah you need the Vega. Smallrig makes handle bars for the Crane 3S. Or you can use the ring I have and flip the feet around.
@@mattdawgpro I have the smart sling adapter like you too. Be nice if cine milled or someone made an adapter to lock the handle there. I have digital foto bar. Its hefty. Made good. I had my crane 3s vertical and the screw loosened up on bottom. Has that happened to you? Maybe I didn't tighten it enough. Coming from easyrig i loved how u could set height and 4 get about it. W ready rig I can't do that. At least not with GS + pro arms. I hope vega makes a huge difference. Thx 4 ur videos and inputs.
Hi Matt, could you please link to the nato rail parts for your monitor? I have the smallrig nato clamp and I am trying to find a solution to have the nato rail on the gimbal ring so I can easily move the monitor from camera to gimbal ring uniformly. Thank you
Hey! It’s just all smallrig stuff. They make a rod clamp for gimbals that has a bunch of 1/4-20 mounts, and then I just put a small Nato rail on that. Hope it helps!

Not sure what you mean, shims or plates for what?

@@thereeljohnsteele No you'll need some parts from cinemilled, there was a cheeseplate that I bought that allowed me to secure the clamps around the tube, you'll also need the 2 inch shim.
Great rig! Any motor vibration issues with the 3S to start? What's been the heaviest payload you've had on it working? Great footage non the less :)
There can be slight vibration when the gimbal is just sitting on the ground in the ring, but as long as you have it balanced right the vibrations go away away the second you pick it up. I think the heaviest has been around 10-13 pounds, somewhere around there. I never really weigh my camera rig so don't know for sure.

Hey, there’s only one swivel but you can choose different mounting hardware. You just need the 2 inch Delrin Shim, and then you can either buy one of the mounting plates (doesn’t matter which one, I have the universal cheese plate but I don’t think it’s available anymore) or just go to the hardware store and get a set of nuts that match the bolts that go through the clamp to hold it all together.

FRIEND THANKS FOR THE VIDEO. CAN YOU HELP ME ? I USE CRANE 3S together with a BLACKMAGIC 6k camera. I need to make a good balance. The fact is that this camera, unlike all other cameras, has a displaced center of gravity, so it is very difficult for Crane 3s to stabilize this video camera on a gimbal.
Cергей Вернега there’s some good videos on RUclips about how to balance the gimbal. I used to run the pocket 6k on mine and didn’t have issues with balance. Just make sure you don’t have any accessories on the camera that mike it wider/add weight on the sides that will stress the roll motor. One other tip is to auto tune the motors, then manually crank just the roll motor up to 60+ strength (you’ll need the newest firmware). This will eliminate shaking in under sling mode.

Also, by 60 I mean on the Smart Sling handle you can dial in custom motor strengths, set the roll strength to 60 or more, make sure you have the newest firmware. I don't have What's App, sorry.

Hi, no that doesn't come with the swivel, I believe it's called the universal cheese plate. If you look at the swivel on their website it shows a bunch of options for the bottom attachment, some are specific to other gimbals like the movi or Ronin 2.
