Very cool, I liked those trucks since 1996 when a friend of mine bought one. Before then I thought the Little Rangers were the only smaller Ford trucks, never knew the F-100 Ranger ever existed before then. Make sure to rule out the U-joints as the clunking you're hearing before you dive into the rear, much less expensive to fix and more likely to go bad? This would make a great hot rod truck, heck it already has a Ford 9" in it! With todays fuel prices an O/D transmission would pay for itself in no time if you plan to daily drive it. Also since it has a 302 in it already, a 347 stroker kit for the engine would be a nice upgrade. Built the right way would even get better fuel economy with more compression and the right cam choice. I know the 700R4 is a GM trans but that 1st gear they have are oh so fun, I'm sure they make an adapter plate to bolt one to a 302 Ford. This is the first upgrade I would do if it were mine, cool project.
