  • We all battle besetting, habitual sin. The normal experience of the Christian in this fallen world is to battle against the corruption of our flesh. This war will go on until we die or Christ returns. We struggle to process this battle, though. We are often discouraged. And the church hasn't always helped. In this episode, Jon and Justin have a historical, theological, and biblical discussion on the battle against the flesh and the hope of Christ.
Semper Reformanda: Jon and Justin answer some potential objections. They also consider how the grace that justifies is the grace that sanctifies, as well as the Christian's need for the church.

I hate my sin. I read all the NT passages about not sinning and I think, "that's not me," and just sink into depression. I've even wanted to die just so I stop sinning. I think that's a cop out. As I balance Scriptures that command us not to sin with Scriptures addressed to believers that talk about how to respond when we do, I think it's clear we should have a godly attitude to sin and strive not to, but not to give up when we do fail. We should never embrace sin, but always run to God if and when we do.

This was so encouraging and refreshing. We weary pilgrims who hate our sin but still struggle with it need to be reminded of the gospel/grace of Christ. I loved the part about adoption papers. Thank you so much! I would love to see a Theocast podcast take on prayer. I believe there's been a lot of confusing things said regarding prayer and pietistic versions of how to pray but I would love to hear about what true biblical prayer looks like because it's something I struggle with.

This is so timely. I struggle with my salvation constantly and its very exhausting. I hear preaching that if you are not showing the fruit of the spirit then you're deceived and not saved. I believe in what Jesus has done for me and my sins, and agree with God how sinful I am. But I still struggle with patience and anger sometimes. Lately I've been so close to cursing at times out of no where and I don't know why. I haven't been reading my Bible either and I've seen someone say if you don't read or pray every day your not saved. I feel like I'm in a weird season in life right now and when I look at all these things it makes me question my salvation. I feel stuck buy I still love the Lord. I don't want to be one of those in Matthew 7 23, that terrifies me. I need rest but it's so hard.

I'm exactly feeling this way and I'm just now entering a period where I prayed for God to help me learn the word and I told him of my desire and so he showed me many things and still I'd but also shown me false teachers and helps me seek truth to discern between false and true and I'm just learning about lordship and grace doctrines and calvanism vs Armenianism and like you I just want the truth and in my heart I think I know and you are not alone and we will see that this video is truth its supported way more than other theories people come up with you aren't alone we are with you AND GOD IS WITH YOU HE NEVER LEAVES OR FORSSKES YOU AMEN

I believe the very fact that you're concerned about it is reason to rejoice in your salvation...keep listening to good reformed pastors..I pray that you would grasp this message and truly rest in your salvation, where gratitude for his grace would replace your fear ❤ ps. No Christian can boast in anything for salvation, not even praying everyday...which honestly, they most likely have failed there too!

What a breath of fresh air this was. At times I have been so burdened by lack of a “radical change” in my life that I have fallen into depression. I am not where I once was but I do still struggle with some things that were present before salvation and some days I feel like I am the only one like this. I know that isn’t the case but these types of talks are so rarely had and it is a shame. Thank you both for this you guys are awesome.

That whole thing about the "doers of the law" being justified has to be handled in its context. Paul says that and then moves on to demonstrate that no one, really, is truly a doer of the law and hence we must be justified by faith. I've seen people pound the table with that one. Even within myself, I can catch myself pounding the table. We have to keeping coming back to Christ alone. It's absolutely mind boggling. Even after years, the thought of what God did in Christ and the provision of the New Covenant can be totally overwhelming. I guess you could say we are simultaneously growing in our understanding of Amazing Grace and a "wretch like me."

How wonderful this vid was, especially for me and I know for all of the brothers and sisters who heard this encouraging message. May indeed we rest in Christ alone for all things and trust in God for our Justification, sanctification, and our glorification. Thank you brothers and may God bless all.

This battle for perfection is so prevalent (or completely absent)! Even when we hear a great preacher like Paul Washer, yes, there is grace, but there is a huge pile of sanctification, holiness, and piety on the edge of pietism stacked on top of that message.

Lack of assurance and defeat is coming from the pulpit of "great preachers" like Paul Washer. Him and Johnny Mac are all about causing people to despair, without hope of salvation. Always wondering, never having assurance. All they do is point people to themselves. Is it any wonder when looking to oneself for assurance, one never has any?

The Gospel is not our response…to the Gospel. This thought doesn’t lead to antinomianism. Gospel teaches us to deny ungodliness, Titus 2:11-12 Saw Johnny Mac at a conference back in 1982. He wasn’t headlining anything and he looked so angry. He’s a pietistic fundy…

I would argue that the battle between wanting to do what's right but not doing it is not uniquely Christian. Non-christians deal with the same battle, although I agree that they are not regenerated. And yet, the battle is still there. Just think about those struggling with addictions who aren't Christians. Many know that it isn't right and they don't want to struggle with it, and yet they still fall into it. While they don't have a dual nature, the battle between what they see as right and wrong still exist. So it is something that they can relate to.

Since the RCC ran brothels, I'm not sure what that says to the laity about not sinning. It's possible they still do but keeps it hidden. Don't even try to deny this. It's recorded church history.

In the church, you hear a lot about 1 John 3:9 and habitual sin. The issue is how do you define that? what if you get angry with your wife once a year for the rest of your life? Isn't that habitual? What are your thoughts on that verse?

Hey guys could you clarify if Paul is speaking before or after his conversion when he says “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do”. I’ve heard some say that Paul is speaking of himself before he was saved. People who say this will say that people who engage in perpetual sin aren’t repentant.

I see no evidence that Paul was speaking of the past. Charles Spurgeon believed that Paul’s thorn in the flesh was a temptation / sin problem. Read his sermon on the thorn in the flesh.
