There were differences with the HBOs when they started, which is something they needed to resolve with HBO MAX (and did). HBO was the pay cable TV service. HBO GO was the streaming service for the TV service subscribers. HBO NOW was a standalone service for people who wanted to stream HBO and not have to pay for the cable service. Then, HBO MAX combined everything into one.
The name HBO has OVER 30 years of equity and respect, dating back to the "National Cable Boom" of the 1980's. EVERYONE knows the name HBO, even my 90 year old Grandma knows what HBO is and asks to watch it. How on EARTH would you throw away a name with that much equity and value?

And the boneheaded decisions by David Zaslav just keep on coming. From canceling almost finished projects, to removing critically acclaimed animated content off of HBO Max, to getting themselves in lawsuits, to burning bridges with directors, removing Looney Tunes off of HBO Max, keeping problematic actors “cough” Ezra Miller cough” and the list goes on.
I do agree that Zaslav has made some bad decisions, but regarding Ezra Miller, I' don't think it's so much that they're keeping him on board, it's that they know if they announce Ezra isn't the Flash anymore right away they're basically shooting the Flash movie in the foot. Considering how poorly Shazam 2 did, they don't want to do that. I have a feeling about a week after the Flash comes out they'll announce Ezra is moving on to other projects.
Considering Zazlav’s role is to get WB out of its debt, complaint 1 and 2 make sense. Everything else’s after complaint 2 was done before Zazlav came in (lawsuits, directors, LT, and Ezra) where he kind of has to go with the flow of what he was handed from the previous administration

I already knew it was a terrible name, but I went to talk to a friend who works in marketing and she pointed out several technical aspects of why it is terrible. This seems to have just been the decision of someone with power based solely on personal impression.

I also think it's worth noting that changing the colour to blue was a terrible idea, HBO owned purple in streaming, now they're using the same colour as Paramount+, Prime and Disney+, why would you change that?

As a subscriber the renaming is stupid to me. HBO itself is a huge brand and in the game itself as was HBO MAX. Renaming it just MAX is facepalm Stupid.

A lot of cable providers had an option to add HBO, and then a separate option for Showtime+Cinemax, or an option for all 3. But Cinemax was created by HBO, and has been their property (and subsequently Warner's, and WarnerDiscovery's) since the beginning.
I hate it being called max like everyone but I will say I’m glad it wasn’t called max+
I HATE this name with a passion, however, if I have to try to understand it, this is my take. I believe HBO will continue to be a sub brand under the Max banner, just like DC and Loony Tunes etc. I still believe House of the Dragon will be a HBO branded show for example. But the argument against that is Disney+ has Disney content as well as Marvel and Star Wars etc. So they should’ve just called the service HBO+ to make it work just like everything else “it’s HBO plus all of these other brands including Discovery etc etc”.
Also if I’m remembering it correctly, back in the day, HBO Go was specific if the service was through a cable provider etc and HBO Now was the standalone service, and “HBO” didn’t exist anymore, and then HBO Now was replaced by HBO Max. So I don’t believe that all 4 existed together at the same time, but I could be wrong.
Either way, such a stupid decision and I really hope eventually they pull their heads out of their asses and change it ONCE AGAIN to just something like HBO+.
Hbo was still around. That was why there was confusion back then. If I’m correct hbo go came with an hbo subscription and hbo now was just the streaming service. It was all so stupid and confusing. I remember I had an issue for like 2 hours where I tried to login into my hbo now account through the hbo go app and it was asking for my service provider. I’m like “how am I supposed to log in? I don’t have cable. They just screwed the app up” but I was just using the wrong hbo app. But agreed this is probably in the top 5 dumbest business decisions ever made

i think WB did right by dropping the hbo name. the HBO name has always been synonymous with adult oriented and edgy programming. HBO max was confusing in terms of what is max original and what is True HBO original
You know what really drives me crazy about this? I get, the HBO name limited they appeal. But even a child knows that the name should be WARNER something, maybe "Warner Max' to refference the old name. But Zaslav doesn't alloud because it can not be just Warner, what about Discovery? DUDE, THE CENTENARY STUDIO WITH BRAND POWER IN THIS BUSINESS IS WARNER.
And even then, it’s not that hard to come up with a better name that includes both WB and Discovery. Like, I always hated the name HBO Max, I thought it would make way more sense to call it something like “Warner+” or “Warner Bros+” or “WB+” and I understand that maybe it would seem like “Warner Discovery+” would be too long of a name. But Discovery+ literally has a “D” as their logo. Why not name the service WBD+ to keep the name short, and then make it clear what it stands for by combining the WB logo and Discovery’s “D” logo. Even if people don’t recognize Discovery’s logo, they’ll at least recognize WB.
I’m just guessing here… and I also hate the name change, but…
I think the reason they’re removing the “HBO” name is because of its meaning. They’re no longer a premium service in the age of streaming and people don’t pay for channels the same way they used to, thus no longer being the “home box office.” People damn near shit themselves with anger when Disney+ started charging a fee for movies that were simultaneously playing in theaters, so I think WB was wise to avoid doing that, but it came at the expense of revenue.
I hate this theory and I don’t like the name change either. “HBO” has so much prestige to it. They could’ve just made the name an orphaned initialism.
SO many marketing teams have NO IDEA people go to what they KNOW, not something new!!! I work in marketing, design and art, and this always gets so much in my nerves lately.

Cinemax is owned by WB too. It's content is actually already on HBO MAX. I always thought that's where the MAX part of the name came from to begin with.

Hey guys I just read the email about the switch from HBO Max to Max and it also mentions that my HBO MAX account will move to MAX. This to me suggest this is not just a simple rebranding or merging of content with their Discovery library, but also a change of the streaming service platform itself, without having that be the focus. Not sure why. I hope the new platform is not buggy and filled with technical glitches. MAX is a stupid name for the streaming service if the primary draw is HBO content. I wonder how this affects those that have HBO Max as an add on service through their Amazon Prime or Hulu subscriptions. I hope we're not headed for another conflict like HBO and Amazon had when the service first launched.

HBO and Cinemax were bundled together in a ton of cable network and Cinemax was always known as the “cheapo” of the two (because it was). I thought adding the max name to hbo made it sound cheaper and the name just MAX is even worse. What is wrong to just do what everyone else did and add a plus sign. It works. HBO+. Done.

Their reasoning for dropping HBO make some sense. They want the name to represent every age member of a family and all the different brands WarnerBros Discovery owns, not just HBO. So I get not naming it HBO, But I do agree Max is a really stupid name.
