Barrens - Music & Ambience - World of Warcraft

- The Barrens was once a thriving forest under the protection of the night elves and their kind. Several kaldorei settlements dotted the land, and there was no ocean for miles. Then came the Burning Legion and the Great Sundering, which shook ancient Kalimdor to the bedrock. This forested landscape transformed into a scorched plain and is battered now each day by the sun's rays. The Barrens is a sprawling and arid savanna that stretches between the Stonetalon Mountains to the west and Durotar to the east. The grasslands and mesas of Mulgore rise to the southwest, while the wetlands of Dustwallow Marsh lie to the southeast.
The majority of the region consists of vast plains. Mountains to the west hold in heated air, creating the swirling winds that rage across the plains. These windstorms stir up dust devils and tear apart anything larger than the small, tenacious scrub trees. Water is more valuable than gold in the Barrens, and the locations of hidden watering holes are the residents' most closely held secrets. Dry riverbeds and a never-ending spider web of canyons make any journey across the Barrens a dangerous and winding trek. The few brave adventurers willing to scrape out a life on the arid plains inevitably run afoul of centaur warbands or quilboar raiding parties. Despite its often uninviting terrain and hostile inhabitants, the Barrens receive a good deal of interest from Alliance and Horde alike, as well as races native to Kalimdor. Trade routes crisscross the landscape leading to and from more inviting regions, most notably the Gold Road that runs north-to-south through the Barrens and beyond, and rumors suggest that precious minerals and ruins await those with the courage to investigate.
The description above is taken from "Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game" rulebook for the Warcraft tabletop RPG and not only considered non-canon, but also was written for the old version of the zone. Good read though

I got a nice chuckle out of that, you did a two-for-one deal -- gave the barrens music and provided a snippet of Barrens chat from back in the day! As usual, another quality WoW Ambient music video, fantastic for so many different scenarios -- the sound is just crisp and excellent for all uses.
I'm sure the barrens is truly barren now or is it? .. Hmm.
Thank you for the upload!

Started playing WOW at the very start of burning crusade with my dad. We had no idea what we were doing but we started out in the valley of trials, i was a mage and he was a warrior. The year was 2007 I was 13 and we played together all the way through MOP. So many memories and these starting regions stick with me so much more than the others. It was a vast world unexplored and challenging. Now I am a 30 year old man dad has passed, and I can't help but feel bittersweet when hearing this music and seeing the places we adventured. Bless the original developers for this immortal game.
The Burning Crusade launched in 2007.
May your Dad rest in peace. I know the feeling you describe: some sort of lost paradise shared with loved ones who are no more.
"I'll see you tomorrow bro! We'll finish the last quests before we move to Ashenvale".

So true 😭🥹
Ouch ♥
6:13 The best part when playing Horde!
Im getting goosebumps!
Right!
I played as an ally and this is my all time favorite music part in the whole game....
And 33:40
ALRIGHT! E MINOR, YAY!
And now I want to play wow again........
We all do!
but now, wow is boring ^^

This is exactly the one I've been hoping for. Many, many good memories with friends; all n00bs who were just discovering WoW for the first time with me. Barrens was a hell of a classroom.
"Why do those raptors have a dragon around their portraits?"
*dies*
for me was silverpine forest and being terrified of walking away from the path cause of the Sons of Arugal, lots of dead corpses...
Re-running as a Shaman Tauren in the Barrens as we speak ^_^
I was such a noob, once i got killed by en elite undead npc in silverpine forest and i thought it was alliance.........and i was "WTF dude"!!!!
Yup - I had someone have to explain what thh "AFK" above a toons head meant.. so good.
@@pt4m did the same thing in the Barrens with those 3 Nelf NPCs that roam around. I was in chat all "THERES 3 ALLIANCE HERE JUST WALKING COME HELP"
That little part that begins at 6:15 and sounds like a clarinet or even an oboe always gets me nostalgic. Thanks so much! I grew up (in WoW) living in the Barrens and Ashenvale. Wonderful memories.
TOTALLY
Has this part got any name?
god damn I loved this part. I think it plays in desolace or Badlands too.
Best part i always max my volume if this part comes when iam questing
That bit is as mythic to me as the Zelda theme.
It's interesting how a piece of music can revive so many feelings and memories
That is the definition of a complex.
music can make a 90+ year old lady with alzheimers remember her dance from old days as a young ballerina..why i'm taking this example? there's an actual video about that it's impressive she even remembers the choreography and does it while listening to the piece
😢
cause we grinded to this music for hours and hours its embedded with the memory
Listening to this nowadays feels like stretching to some past life that doesn't exist anymore. I don't get such nostalgy even from my childhood memories. The memories from playing vanilla-tbc-wotlk is now an essential part of my soul.
Same it makes me feel so sad for some reason. Strong feelings of nostalgia
Miss the pre-Cata Barrens. Good old times.
Cata was the tip of the "fuck you" sword that blizzard thrust up our arseholes...
Oh man, just wandering around the Barrens exploring mindlessly with this music in the background was one of the best parts of the game.
I never play Cata since i retired at middle of Wotlk. I will keep my memories about crossroad and camp taraujo......just like that.
Cata barrens is awesome....just as good as the old one.Infact the 1-60 update was pretty well done.
Come on back, the game is more exciting than ever with Power Leveling and the exciting new expansions...oh wait, I bet you're bosses and wives would HATE that. Well I guess your free time is not you're own. I still enjoy the game. The only annoying thing about it is the mobs are no longer realistically strong, now they're "one swipe and dead" but you can still do Mount Raids where you can tank the raids by yourself and get a nice, rare mount as a reward.
Has anyone gone to the barrens alone at night with headphones on and max ambience, it’s the most peaceful thing you can experience, also make sure it’s dark in your room
It was made for just that purpose. The real time GPT version will be in every holo room.
I used to, a lot!
yes usually around 4am i woke up b4 school and played until then night turned into day amazing memories
Farewell old friend... The game which made you feel you truly stepped and wondered in a world of fantasy and true immersion.
May the winds be at your back...
May our paths cross again...
@1Scuter Think I might do that myself actually
@@Foril89 WoW Classic is releasing this summer!
Gun, it wont be the same... Wow Vanilla won't be what it used to be, people became better and people can use the internet now, i miss those good ol' times

And always remember...
*PATIENCE DISCIPLINE*
Honest truth old wow broke my brain permanently. Any time Im feeling miserable which is a lot these days Im just constantly overwhelmed with nostalgia for those times and my old guildmates. Sad to say but it was the most fun Ive ever had in life period, and never being able to match or return to it is killing me. Playing on a private server is ok but not that same experience, or first time, or community, or those people you knew. It really was more than the sum of its parts.
I'm guessing your waiting the classic now :D
James Cox I could not say it better...it was an alternate world that was much better than current reality...hope I can get some of the feeling back with WOW retail vanilla...but I know it will not ever be exactly the same.
Watch overlord lol main character feels the same
man i feel you,i'm the same right now
So true. I totally didn't give a shit back then. Home straight from school; hit that PC power button. Could not fucking wait to get home. It sucked out a huge chunk of my life, and I don't even play video games any more, i get too existential, but when I think back on those times, it's hard to think of when I enjoyed myself more than, or even as much as those times. Original 40 man raids on MC and BWL... 40 vs 40 Alterac Valley with one game that went over 2 days with Alliance never winning! Befriending people from interstate, and even over seas, catching up over teamspeak every night like you're mates from school after first meeting up for the first time for a Mara run at the princess. I get annoyed and feel the pain of wanting that feeling again of what I once had, but then I appreciate that I have those awesome memories.
I still remember leaving Mulgore the first time. The music and change of environment really gave you a feeling of place. Getting to Crossroads felt like traveling, and getting to Ratchet felt like being on the edge of space.
I remember it as well ! I was so confused, met a guy on a Kodo at the frontier of mulgore and barrens. I remember he stopped to explain I still had to level up in Mulgore and /point the direction I should go to.
Different times man...
6:14 is SO ICONIC. I remember late summer nights fishing deviates from the pond by Wailing Caverns while the chat flooded with a never-ending tsunami of Chuck Norris jokes. Interesting times... What a great soundtrack, the composers could not have done a better job
deviates fishing and that music....
Nostalgia strikes again
do you regret to had lived this moment now or not ?
Actual most nostalgic zone after listening to all the ambiance zones....the vast size of it and barrens chat in the background, chill af.
This feels like home. I'm safe here.

Clever girl
As someone previously commented, 14:11 gets me seriously thinking of what the Orcs, Trolls, and Tauren of the Horde went through in trying to make a life for themselves. That part of Barrens music makes me think of all the struggles, loss, and perseverance all members of the Horde go through in trying to survive through Kalimdor. At the same time, uniting under one banner to make a home for themselves in such perilous lands.. such hardships, brings some water to the eyes.
I think that clip specifically sounds sad, maybe mournful in a way? Yet still peaceful and cautiously inviting. Like lost memories...
I will never forget hearing that string music that starts at 9:37 while on a flight path over the Barrens... what an amazing moment. it's wild to think a 15-year-old game has impacted us all so much!
It’s art nothing more
@@Anudorini-Talah That's exactly what art should do.
6:15 is one of the best music pieces in the game.
Barrens without Barrens Chat is not the same...
Chuck Norris dosen't sleep. He waits.
He waits for every player that comes by crossroads. From Vanilla to Battle of Azeroth.
Chuck Norris does his grocery shopping at Home Depot.
Where is Mankrik’s wife?
Chuck Norris IS the big bang
14:16 to 15:00 the reason I'm here!
Same, best part..
I don't play WoW anymore, but its music has never stopped being part of my life.
same. whenever i play a solo fantasy game, i play the WoW music in the background. Also great for pen and paper sessions.
The Barrens is a magical place. The very ending starting at 59:13 gave me goosebumps. So vivid.
I specifically left out those two pieces until the very end. Glad someone noticed.
Well done, Everness. I noticed your efforts there! I appreciate all of these, just like you do. I rolled in Vanilla and have been playing ever since. Lots of good content over the years, but Vanilla will always be most special.
Actually to be honest - I enjoy it more when these "goosebump" tracks appear twice or three times during these 1 hour music videos. Like the Dun Morogh video you made - the piano piece which gives me goosebump is included twice I think. Around the 14th and 48th minute marks.
Interesting... Noted!
Goodness, listening to this is something almost impossible to put into words, that sounds so dramatic and cliché, but damn, the nostalgia overload of memories and laughter and exploration that this brings back is unbelievable, this and many other moments in that game will forever be carved into one of the best times of my life, im sure many others on here feel the same. WoW was just a video game at the end of the day, but gosh did it feel like more than that most of the time.
I may end up having to put your name in the acknowledgements of my PhD dissertation. I've had these videos going almost non-stop the past 1½ year! Perfect for both reading and writing. The only problem is they make you want to go home and play. :) Thank you for your service, sir!
I used it for my masters thesis
Yup, they got me a B.A. at Portland State. Thanks.
10:29 My favorite, when I played. Somehow the music seemed meaningful while I was wasting away my hours with the terrain moving past me while I was collecting the next quest item.
I know for a lot of people their memories around the Barrens are from classic but cata barrens are really nostalgic for me. Just running around with that caravan kodo, fighting the quillboars, doing all the different quests around the weird oases while trying to avoid all the centaurs... good times.
Bruh, this video is the essence of life!
Cried to these videos, I miss the good times ive had with this game and the people I met in azeroth.. Really miss them. Met my wife in wow, xroads. Played over 11 years.. Have to raise a hat, thats a damn long time. Great videos! Ty for this feeling :,)
You still play?
So you couldn't find Mankirk's wife but you found your own? Awesome!
I totally feel you man...absolutely.
I remember coming to the Barrens with a rogue and keeping it in stealth to listen to music like that in 2007. God, what a time. 😓
I tell ya, I put this on at night when I try to sleep and I start dreaming I’m back in the barrens leveling an orc, charging at the quilboars and slaying the plainstriders. Oh the good old days!
Something very calming and simple about this music. Puts me completely back to running home after school to play. Get ganked in the barrens, move up maybe 1 bar of experience, then logout to do homework.
When it is Winter here in Germany... i must warm up my Soul in the Barrens.
This makes me wanna cry if I consider what WOW has become. This music is drilled into my brain from a very fond childhood. Will miss you WOW, RIP old friend.
Wow, I miss my teenager days when degrading at school because of this game. Good old times.
The only thing I ever did in world of Warcraft was running around exploring the world, trying to find rare items and pets, hiding from the enemies as a rogue, going on spying missions and having amazing fun adventures while my friends were sitting and screaming at me in Ventrilo that I have to level up so I can play the game properly... good times
Is anybody here savoring Classic? Now that it's out, I feel like my soul has been revitalized. I can finally know comfort and peace again. My heart is so warmed by the Classic experience. 💖
I started with wotlk, but on a potato. Never got far, then Cataclysm dropped and the potato couldn't handle it. Years went by. Met a guy at work last year who told me about the rebirth of WoW Classic, and I'm so happy to get to experience it again on a good computer! I can't believe the world building, so amazing!
@@seekingfinding6204 How are you my friend? After all this time...
When I traveled with my friend in the south of Albania, we were walking across the country, traveling through hills, finding small towns and villages along our aimless route. The weather was warm and the walk not to difficult, it was very similar to my experience of the Barrens in WoW (and visually too). We were noobs, knowing nothing of the world around, we didn't care much about quests that our travel book gave us. We just walked around. It was calm.
6:15 is where it really hits... Damn.
An hour of Barrens music? Thats exactly how long it took me to get anywhere!
@9:35 "The land will weep 1" such a somber and beautiful piece. God. DAMN. That's good nostalgia.
Troll voice: "Not enough Energy!!"
"I don't have enough Energy.."
"Not enough Energy!!"
"I don't have enough Energy.."
"Too Fah awayeh"
I remember running between the Oasis spots in barrens fishing for Deviate Fish to sell so people could cook up deviate delights. Think there used to be a rare that would spawn in one of the little lakes in front of WC that dropped a 1h axe. Then when alliance showed up to fish at these lakes nearly shit myself cause of the skull icon next to their name. /Wave usually worked though! As long as you gave him those fishing nodes.
Here's to hoping WoW classic can give me at least half the fun I had back when I was 8-9 wandering around being dumb back in Vanilla.
AH CAHN CAREE DAT!
The feeling when you entered The Barrens as an Alliance player and you see it on red font "Horde Territory" those feelings, man. I wish I could experience that all over again. Shortly after I re-rolled horde XD
6:15, 37:55 and 42:25 Thats old good memories.
I left my heart in the Barrens. And my sanity in Barrens general chat.
Life would be so much better if it had this type of music playing in the background :
My oldest memory happened in the barrens, I was playing my first ever char, an orc warrior named "Kagorotoos" and i believe it took me like 6+ months to hit level 20 LMAO (I think it was during BC but idk, I was around 7 or something and im 19 now...) my professions were like mining and leatherworking but luckily i met a druid who for some reason had blacksmithing and we made each other gear :) It was such a good experience and i'll always be happy my grandpa introduced me to this game. Its such a shame it turned out badly, i wish i could relive those same moments again :(
Summer 2019 cannot come quick enough. I'll see you at the Stolen Silver.
Nearly here brother

And just like that it ended. Taken for granted there will always be another summer but none like before
Where does time go..
I played this early lich king days, i loved it. It was a world of its own, the memories are just so pure. I feel sad and happy at the same time hearing this.
Comming back from school just to play this all weekend was the best feeling and childhood memory i had.
Things where not always peacefull where i grew up but this helped me through it big time.
For the horde!!!! I will never forget feeling that I got from playing wow inside gaming room in my town with other friends nearby... We would go swimming in the sea after few hours of wow, and some of us would yell for the horde on the beach while jumping off cliffs haha really great times, I am so grateful that I was one of the kids that parents could afford playing every day in gaming room for few hours...

Everytime somebody says ''Vanilla'' I think of this song, I remember running in Mulgore with my Tauren Warrior and thinking about reaching high levels in the game, I was only 6-7 years old... I am about to tear up, lol....
That is indeed the most iconic music theme for these low lvl horde parts.... great memories!

renewing my subscription after my exams, havent played since MoP. Man i just want to level a character, read all the quests, not have to rush anything and just absorb the atmosphere of my favorite zones, which Barrens is definitely one of.
The great thing about wow is that you know you had a great day when you see the sun go up and down but in the game lmao.
Joke aside, make quest in the night in the barrens when everyone is asleep was something. And when you meet somebody at 3am he was your bff
I love your videos because of how wonderfully immersive and vibrant WoW was for me the many years I played it. Sitting here and listening and idly watching the different scenes is like returning to a place I've not seen for a long time!

Thanks a lot for these videos! They're really great for working/studying or just reminiscing about the good old days :) The ambience sounds add a lot as well, great idea to keep those alongside the music.
Thank you! Not just keep, but extract and edit for hours and hours! :D
Haha yea I imagine it's quite a lot of work. Thanks again for doing it, the results are lovely :)
It's kinda fucked up that I have so many good memories from my teenage years from a god damn video game but I'd be lying if I said I didn't. So many late nights and so many skipped high school classes for this game. Now I'm a fucking 30 year-old dude who hasn't touched a video game in ten years. College happened, career happened, family happened. This was the biggest nostalgia trip I've had in my whole life. Just made me realize how quickly the years go by and how I ought to enjoy my short time on this earth much more than I do. Thanks man!
Also, THE BARRENS IS UNDER ATTACK!
So glad to hear others get goose bumps listening to this such wonderful memories I will never forget the experience and have yet to capture it in any other game
